| Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Traveling with God “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”– Acts 1:8 I have been traveling a lot lately and I meet people from different places. Some of them have not even heard about the Philippines so they tend to ask many questions. It’s embarrassing that sometimes I can’t even give accurate information about the country I’m from. I realize it would have been a great opportunity to promote tourism in the Philippines had I made the extra effort to know more about the country. By answering their queries, I could hopefully attract tourists to visit. Jesus commissioned us to represent Him in this world and every day we have the opportunity to share His Good News. We don’t even need to go anywhere to accomplish our mission. With the technology through which many of us connect with others using different social networking websites and our ability to communicate, we can always bear witness to those we encounter each day — family, coworkers, friends, and even strangers. Let us then make the most of every chance we get to share God’s goodness. Jane Gonzales-Rauch (mgr516@gmail.com) 20 REFLECTION: We are God’s hands and feet in this world. Let us bring the Good News wherever He leads us. Loving Father, I pray that the Holy Spirit will propel me to share the message of Jesus and reach out to people around me. St. Bernardine of Siena, priest, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING The Holy Spirit is given to everyone present at the Pentecost and this symbolizes the fact that the Holy Spirit is given to all people at baptism. We should never doubt that we do not have the Holy Spirit, no matter how inactive He may seem to be at any particular time in our lives. God is always faithful to His promises and there is none greater than the gift of the Holy Spirit to all. Acts 1:1-11 1 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught 2 until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; 5 for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. 10 While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” P S A L M Psalm 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 R: God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. 1 [2] All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness, 2 [3] for the Lord, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. (R) 5 [6] God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the Lord, amid trumpet blasts. 6 [7] Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise. (R) 7 [8] For the king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. 8 [9] God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne. (R) 2ND READING While we live under the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, the author of this letter implores us “to do all we can to preserve the unity of the Spirit.” It is essential that we understand that the unity of the Spirit is a reference to the life of the Church and thus this is an exhortation that covers every aspect of our Christian lives. We must do all we can within our power as disciples of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will make up for what is lacking. Ephesians 4:1-13 (or Ephesians 1:17-23) 1 Brothers and sisters, I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, 3 striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: 4 one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore, it says: “He ascended on high and took prisoners captive; he gave gifts to men.” 9 What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended into the lower regions of the earth? 10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. 11 And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ. GOSPEL Jesus exhorts His followers to take the Gospel to all creation. It is only the Good News of our salvation that has the power to change society for the better in an enduring and lasting manner. The power of sin has been defeated but this does not mean that it has been banished as a temptation. We need to live and proclaim the Gospel everywhere in order to banish sin forever. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world. Mark 16:15-20 15 Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. 18 They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. 20 But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. BLESSING LIST think: The power of sin has been defeated but this does not mean that it has been banished as a temptation. But perhaps He is implying that His Ascension into heaven isn’t really a leave-taking in the first place. Rather, our Lord is now entering into a new dimension of presence. No longer physical, but nonetheless real and valid. In fact, now that we no longer have the literal, physical presence of Jesus with us, He is nevertheless present in us through various other ways: in our liturgical gatherings, in His Word, and in the Holy Eucharist. We can also say, to some extent, that He is present in the human person, in each and every one of us. And thank God, even in today’s world, we are not without shining exemplars of God’s loving presence in the saints. Through them (even if not necessarily the official, canonized ones), the light of Christ’s earthly life shines in our midst. Saints need not be exceptional, hard-to-find people in this world. They’re just actually there, going about their ordinary everyday affairs. They’re not bathed in celestial light or perfumed with sanctity. They have no visions and perform no miracles. They are men and women who simply love God and their neighbor, and they prove it in a thousand different ways in their work, in their prayer, and acts of self-sacrificing charity. And so, since Jesus is no longer physically present with us now, it’s up to the “plain saints” (including us hopefully) to continue His work here on earth. Not just to continue it, in fact, but even to “surpass” it (see John 14:12)! If Jesus were to remain here on earth still, He would be in a sense “limited” by the dimensions of time and space. We now can “exceed” Him in our own little way as we carry out the unfinished business He had begun. We are now the extensions of our Lord Jesus, His proxies, if you will.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB REFLECTION QUESTION: In what ways are you carrying out Jesus’ unfinished business? Lord Jesus, You have left us with the mission to fulfill Your plan for our lives. Help us to do them with zeal and with love. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
