| Shut Down for God To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to bring you faultless and joyful before his glorious presence. – Jude 24 Years ago, there was an amazing story in the newspaper entitled “Motel Chain Shuts Down for God.” It was about Wyden King, chairman of Anito, a popular motel chain. It served as a site for lovers’ trysts for decades. The story said that the business had 11,000 customers and brought in as much as P2 million a day. Yet Mr. King decided to close it down because God told him to! According to the news item, God ordered him to stop expanding in 1994, but it took a long time for him to obey. “I was blinded by money, but it took the grace of the Lord to open my eyes…. Yet it was a struggle to let go,” he was quoted as saying. We all have our own struggles against things we know are wrong yet are so tempting and delightful to the flesh. For some it may be cigarettes. Or a married lover. Or an under-the-table deal. Sometimes, like Wyden, it takes years for us to do what is right. Don’t despair. Just ask God to hold on to you. He will guide you back into His presence. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com) 2 REFLECTION: What are you holding on to that is keeping you from enjoying God’s presence? Lord, help me to put my love for You above all earthly loves. Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, martyrs, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING It is only by the mercy of God that we have received the gift of eternal life. Jude reminds us of this as he exhorts us to surrender to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to guide us in the path of God’s will. He also reminds us to care for one another in love. Love is the true measure of a disciple of Jesus, not hours spent in prayer or theological knowledge. Jude 17, 20-25 17 Beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 Build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 On those who waver, have mercy; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh. 24 To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished and exultant, in the presence of his glory, 25 to the only God, our savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now, and for ages to come. Amen. P S A L M Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6 R: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. 1 [2] O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water. (R) 2 [3] Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, 3 [4] for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you. (R) 4 [5] Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. 5 [6] As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you. (R) GOSPEL Jesus is not interested in the semantics of an argument; He is interested in action. When and how do we put into practice the Gospel values we have come to know through our conversion? This is what really matters: Have we truly entered into the process of our salvation or not? Jesus wants to save us by His grace but He has to know that is what we want, too. He will judge what we want by the actions we perform. Let us choose wisely what we do and do not do. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; giving thanks to God the Father through him. Mark 11:27-33 27 Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.” 31 They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?” — they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 33 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.” LIST BLESSING think: Love is the true measure of a disciple of Jesus, not hours spent in prayer or theological knowledge. 2 Samuel 9-12 T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Samuel 9-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE REAL SOURCE OF AUTHORITY The Gospel of Mark reminds us of the people in authority who forgot the very source of their authority. They asked Jesus the source of His authority: “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” Strange that they were asking Jesus when they should be asking it to themselves. They were caught by their own trap. They could not recognize the fact that they were blinded and could not see the Author of Life unfolding before them: the blind see, the lame walk, the good news preached to them. They would be focused on astrology but would not see the One who held the stars. They were so focused on the issue of blasphemy but they could not see the good news of the glory of God. In contrast, the psalmist sings of the ardent longing: “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.” It acknowledges God’s authority: “Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you.” Jesus was radical in His approach: He shook their lifestyle and the very source of their power. Earlier, Jesus overturned the tables of moneychangers and traders because they have desecrated the Temple. What is the real source of authority? The source is the Spirit of wisdom, courage and love. Even more important is the end of all authority — it does not call attention to itself but proclaims, “Glory be to this only God our savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” Authority is not lording over others but laying down one’s life so that others may live! Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What are your traps or excuses before you acknowledge the Author of Life? If you discern your life, how do you recognize the traps of the enemy? Lord Jesus, help me to liberate myself from the traps of false authority in my life. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
