| Preventing Soul Decay “Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you.” – John 5:14 “Smile! Say Cheese!” Years ago, having my picture taken used to be awkward for me. I liked seeing myself in photos but I just couldn’t get myself to smile. I was too insecure to show my teeth because I had ugly cavities. Dentists were not one of my childhood favorites, but I started seeing them as soon as I realized that I could have a great smile if only my teeth were fixed. Now that I have better-looking teeth, I smile every chance I get. I also make sure to visit the dentist regularly so I won’t get any more cavities. Just like a cavity, sin starts out small. It grows larger and eventually hurts our soul if we keep on doing things we shouldn’t be doing. The same way that brushing, flossing and regular dental visits help destroy the bacteria that attack our teeth, receiving the sacraments, going to confession and staying close to Jesus cleanses the sins that eat away our heart and soul. Go and pay Christ a visit today, give Him your sweetest smile and He will surely be pleased. Jane Gonzales-Rauch (mgr516@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Is something bothering you lately? You may be due for a soul checkup. Go and see the greatest Healer before it’s too late. Dear Lord, thank You for healing me each day. May I always keep my heart and soul healthy as I wait for the day to see You in glory. St. Salvator of Horta, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The river flowing from the Temple is the River of Life. Water is essential for the gift of life. There are many who say that the next world war will be fought over water rights. Israel is a land that knows how important water is. Perhaps we can reflect on the nature of the Gospel message as essential to a healthy spiritual life as water is to our physical well-being. Let us remember to drink deeply from the wells of salvation. Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12 1 The angel brought me, Ezekiel, back to the entrance of the temple of the Lord, and I saw water flowing out from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the facade of the temple was toward the east; the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He led me outside by the north gate, and around to the outer gate facing the east, where I saw water trickling from the southern side. 3 Then when he had walked off to the east with a measuring cord in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and had me wade through the water, which was ankle-deep. 4 He measured off another thousand and once more had me wade through the water, which was now knee-deep. Again he measured off a thousand and had me wade; the water was up to my waist. 5 Once more he measured off a thousand, but there was now a river through which I could not wade; for the water had risen so high it had become a river that could not be crossed except by swimming. 6 He asked me, “Have you seen this, son of man?” Then he brought me to the bank of the river, where he had me sit. 7 Along the bank of the river I saw very many trees on both sides. 8 He said to me, “This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah, and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh. 9 Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. 12 Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.” 2nd READING Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9 R: The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob. 1 [2] God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. 2 [3] Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea; (R) 4 [5] There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High. 5 [6] God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed; God will help it at the break of dawn. (R) 7 [8] The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob. 8 [9] Come! behold the deeds of the Lord, the astounding things he has wrought on earth. (R) GOSPEL There are very few accounts of miracles in John’s Gospel, but today we have one of them. He heals a paralyzed man on the Sabbath. Jesus has obviously made a decision that the health of a person is far more important than a simple law. It is not for us to go around breaking laws, even if they may only be religious ones. Laws are meant to protect the rights and dignity of persons. Let us pray that our legislators are faithful to this end. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION A clean heart create for me, O God; give me back the joy of your salvation. John 5:1-16 1 After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep [Gate] a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes. 3 In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled. [4] 4 5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” 9 Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked. Now that day was a sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who was cured, “It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” 11 He answered them, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who told you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” 13 The man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there. 14 After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him, “Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well. 16 Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath. think: Laws are meant to protect the rights and dignity of persons. Let us pray that our legislators are faithful to this end. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Genesis 22-24 ohn 19-21 GOSPEL PSALM TODAY’S BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The Unseen Paralysis All of Jesus’ miracles usually have the same pattern: after the physical healing and the cure, Jesus bids the healed person to go and sin no more. In today’s Gospel, Jesus added a different twist. After the healing of the man who had been paralyzed for 38 years, Jesus said to him, “Do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse may happen to you” (v.15). Jesus’ statement merely brings out the point that sin is a worse kind of ailment than physical sickness. For indeed, physical illness could cause a physical paralysis. Sin, on the contrary, causes a spiritual paralysis which could very well lead to eternal death of the soul. This is the “something worse” that Jesus was referring to in His encounter with the paralytic. Jesus today gives us a very practical reminder. One serious sin, especially if it remains unrepented, is more serious than any physical illness. The latter could only cause us temporal discomfort; the former, our salvation. Which would you choose? Once there was a man with three wives. Wife #1 was very loyal and stayed with him through good times and bad. But he did not love her. He ignored her so much she became famished, sickly and ugly. Wife #2, he loved much more, giving her the best food, clothes, comfort and pleasure. Wife #3, he also loved very much. She was his pride and he always presented her to his friends. He was very protective of her. When he was about to die, he asked Wives 2 and 3 to go with him. They said, “No way!” But Wife #1 volunteered, “I will go with you!” We all have three “spouses” — Wife #1 is our soul. Wife #2 is our body. Wife #3 is our possessions. Let us love, nourish and take care of Wife #1. It is she who stays with us until eternity. Fr. Joel Jason REFLECTION QUESTION: How well are you taking care of your soul compared to your body and possessions? Lord Jesus, grant healing to my soul. Cleanse me of my unrepented sins and lead me back to You. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
