| Mommy and Inday “My son, remember that in your lifetime you were well-off while the lot of Lazarus was misfortune. Now he is in comfort and you are in agony.”– Luke 16: 24 At age 54, Mommy succumbed to cancer. For her 10th death anniversary, I made a video of snippets from her youth until adulthood and memoirs from family and friends. On her 20th death anniversary, I watched the video again. This time around, I was struck by Inday’s testimonial. You see, Inday was Mommy’s loyal household help and my yaya(nanny). She was already in her late 30s when she finally left us to start her own family. It was providential that I found her years later to hear her stories. She intimated, “Lourdes was a good person. She never treated me as her maid but made me feel like I was part of her family. Sheeven gave me a pearl. She said it was her inheritance for me.” Mommy’s kindness to a person when others would have shown apathy or could have maltreated them because of their status in life earned for her a special place in Inday’s heart. She also earned her place by the Lord’s side. As her only daughter, I strive to emulate her and do little good deeds for the day, every day. Marie Franco (mariefranco_pie@yahoo.com) 8 REFLECTION: Little acts of kindness have a reaping effect in God’s hands. Lord God, let me praise and honor You through little acts of random kindness I do to people around me. St. John of God, religious, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Old Testament prophets never leave the issue of faithfulness to God alone. It is one they keep coming back to time and again. It is easy to see why when we consider that faithfulness to God is the metaphorical ballgame: it is both the beginning and end of the issue of conversion and holiness. We cannot afford to ignore it today as it continues to dominate the landscape of evangelization. Are we willing to do what God tells us to do or do we insist on going our own way? Jeremiah 17:5-10 5 Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, but stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit. 9 More tortuous than all else is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it? 10 I, the Lord, alone probe the mind and test the heart, to reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds. P S A L M Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 R: Blessed are they who hope in the Lord. 1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the Lord watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R) GOSPEL Here is another “chestnut” issue for us to discuss. It is persistently present in the writings of the prophet and the Law of Israel. We ignore this issue at our peril, too. We have a moral responsibility to care for the least powerful in our midst. If we do not do so, we will be called to account for it eventually. It is an enormously difficult problem and all we can hope to do is the little we are able. That is all God asks us to do. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance. Luke 16:19-31 19 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. 20 And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. 22 When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’ 25 Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ 27 He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” READING 2nd READING TODAY’S BLESSING LIST think: We have a moral responsibility to care for the least powerful in our midst. Revelation 4-6 T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Revelations 4-6 TODAY’S BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | FLOODING WITH GOODNESS DROWNS EVIL Pondo ng Pinoy (PnP), a movement spearheaded by His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales for the Archdiocese of Manila, takes its inspiration from the Gospel for today. Its working principle is, “Whatever is good, no matter how small, if done regularly, will lead to salvation!” (“Anumang magaling, kahit maliit, basta’t malimit, ay patungong langit!”) It was meant to help the poor and to encourage the people to do good on a regular basis. In a way, it has a national and secular character vis-a-vis a spiritual goal. The story of Lazarus and the rich man presents clarifications about our faith. First, heaven is available to everyone who does good. Second, riches do not automatically disqualify one from entering heaven, in the same way that poverty does not assure one of attaining eternal life. Third, post-earthly life is a reality. And fourth, small deeds matter a lot before God. In the Gospel, had the rich man shared even just the scraps of his food, it would have increased his chances of attaining eternal life. If the rich man was generous enough to give to the poor, no matter how little, he would have found favor with God. And if he did it again and again to become a habit, he would have been capable of more goodness. But the poor man maintained his dignity and goodness in spite of his poverty. He did not use it to commit a wrong deed against the rich man or anybody. He endured his suffering without inflicting the same to anyone, and he was rewarded for that. With the pouring in of Pondo ng Pinoy cans filled with 25-centavo (or more) coins, it gives a strong sign that people are indeed lovers of goodness. Of course, goodness is not just defined by 25 centavos. We can be creative in doing good every day. Flooding the world with goodness should drown evil. Get into the habit of doing good and do not allow yourself to give in to the seduction of evil. Fr. Benny Tuazon REFLECTION QUESTION: What little thing can you do every day that could flood your world and the people in it with goodness? Just as I was taught when I was little, help me, Lord Jesus, to do at least one good deed every day. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
