| Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary BELIEVE AND BE HAPPY “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” – Luke 1:45 As we ended our one-to-one meeting that day in September, my unit manager, Glenn, shared with me Haggai 2:18-19, “Today is the 24thday of the ninth month… See what is going to happen from now on. Although there is no grain left, and the grapevines, fig trees, pomegranates and olive trees have not yet produced, yet from now on I will bless you.” I was grateful Glenn took time to share this promise with me. I was then struggling in my new career as a financial consultant. My earnings came in trickles but surprisingly tided me over. He said, “I can’t wait for September 24. Waiting for the Lord to fulfill his promises to us is really exciting!” Glenn truly believed the Lord’s promise to bless us. In the months that followed, God faithfully kept His promise. He enabled my team mate Marla to close a deal that helped our unit reach its quota. I received the “Rookie of the Month” award. Our other team mates Jun-jun and Joel also received awards for their achievements. On top of these, all of us in the unit won raffle prizes during our Christmas party. As Glenn had come to believe, from that 24th day in September onwards, the Lord blessed the work of our hands. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@ yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Have you heard the message the Lord has been telling you lately? Does His message bring you joy? May we always remember, Lord, that we find our greatest joy in the fulfilment of Your promises to us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Mary is the model disciple of Jesus. We can look to her to see how we are to follow Christ. Just as Mary brought Christ into the world when she gave birth to Him, so we have to bring Christ to the world through our faith. We have to let Christ live within us so that others will come to know Him as they see Him in us. Who in your world needs to know Jesus? Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab 19 God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. 12: 1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems. 4 Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. 6 The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed One.” P S A L M Psalm 45:10, 11, 12, 16 R: The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. 9 [10] The queen takes her place at your right hand in gold of Ophir. (R) 10 [11] Hear, O daughter, and see; turn your ear, forget your people and your father’s house. (R) 11 [12] So shall the king desire your beauty; for he is your lord. (R) 15 [16] They are borne in with gladness and joy; they enter the palace of the king. (R) 2nd READING The doctrine of the Assumption teaches us that just as Christ was raised from the dead and now sits at the right hand of the Father, so, too, Mary is raised from death and experiences the fullness of heaven because of the death and resurrection of her Son. The Assumption prefigures our destiny also. We look to Mary and discover that we shall follow in her footsteps. Because of Jesus, we, too, shall at the last day be raised from death and experience the fullness of heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:20-27 20 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being. 22 For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, 23 but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; 24 then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death, 27 for “he subjected everything under his feet.” G O S P E L Mary’s Magnificat is also our song. We rejoice in what the Lord has done for Mary in choosing her to be the Mother of God. We also rejoice because of our trust in God’s promise that we, too, will be with Him one day and experience with Mary the joy of eternal life. Luke 1:39-56 39 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” 46 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; 47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior. 48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. 49 The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. 51 He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. 52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. 53 The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, 55 according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” 56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. my reflections t h i n k : Who in your world needs to see Jesus? _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Job 1-5 SABBATH PAUSE My weekly time with God THANK YOU LIST Things to be grateful for from the past week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NEEDS Things to ask God for in the coming week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ HIDDEN TREASURE Most important word God told me this week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | HOLY IS HIS NAME The feast we celebrate today has its origins in the promulgation by Pope Pius XII. In his encyclical Munificentissimus Deus, he teaches that Mary at the end of her earthly life “was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory…” The Assumption, otherwise known as the Dormition, is not to be mixed up with the Ascension. Mary was taken up, assumed into heaven with the assistance of heavenly beings. Jesus ascended into heaven, without any assistance. By His own power, He was exalted to the right hand of the Father. Mary, her body and soul now in heaven, graciously intercedes for us. For where she is, we hope to follow. Her role as Queen is most powerful in effecting grace and assistance for our journey towards heaven. As with any queenly figure, whose intercession and authority before the King are well noticed, how much more the favors granted us by the intercession from the Queen of heaven. Mary stands before Jesus, interceding for us. One of the popular pious acts in the Philippines is the floral offering to Mama Mary. Flowers, fruits and donations for the poor are ways of showing our affection for our Mother who would want us to show this devotion to others less fortunate than us. The scene in the Gospel reminds us of the great act of charity Mary showed her relative, Elizabeth. Having been filled with the Spirit and given such a wonderful gift, she shows love and devotion to one in need of assistance. She glorifies the name of God in her love and service to Elizabeth. Mary, in untiring love and service, remains with her relative for three months. No doubt, she was there to celebrate the birth of Elizabeth’s child, John. Mary’s life of love and service is a great model for us to imitate. She, who is in most need of rest also, looks beyond herself and is engaged in a wonderful charitable act. For this her reward is great. Not only does she give birth to the Savior; she is assumed in heavenly glory at the end of her life. A just reward for a life spent in love of neighbor and service to God. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: What act of charity can we do today in honor of Mary? Mary, with your heart of gratitude and praise, may I spread the good news of God’s love now and always. Amen. St. Alipius, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Watch Bo inspire you in Preacher in Blue Jeans
