| Feast of Sts. Philip and James, Apostles 3 PRAYER POWER “If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.” – John 14:14 We woke up in the middle of the night to find Tesa, our eight-year-old daughter, vomiting. We could see that she was in pain, and was distressed. When she gained strength to speak, the first thing she said was, “Please pray for me.” If I were in her situation, I would have complained about the pain in my tummy. Maybe I would have asked for medicine. But asking for prayers would not have been the first. Tesa believes that prayer can do anything. It is her recourse when she can’t sleep at night, when someone is ill and when she experiences joyful or unpleasant occasions. When we have difficulty finding a good parking slot, Tesa, with her sister Iani, immediately pray and ask God for one. And every single time, God answers. Her requests may be simple, but the Lord answers them anyway. Didn’t He say “Ask anything in My Name”? REFLECTION: There is no big or small request for God. He hears them all. Lord, I lift up every little concern that I have and all the big problems that I have, knowing that You will answer them by Your grace and in Your perfect timing. Sts. Philip and James, Apostles, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Paul affirms that it is not up to us to create the Gospel. All we have to do is simply pass on what we have heard and received. This is the nature of Tradition and there is no Tradition more important than the kerygma or content of the Gospel. It is through this that we will experience the blessing of a new life — when we let go of the old and embrace the message of the Good News of our salvation. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 1 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. 2 Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; 4 that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; 5 that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the Apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. P S A L M Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5 R: Their message goes out through all the earth. 1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] Through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. (R) GOSPEL Philip does not yet fully understand the nature or content of the Gospel. At least he is honest enough to say so. We should never fear asking questions about our faith that will increase our knowledge and capacity to proclaim the Gospel. There are some aspects of our faith that will remain a mystery and we have to be content to live without fully understanding them. This should not be a problem in the same way that many of us can’t explain how a computer works but are happy to use them. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord; Philip, whoever has seen me has seen the Father. John 14:6-14 6 Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” think: We should never fear asking questions about our faith that will increase our knowledge and capacity to proclaim the Gospel. Philip and James? We have to admit: Not much. The only detail we have about Philip is in the Gospel of John who tells us that he came from Bethsaida, the place of Peter and Andrew. It seems he liked to bring people to Jesus: first, his friend Nathanael, then the boy with the loaves and fishes, and again later some Greeks who wanted to meet the Lord. But Philip is also a man who had difficulty understanding Jesus. In today’s Gospel passage, Philip shows, with his naïve question, that he was not on top of things. In spite of his weaknesses, he responded immediately to Jesus’ call and brings his friend to Jesus. And finally, it is certain that he handed his life over to him totally. According to some old documents (“Acts of Philip”), Philip preached in Greece and then in Phrygia, where he was killed for his faith. And St. James? Beside James “the Greater,” son of Zebedee and brother of John, another James appears in the Gospel, who is called “the Less.” He also is part of the list of the Twelve Apostles chosen personally by Jesus, and is always specified as “son of Alphaeus.” We have to admit that we don’t know anything more about him, except that he was chosen by Jesus as an Apostle. That he is called James the Less does not mean that he was not so important, he was either short of stature or younger than the other James. What do these two obscure Apostles teach us? Maybe it is this: If even an Apostle of Jesus left so little trace in history, we should not be disappointed at all if our own personal lives also leave little or no traces in history. What counts is the fact that Jesus chose them and us to be His followers. It shows that we are of great value in God’s eyes. We may be unimportant in the eyes of people, but we are very important in the eyes of God. And that’s what matters most.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD REFLECTION QUESTION: Do you seek recognition more rather than just do simply what God wants you to do? Make me humble, Lord, that I may live always only for You and never seek fame in this world. May my goal be always only what counts in Your eyes. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
