| TOOTHBRUSHINg “If God whom we serve is able to save us… then He will. But even if He doesn’t, your Majesty may be sure that we will not worship your god.” – Daniel 3:17,18 I brush my teeth every day. It’s a ritual I do every time after I eat. You know the drill: I put toothpaste on my toothbrush, brush my teeth, then gargle with water. I do this to keep my teeth strong and healthy and to fight cavities. But even with regular brushing, I still end up with a cavity now and then. Is this proof that brushing doesn’t work and that I should just give it up altogether? Of course not! Sometimes we follow this unsound logic when it comes to believing in God. We ask Him for something we want and when He doesn’t grant it or He gives us something else, we take it as a license to stop believing in Him. The Lord has a reason for everything. We may not understand the way He does things, but our all-knowing God knows what is best for us and what we really need at the moment. So even if He does not send us the answers we want, let’s not turn our back on Him. Instead, let’s be excited about how wonderful He will turn our situations for us. Ma. Luisa A. De la Cruz (theessence_byluisa@yahoo.com) 28 REFLECTION: Do difficult situations in your life shake your faith in God? (Close your eyes and pray this slowly, repeating it several times.) Dearest God, I believe in You. St. Hesychius of Jerusalem, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING These three men made a stand. They are men of faith and are not willing to deny it. It is an amazing reality to reflect on — people willing to give their lives for their beliefs. It is this sort of commitment that drove the martyrs of the Early Church. Their blood became the foundations upon which the Church was built. Are we willing to follow their example? Are we going to lay down our lives in the service of the Kingdom of God? Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95 14 King Nebuchadnezzar said: “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my God, or worship the golden statue that I set up? 15 Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments; otherwise, you shall be instantly cast into the white-hot furnace; and who is the God that can deliver you out of my hands?” 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, “There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us! 18 But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your God or worship the golden statue that you set up.” 19 Nebuchadnezzar’s face became livid with utter rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times more than usual 20 and had some of the strongest men in his army bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and cast them into the white-hot furnace. 24 [91] King Nebuchadnezzar rose in haste and asked his nobles, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” “Assuredly, O king,” they answered. 25 [92] “But,” he replied, “I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a Son of God.” 28 [95] Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants that trusted in him; they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any God except their own God.” P S A L M Daniel 3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56 R: Glory and praise forever! [Dan 3:52] “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever; and blessed is your holy and glorious name, praiseworthy and exalted above all for all ages.” (R) 30 [Dan 3:53] Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory, praiseworthy and glorious above all forever. (R) 31 [Dan 3:54] Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. (R) 32 [Dan 3:55] Blessed are you who look into the depths from your throne upon the cherubim, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. (R) 33 [Dan 3:56] Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven, praiseworthy and glorious forever. (R) GOSPEL Jesus tells us that it is only the truth that can set us free. But why is it that we do not hear more talk of the truth in international debates these days? People talk a lot about money and economics and keeping economies strong, but where do the truths that surround these ideas come from? Certainly not from the Gospel. And then the world will have more serious problems than it had in the beginning. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance. John 8:31-42 31 Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. 36 So if the son frees you, then you will truly be free. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you. 38 I tell you what I have seen in the Father’s presence; then do what you have heard from the Father.” 39 They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. 40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. 41 You are doing the works of your father!” So they said to him, “We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.” 1st READING 2nd READING think: Are we going to lay down our lives in the service of the Kingdom of God? T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Genesis 47-50 John 19-21 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TRIALS COME? In life, we go through trials. In fact, we say, “True gold is tested by fire.” When Ninoy Aquino, one of the Filipino heroes, was incarcerated during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, he remembered and read about people he admired. He quoted Lorenzo Tañada: “When all else is taken away from you, what will remain is character.” The First Reading talks about the trial that some of the Israelites faced with King Nebuchadnezzar. “There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue that you set up.” In the Gospel, we see Jesus experiencing this growing resistance of the Jews who cannot accept Him as the Messiah. Therefore, they wanted to kill Him. First, you will understand that it must be hard for a leader to have people resist what is supposed to be followed by everyone. It must be hard for Jesus to feel rejected. The Jews just wanted to follow what their forefathers believed. They needed to fall back on their ancestors. Second, real witnesses or martyrs are tested in the furnace of life. They prove their fidelity when there is threat even to life. Jesus also was tested at the hour of crucifixion. He was faithful to His Father’s will. Third, fidelity is tested over time. Yahweh’s name is “I am who am” — the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob — the living God. Even Jesus also says, “I am.” He is present, especially to us who believe. There is a favorite quote that summarizes the need for a perspective of time, history and the fortuitous time for God to speak to us: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that’s why you call it present.” Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What have been the big trials of your life? How do you face your trials? Lord Jesus, help me to always believe that when trials come, You are there, too, present in me and with me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
