| God of New Beginnings “Forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” – Mathew 18:35 I believe that our God is a God of new beginnings and second chances. Every time I avail of His mercy in the Sacrament of Confession, I feel an overwhelming sense of freshness in spirit. Because everything and everyone deserves a fresh start. New beginnings. New life. New hope. New dreams. New endeavors. New friends. New adventures. New challenges. New undertakings. New programs. New victories. Everything must start somewhere, somehow. The first tinge of sunlight starts the day. The first raindrop starts the drizzle. The first sprout starts the spring. The first seed starts the orchard. The first grain starts the rice field. The first note starts the music. The first call starts the mission. One of the greatest fears (and therefore failures) of all is the fear to start — the fear of beginnings. God had the courage to begin. So must we. Go and start the momentum of blessings. Begin. Initiate. Commence. Switch on. Fire up. Set off. Get going. The God of New Beginnings is ever ready to bless you. Then pass on this grace to jump-start someone else by choosing to forgive. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com) 13 REFLECTION: One can’t hold a grudge forever. One-give, two-give, three-give, fourgive. At the count of four, forgiveness starts. Lord, I need Your mercy and grace as much as I need to give it to others. St. Leander of Seville, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING These men were willing to give their lives for standing by the truth of their faith. They are wonderful examples of the commitment that we need today in order to reorient the world’s agenda towards the truth rather than the relativism and the “comfort morality” that is prevalent. The individualism that pervades today’s society fails to recognize the object of the person’s acts. If unborn babies were treated as subjects instead of foreign bodies in a woman’s womb, then it would be next to impossible to argue for the legal right to abortion, as this would not be respecting the rights of the unborn baby. Daniel 3:25, 34-43 [Dan 3:25] Azariah stood up in the fire and prayed aloud: [Dan 3:34] “For your name’s sake, O Lord, do not deliver us up forever, or make void your covenant. 12 [Dan 3:35] Do not take away your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham, your beloved, Isaac your servant, and Israel your holy one, 13 [Dan 3:36] to whom you promised to multiply their offspring like the stars of heaven, or the sand on the shore of the sea. 14 [Dan 3:37] For we are reduced, O Lord, beyond any other nation, brought low everywhere in the world this day because of our sins. 15 [Dan 3:38] We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no burnt offering, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you. 16 [Dan 3:39] But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received; 17 [Dan 3:40] as though it were burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice be in your presence today as we follow you unreservedly; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame. 18 [Dan 3:41] And now we follow you with our whole heart, we fear you and we pray to you. 19 [Dan 3:42] Do not let us be put to shame, but deal with us in your kindness and great mercy. 20 [Dan 3:43] Deliver us by your wonders, and bring glory to your name, O Lord.” P S A L M Psalm 25:4-5, 6, 7, 8, 9 R: Remember your mercies, O Lord. 4 Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (R) 6 Remember that your compassion, O Lord, and your kindness are from of old. 7 In your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O Lord. (R) 8 Good and upright is the Lord; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) GOSPEL The truth about forgiveness is that it is the only way to fully set ourselves free from the sins others have committed against us. If we refuse to forgive the people who have done us wrong, we hold ourselves in contempt because we cannot possibly expect God to forgive our sins if we refuse to do the same to others. It is important for us to understand this, as it is fundamental to human relationships, and thus, human communities. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart; for I am gracious and merciful. Matthew 18:21-35 21 Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. 23 That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. 25 Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. 26 At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ 27 Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. 28 When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ 29 Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ 30 But he refused. Instead, he had him put in prison until he paid back the debt. 31 Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. 32 His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. 33 Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ 34 Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. 35 So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart.” BLESSING LIST think: Forgiveness is fundamental to human relationships, and thus, human communities. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Genesis 1-3 LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | To Forgive — and TO be Forgiven Daily we pray in the Our Father, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” This makes the gift of God’s forgiveness of our sins dependent on our forgiving others. Yet we find it so difficult to forgive. I know an Indonesian nun who once confided to a group, “I haven’t been able to pray the Our Father for the past 15 years now because my father wronged me terribly when I was young and I cannot forgive him.” This nun understood perfectly what the Our Father is all about. She understood that the Lord’s Prayer is a dangerous prayer that sets conditions. And she took that prayer seriously. It is nice to be forgiven — but to forgive? On October 2, 2006, a lone gunman entered an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and shot 10 Amish girls aged six to 13. Charles Roberts shot the girls and then turned the gun on himself. Five of the girls died and the other five were seriously injured. Shocking! But then an even greater shock came. The Amish community, including the families of the dead and wounded children, forgave Roberts. They visited his wife, Marie, and offered their condolences to her and the couple’s three children. Film producer Larry Thompson reacted by saying, “When I heard what happened in the Amish community that day and how the people forgave Charles Roberts, I remembered how I always prayed, ‘Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.’ I could talk the talk but the Amish people in Nickel Mines walked the walk of forgiveness.” This Christian sect took the words of Jesus seriously because they knew there is no way to go around Jesus’ words and example. They knew that we will only be forgiven if we forgive, as Jesus once said, “Forgive and you will be forgiven,” which is stressed in the parable we have read today. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Do you find it difficult to forgive? What could be the reason? Lord, grant me the courage to take the giant step of forgiveness. Teach me that however painful forgiveness may be, it is infinitely better than refusing to forgive. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
