| YOU ALWAYS RECEIVE MORE THAN WHAT YOU GIVE “Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands — all that you can hold.” – Luke 6:38 Our prayer group was doing an outreach project in a public hospital in Rizal. Since it was December, we decided to visit the pediatric ward. In each room, we sang Christmas carols, talked to the sick children, chatted with their parents, gave them simple gifts and prayed over them. I felt the happiness of those we visited. But I was still looking for the scene that would make our outreach extra special. On our way out, the facilitator told us that we missed one room. As we entered the room, a three-year-old patient welcomed us with a smile. I approached his bed and he showed me a toothless grin followed by a contagious giggle. His name was Dexter. When I gave him the gift, he said thank you and even rendered us a song. He was sick but he was a very happy child. I even heard him laugh as we were leaving the room. Dexter made our outreach special. We gave him a gift, sang to him and prayed over him. But the joy he gave us that day outdid all the things we presented. Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com) 5 REFLECTION: God loves a cheerful giver. Do something good to a stranger today. Lord, let me be an instrument of Your love and joy today. St. John Joseph of the Cross, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Daniel recognizes that Israel has failed in its duty to listen to God’s Word and follow it. The same could be said of any and every nation today. Where does that leave us? It leaves us precisely in the place where we need to decide whether or not we follow the example of the world and go our own way, or make a stand and do the right thing by aligning our thoughts and actions with the truth of the Gospel. Daniel 9:4-10 4 “Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and observe your commandments! 5 We have sinned, been wicked and done evil; we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws. 6 We have not obeyed your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land. 7 Justice, O Lord, is on your side; we are shamefaced even to this day: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far, in all the countries to which you have scattered them because of their treachery toward you. 8 O Lord, we are shamefaced, like our kings, our princes, and our fathers, for having sinned against you. 9 But yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness! Yet we rebelled against you 10 and paid no heed to your command, O Lord, our God, to live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.” P S A L M Psalm 79:8, 9, 11, 13 R: Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins. 8 Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low. (R) 9 Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name; deliver us and pardon our sins for your name’s sake. (R) 11 Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you; with your great power free those doomed to death. 13 Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; through all generations we will declare your praise. (R) GOSPEL Holiness is important for the Gospel. Ultimately, people will be inspired by lived examples of holiness because this is precisely what people are looking for, even if it takes them longer to realize this. The Church today needs to go back to the basics. We need to go back to the call of holiness and allow it to take root in our lives, or we will hopelessly get lost in the world. This is exactly how the world works, obscuring the truth in the midst of the chaos of nothing! GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life. Luke 6:36-38 36 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. 38 Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” think: We need to decide whether or not we follow the example of the world and go our own way, or make a stand and do the right thing by aligning our thoughts and actions with the truth of the Gospel. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 John 1-5 G 2nd READING GOSPEL PSALM TODAY’S BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | CHARITY NEVER ENDS A story goes that heaven and hell are not really that different. They have almost the same features: abundance of food, drinks, excellent music, perfect accommodations, etc. But in hell all souls possess elongated and stiff arms. The souls suffer from extreme hunger because they can’t bend their hands to feed themselves. But in heaven, they are able to savor the good food because they feed each other instead of themselves. The Gospel today gives us specific instructions on what we must do and not do to our neighbor. This is very appropriate during the season of Lent because these are times when we are encouraged to look at ourselves and how we relate with others and God. Jesus enumerated the common pitfalls we commit and the good things we can do. The contrary would be the work of the devil. Lent basically asks us to intensify on three things; prayer, sacrifice and charity. To some, prayer is the hardest to do. Others would find difficulty in sacrifice. Still others are very much wanting on charity. Charity does not always mean giving material things. If that is so, the poor would rarely and barely meet this requirement. But charity includes everything that comes from love. It includes being merciful and forgiving. Other than material things, it can also be time, effort, or thought. What is important is that the act offers care for the other. Pondo ng Pinoy exemplifies this. It aims the transformation of a person in order to acquire the virtue of charity. By constantly doing small, good acts, it hopes to create the habit and eventually imbibe it as part of the person’s nature. The Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II) further states, “No one is so poor as to have nothing to give, and no one is so rich as to have nothing to receive.” Charity is for everyone to exercise and to benefit from. We can see the wisdom and plan of God — to make a world full of people practicing charity. Fr. Benny Tuazon REFLECTION QUESTION: Are you fulfilling the Lenten call for deeper prayer, sacrifice and charity? Jesus, by Your life You showed us how to pray, how to render sacrifice for love, and how to give generously. I pray for the grace to imitate Your example. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
