| MOCKED “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.” – John 15:18 “That’s stupid!” he said with a scornful chuckle. This man — a friend’s friend — and I were talking about faith matters. He blurted that out when I told him that people sometimes get a wake-up call from God. “Why do you even need a wake-up call to renew your faith in God? That means your belief system has poor foundations,” he said. He had all the refutations to my faith claims. Impressive. Born a Catholic, he became a Born Again and now is agnostic because he said he couldn’t find the answers to his many questions about God’s existence. He’s well-read when it comes to the religions of the world. But I guess, in his quest for answers, more confusion set in. OK, God, I thought, this man is mocking me for believing in You. Still, I smiled throughout our conversation. My parting words to him: “Bless you.” His parting words to me: “Oh, no… don’t bless me. I don’t need it. You need it more.” Who was I to feel bad about that? Jesus was mocked in the worst way during His time. I was just too glad that between that man and me, I am the believer. I pray that someday his heart would see God’s light. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com) 12 REFLECTION: Have you ever been mocked for your faith? How did you react? Father, You are King over the flood. I will be still and know You are God. Sts. Nereus and Achilleus, martyrs, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING The churches, the fledgling communities set up by Paul and others in various centers of the Roman Empire, grew daily in numbers. The disciples did not waste their time in getting on with the mission of the Gospel. There was an urgency in their hearts. It would be good if we rediscover that sense of urgency. The relativism of today’s cultural milieu in the West is slowly eating away at the sharpness of the Gospel message. We need to do something about it now. Acts 16:1-10 1 Paul reached also Derbe and Lystra where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him, 3 and Paul wanted him to come along with him. On account of the Jews of that region, Paul had him circumcised, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they traveled from city to city, they handed on to the people for observance the decisions reached by the apostles and presbyters in Jerusalem. 5 Day after day the churches grew stronger in faith and increased in number. 6 They traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian territory because they had been prevented by the Holy Spirit from preaching the message in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to Mysia, they tried to go on into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them, 8 so they crossed through Mysia and came down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision. A Macedonian stood before him and implored him with these words, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 When he had seen the vision, we sought passage to Macedonia at once, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to them. P S A L M Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5 R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. 1 Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; 2 serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) 3 Know that the Lord is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) 5 The Lord is good: his kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R) GOSPEL The world is not necessarily our friend. In John’s Gospel, the “world” refers to the powers that do not accept the Gospel during the time of Jesus. This same “world” exists today. If we are not careful, we will see the Gospel erode before our eyes until we can no longer distinguish it from the comfort seeking, self-focused world in which we live. We must fight against this trend whatever the cost may be. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. John 15:18-21 18 Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.” LIST think: If we are not careful we will see the Gospel erode before our eyes until we can no longer distinguish it from the comfort-seeking, self-focused world in which we live. GOSPEL PSALM T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Joshua 5-8 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE “ABSENT” GOD I remember when my friend was introducing me for the first time to the computer. I wasn’t a fast learner and I thought of giving up and going back to my old and reliable typewriter. Once, I was tinkering with the keyboard and after some moments of inactivity, the screen went totally blank. I panicked, thinking that I may have punched a wrong key or executed an illegal operation. But my friend calmly said, “Don’t worry. It’s a normal computer procedure. The computer is still there. It is still working in the background, performing an unseen operation.” He added, “Don’t let go.” Usually we panic when we don’t see the things we want to see. We become agitated and we complain when we are not visually assured. Our salvation history is a story of humanity always demanding from God something to see: signs, miracles, wonders, besides the many God has already done. Look at the Israelites’ experience with Moses in the desert. They could no longer “see” the meat and melons that they are fed with in Egypt. All they see is the manna that God provides them. Being the visually-oriented people that they are, they complained to Moses. They forgot to acknowledge the invisible hand of Yahweh who brought them out of Egypt. The Gospel is about Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples. He will no longer be seen. Jesus knows how visually-oriented the Apostles can be. They might think He has withheld His hand. And so, like a consoling friend, He prepares them for the impending persecutions that will befall them. But the Risen Christ will still be there, working in the background, performing an unseen operation in their lives. It is the same with us. In the Eucharist, let us feel Jesus comforting us. Let us pray for the grace to overcome our propensity to be visually-oriented. God never abandons His people. He is there in our joys and triumphs, just as He is there in our loneliness, failures and frustrations. Amidst the storm, He is there, “working in the background, performing an unseen operation.” Friend, don’t let go! Fr. Joel Jason REFLECTION QUESTION: In the face of life’s vicissitudes, do you walk by faith and not by sight (see 2 Corinthians 5:7)? Risen Lord, You continue to be with me in Your Risen glory. Help me to perceive Your many unseen ways. Help me to walk by faith and not only by sight. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
