| A ROOM FOR TISAY “My Father’s house has many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you…” – John 14:2 That Sunday night, my husband Ed and I attended a party and our son Paolo went for his gym workout. We all came home at past 11 p.m. and found Tisay, our one and only dog for the past 12 years, gasping for breath. Then limply, she wagged her tail once and breathed her last. I was sobbing as I lighted a candle. I began to pray, “Our Father… Hail Mary...” and when I was saying, “Eternal rest grant unto her soul,” Paolo, his eyes red with tears, said, “Mommy, she has no soul.” And so in my mind I kind of asked God if I would ever see Tisay again. God promptly answered my question. You see, the following day, I had to do this Didacheassignment. To my amazement, the readings were about God raising Jesus from death (Acts 13:30) and Jesus promising his disciples rooms for them in heaven (John 14:2). Coincidence? Maybe God was assuring me that Tisay has a room in His house? What is sure though is that as Jesus promised, we humans have a place there. Now all we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. Cynthia Santiago (cusantiago@gmail.com) 4 REFLECTION: Imagine Your room in heaven. Lord, may I be worthy of Your sacrifice on the cross, that I may see You face to face in Your House. Blessed Michael Giedroyc, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Paul reminds his listeners that the Jews have been waiting for the Messiah for a long time. The irony is that so many of them fail to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Nevertheless, this does not mean that we should hold back. God is calling all men and women to have faith in the Gospel. Let us take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to our faith and serve the mission of the Gospel as best as we can. Acts 13:26-33 26 When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue: “My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. 27 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath. 28 For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death, 29 and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses before the people. 32 We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our fathers 33 he has brought to fulfillment for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my son; this day I have begotten you.’” P S A L M Psalm 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11 R: You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. 6 “I myself have set up my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.” (R) 8 “Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. 9 You shall rule them with an iron rod; you shall shatter them like an earthen dish.” (R) 10 And now, O kings, give heed; take warning, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice. (R) GOSPEL Jesus promises the people that He has a place prepared for us all in heaven. Is any one of us crazy enough to resist the call of faith even unto death? Jesus affirms His commitment to us in three different ways in the Gospel: when He created us, when He came to redeem us, and in the future when He will welcome us in the place He has prepared for us in eternal life. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:1-6 1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” think: Is any one of us crazy enough to resist the call of faith even unto death? T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Deuteronomy 8-11 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The Way, the Truth and the Life One time, I got lost in the narrow streets of Rome. So I asked somebody for directions on how to find the Pantheon. The good man just smiled and shook his head and, typical for an Italian, made some grand gestures with his hands as he didn’t understand English. Finally I found a young student who told me to go straight, then turn left at the second corner, right at the third corner, cross the small piazza where I should take the small street on the right, and so on. Not even half-way, I was lost again. When I saw a priest approaching, I asked him for direction. He smiled and said in broken English, “Come, I will you go and bring you to Pantheon.” The kind student tried to show me the way, but the priest accompanied me and so became “the way.” This is what Jesus meant when He answered the honest question of Thomas, saying, “I am the Way.” He surely gave us many directions but more important is the fact that He accompanies us. Remember the last words Jesus spoke to His disciples? “I am with you always.” He did not just give directions — He walks with us on our way through this world and through our often difficult lives. Jesus is our companion, unseen but really at our side, as He accompanied, incognito, the two disciples on their way to Emmaus. There is even more. Jesus said that He is not only the Way but also “the Truth and the Life.” In a world where we often do not know anymore who speaks the truth, whom to trust, Jesus assures us that in Him there is no falsehood. He never tries to lure us into following Him by false promises and sweet talk. He is always completely honest — so honest that many of His admirers left Him when He spoke about the cross that we have to take up and His flesh that we have to eat. And He is “the Life” by giving Himself as spiritual nourishment in the Eucharist. To follow Christ, therefore, we are absolutely safe, as long as we really trust Him and His words. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD REFLECTION QUESTION: Do you give yourself completely and with full trust to the Lord, knowing that only He can bring you to the final goal? Lord, I feel often insecure in this confusing world. I ask myself at times where am I going. Lord, teach me to trust You more. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
