| Listen! Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. – Jeremiah 7:23 My eldest daughter, who is not yet three, is a strong-willed child. I tell her not to stand on her chair and she’ll still do it. I warn her not to jump because she might hurt herself but she’ll jump anyway. When I tell her not to hit her baby sister, she’ll continue to whack her. Consequently, she’s had minor accidents and have gotten bruises and bumps. She’s also inflicted the same on her little sister. If only she’d listened, she’d spare herself — and others — from a lot of trouble. Every time she’s up to no good, I’d remind her, “Listen to Mama!” And almost simultaneously I feel like the Lord echoes my rebuke back to me. “Listen to Abba! Listen to Your Heavenly Father. Do not disobey. You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble.” When I was a baby Christian, I thought that all the restrictions in the Bible were meant to discipline me and give me a hard time so I can earn my place in heaven. But now I’ve learned that God’s commands are all for my good, because He knows better and wants to spare me from unnecessary suffering. Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Do you listen to your Father? Lord, I’m sorry for the times I’ve been hardheaded. Grant me the gift of obedience so that I don’t just listen to You but follow You as well. St. Louise de Marillac, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Listening to the voice of God is important. A disciple cannot do his master’s bidding without listening attentively to the words of his master. One of God’s biggest complaints about the Jews in the Old Testament is that they were reluctant to listen to Him and their many other leaders. This spelled disaster for them more than once. The only way to change this defeat into a victory is by listening and obeying the Word of God. Jeremiah 7:23-28 23 Thus says the Lord: This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. 24 But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me. 25 From the day that your fathers left the land of Egypt even to this day, I have sent you untiringly all my servants the prophets. 26 Yet they have not obeyed me nor paid heed; they have stiffened their necks and done worse than their fathers. 27 When you speak all these words to them, they will not listen to you either; when you call to them, they will not answer you. 28 Say to them: This is the nation which does not listen to the voice of the Lord, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech. P S A L M Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9 R: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. 1 Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalm to him. (R) 6 Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us. 7 For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides. (R) Oh, that today you would hear his voice: 8 “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works.” (R) GOSPEL I remember a song from my childhood. It was from Sesame Street, and one of the lines was, “If I knew you were coming, I would have baked a cake!” We know that temptation is coming to us; why are we so often unprepared to resist it? We need to get serious about dealing with the devil in this life. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, for I am gracious and merciful. Luke 11:14-23 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke and the crowds were amazed. 15 Some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” 16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. 17 But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. 18 And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. 19 If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” LIST think: We know that temptation is coming to us; why are we so often unprepared to resist it? T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Genesis 7-9 s 7-9 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Am I a Christian “balimbing”? “Balimbing” (literally a star fruit) is a word often used for people who cannot make clear decisions, or who say “yes” today and “no” tomorrow. We are surrounded by people who try to sit on both sides of the fence, depending on where it is more convenient for them that moment. We observe such an attitude especially during election time when politicians begin to switch from one party to another. What Jesus tells us today is that there is no place for neutrality in Christian life. This is expressed with nearly brutal frankness in the Book of Revelation where the Risen Lord says to the people of Laodicea, “I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” The one attitude that the Risen Lord condemns is indifference and neutrality. With Christ, no compromise is possible. He wants committed followers who make Him visible in this world. And one thing Jesus wasn’t is indifferent. On the contrary, He stood up for what He had come into the world and did not compromise even when He saw His cruel death inevitable. Too many people today seem to drift into a conventional and meaningless Christianity, compromising their faith with popular trends in society. Many ignore the teachings of the Church and Christ if the teachings do not fit into their lifestyle. Some go to Mass only on Christmas. So many come late to Mass, Sunday after Sunday, and still go and receive Holy Communion. And what about our Christian faith in daily life? Too often, Christians pray on Sunday during the one-hour Mass but, once outside the Church, they live a life totally opposite to what Christ teaches. The many crimes committed and the corruption and dishonesty we encounter in every level of public life should be absent in a Christian country. I wonder what Jesus would tell us if He would give a sermon to His followers in our country? Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Do you stand up daily for your Christian faith and belief? Or do you sway in front of people who have opposite ideas? Lord, unfortunately, what You wrote to the Laodiceans applies also to me. I need Your help and the power of the Holy Spirit to be more upright and committed. Please help me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
