| Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary A RIGHTEOUS LIFE Joseph was a man who always did what was right…. – Matthew 1:19 My cousin Jose, fondly called Pepe, lived a righteous life. When he died in October 2010, he left behind a legacy to the church and to our country. From the prime of his life until his death, he had devoted his time, treasure and talent to the service of mankind, first through the Christian Family Movement and his responsiveness to the plight of his family, relatives and friends. In the last decade of his life, he served as director of the Ephpheta Foundation of the Blind, vice president of the Concerned Citizens Against Pollution and president of the Philippine Solidarity Fund Foundation and the Jubilee Homes for the Poor Foundation. Actively involved with the Council of the Laity of the Philippines, he was appointed as a volunteer observer to the Bids and Awards Committee in several transactions where his intervention saved the government millions of pesos. During his wake, they launched his book, Observers for Good Governance. It’s a manual badly needed in our country where we need to get rid of so much corruption. REFLECTION: How am I living my life? What mark will I leave behind when I die? St. Joseph, pray for us that we may live lives that are righteous, inspiring and uplifting so that when we die, we will have made this world a better place. Amen. St. Joseph, husband of Mary, principal patron of Canada, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING It is important for men to reflect on what it means to be a husband if they want to get married, or already are married. The role of a husband is an important one for the stability and strength of the family. Husbands need to provide a leadership quality that will inspire confidence in times of struggle and trials, and a peaceful presence when the going is good. 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16 4 The Lord spoke to Nathan and said: 5 “Go, tell my servant David, 12 ‘When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. 13 It is he who shall build a house for my name. And I will make his royal throne firm forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’ ” P S A L M Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29 R: The son of David will live forever. 1 [2] The promises of the Lord I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. 2 [3] For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”; in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. (R) 3 [4] “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: 4 [5] Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your throne for all generations.” (R) 26 [27] “He shall say of me, ‘You are my father, my God, the rock, my savior.’ 28 [29] Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him, and my covenant with him stands firm.” (R) 2nd READING Faith is at the heart of the role of any disciple of Jesus. Faith helps us to believe that anything is possible when we have God on our side. Faith must be the focus of our lives as it is what connects us to God — it is at the heart of our relationship with Him. Families are also held together by faith between their members. Let us seek to guard and protect our families from the strife that will tear our relationships apart. Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22 13 Brothers and sisters: It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith. 16 For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist. 18 He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “Thus shall your descendants be.” 22 That is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” GOSPEL St. Joseph seems like a forgotten person in the Holy Family. We do not hear much about him in the Scriptures and there are fewer traditions associated with him than with Mary. Yet the role of Joseph is very important. Like any father, he played an essential role in the formation of the Child Jesus. Let us never forget his role and let us pray for all fathers that they will perform their roles more responsibly. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord; they never cease to praise you. Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 (or Luke 2:41-51) 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. 18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Genesis 19-21 BLESSING LIST think: The role of a husband is an important one for the stability and strength of the family. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Genesis 19-21 LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The Right Man Today is the feast of Joseph, the husband of Mary, foster father of Jesus. We know his story. The Virgin Mary was betrothed to Joseph. She was to marry Joseph, who belonged to the house of David. But when Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant before they came together, he decided to silently divorce her. In those days, a woman who gets pregnant out of wedlock with no known husband was a great humiliation to her and her family. It warrants, by law, the penalty of stoning to death. Joseph did not want her to be humiliated and spared her from death so he decided to divorce her. Joseph was described by the evangelist as a just man. Joseph is just not only because he spared Mary from humiliation and death but most especially because he followed the will of God. He gave his heart to the Father. He accepted his vocation as the foster father of the Son of God and he did it with his whole heart. He gave away his very self for the will of the Father. He was a humble servant of God. Joseph was a man of great faith, a man of virtue, and a very righteous man. By Jewish law, it was Joseph’s “right” to have Mary persecuted because she broke the law. Joseph did not claim that right. The higher claim of love reigned in his heart. Joseph teaches us today a lesson on justice. Christian justice is not only a matter of claiming what is my right. More importantly, it is claiming what is right. Joseph did claim his right — he did what was right. Fr. Joel Jason REFLECTION QUESTION: What virtue of St. Joseph do you want to imitate? Learn from him. Holy and Almighty Father, teach us how to give and to give without asking something in return. Teach me to have that strong faith and obey Your will even when we cannot understand everything. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
