| TO BELIEVE IS TO SEE Many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. – John 2:23 Red spots began to appear on my face and arms. I had the measles. I was on field audit then so I called up my boss’s secretary to inform her that I would go on leave. One of the auditors who just came from our office told me that my boss had already received word about my leave but doubted if I was really sick. I was fuming mad inside. I was tempted to go to our office and show myself to my boss to prove him wrong. But my co-auditors advised me to go home immediately so as not to spread the disease. While I was still on leave, my dad bumped into my boss inside an elevator. My boss asked him how I was. When my dad told him that I had measles, he said, “So it’s true that she’s really sick.” In today’s Gospel, when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs He did and they believed in His name. But Jesus says blessed are those who believe without seeing. We have all the proof we need in the Scriptures and the testimony of believers. But for those who refuse to believe, no amount of signs can change their beliefs — even if Jesus Himself would show up. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com) 11 REFLECTION: Faith goes beyond the visible. If you are able to see it then it’s not faith anymore. Believing is seeing. Increase my faith, Lord. Help my unbelief. St. John Ogilvie, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Ten Commandments outline some of the basics of the Natural Law. It is the Natural Law that describes what it means to be a human person and as such is not open to debate. If a law pertains to the meaning of humanity then it ought to be protected in the civil code of a society. Abortion is killing an innocent unborn human person. It ought to be against the law in order to protect innocent human life. The Church has always taken this position, and rightly so. Exodus 20:1-17 1 In those days, God delivered all these commandments: 2 “I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. 3 You shall not have other Gods besides me. 4 You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; 5 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; 6 but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain. For the Lord will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. 9 Six days you may labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. 11 In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you. 13 “You shall not kill. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him.” P S A L M Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11 R: Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. 7 [8] The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true, all of them just. (R) 10 [11] They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. (R) 2ND READING People often complain that God does not deliver answers to questions as straightforward as though we have them in memo or letter form. However, God has given each of us a mind so that we can learn and discover the truth, not just to expect everything to be easy. If we do what we can, we can be sure that God will do the rest. Let us commit ourselves to give God our best and nothing less. 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 22 Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. GOSPEL Jesus is speaking of the House of God or the Kingdom of God. His sentiment is one that we do well to share. It is also something we have to reflect on to discover how we can contribute to the cause of the Kingdom of God. Let us not cease striving to do the best we can at whatever we have to do. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life. John 2:13-25 13 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. 15 He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, 16 and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” 17 His disciples recalled the words of scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. 23 While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. 24 But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, 25 and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well. LIST think: Let us commit ourselves to give God our best and nothing less. Jo T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Revelations 15-18 hn 19-21 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Is Anger a Sin? Many people accuse themselves of having a hot temper when they go to confession. In some religions and cultures, it is just impossible to express anger. One has to control his temper. In my 15 years in Japan, I have often admired Japanese people who still smiled and bowed politely even when they were boiling inside. Is being angry a sin? Are Japanese, Buddhists and disciples of Confucius more saintly than most of the disciples of Jesus? St. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “If you are angry, let it be without sin” (4:26). So, there must be anger that is not sinful. And that brings us to Jesus in today’s Gospel. He was obviously very angry when He made a whip, drove sheep and cattle out of the Temple, and knocked over the tables of the money changers. If that was not anger, I don’t know what anger is. Now I ask you: Did Jesus sin? Of course not, you answer, because from your catechism you know that Jesus was sinless. So, He must have done what St. Paul advises — being angry without sinning. But how? First of all, Jesus did not hurt anybody. He used His whip only to drive the animals out of God’s House without harming a fellow human being. Then, His anger arose not because of selfish reasons but because of the sacrilege that was done to the Temple of God. Let’s face it — anger is a fact of life. Anger is a common human emotion. We all feel it. And we feel it more often than we like to admit. Our world is filled with violence, hatred, war and aggression — and we easily react with anger. That is not sin. But we also feel hurt or irritated when someone or something obstructs our needs and we easily get angry when we don’t get what we want or when somebody insults us. Anger tells you that you are hurt and you don’t want to be hurt. Anger refers to the desire to “get even” with the cause of the hurt. And that would be sinful. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD REFLECTION QUESTION: Do you easily get angry? What could be at the root of your anger? Lord, thank You for making me aware that there are two kinds of anger. Help me to follow always Your example and be only angry at what is evil in the world. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
