| BLESSING IN DISGUISE “For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me….” – John 16:27 When the person on whom we relied to build our ministry defected to another community, I felt disgusted. If I weren’t a Christian, and if obedience to a call was not my primary motive for serving, I would have simply left and moved on to a new mission field. But I discerned if the Lord really wanted me elsewhere even as I started to look for other ministries I could serve in. I ended up getting hired by another ministry on a part-time basis while keeping my ties with my original group. I decided that I would leave the latter only if the Lord would tell me to move on. Eventually, things returned to normal in our ministry except that I now have a part-time job in another ministry. Looking back, I realized that the Lord allowed that experience of “disgust” to push me to a part-time job. I didn’t mind surviving on an allowance, which was all I was getting in my original ministry, as long as I was doing my mission. But the Father who loves me knew my needs and provided me with much more. Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Do I give up when things do not work according to what I want? Do I seek God’s will in everything I do? Loving Father, I surrender to You all my decisions. May my life work only according to Your plan because I know it is the best for me. Amen. St. Theophilus of Corte, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING This scriptural presentation of an understanding of two baptisms helps us realize that having our sins forgiven (baptism of John) is not enough for salvation. We also have to live the life of the Holy Spirit (baptism of Jesus as the Church fully understands it), or it is all mere “window-dressing,” so to speak. Forgiveness of our sins is a good start, but there is so much more that God offers us in the life of the Holy Spirit. Acts 18:23-28 23 After staying in Antioch some time, Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence through the Galatian country and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples. 24 A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus. He was an authority on the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord and, with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. After his arrival he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace. 28 He vigorously refuted the Jews in public, establishing from the scriptures that the Christ is Jesus. P S A L M Psalm 47:2-3, 8-9, 10 R: God is king of all the earth. 1 [2] All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness, 2 [3] for the Lord, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. (R) 7 [8] For the king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. 8 [9] God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne. (R) 9 [10] The princes of the peoples are gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. For God’s are the guardians of the earth; He is supreme. (R) GOSPEL The example of Jesus’ life tells us what these words of Jesus really mean. We cannot ask God for the winning numbers in a lottery draw. We can ask for anything within His will for our life and we will receive it. These words call us to conform our lives to the will of God, and not conform His will to ours. This is an important distinction that will help us reject the idea of a prosperity Gospel, where we are in charge of what happens, and an understanding of how God works all things for our good including our suffering. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I came from the Father and have come into the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. LIST John 16:23-28 23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 25 “I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” think: Forgiveness of our sins is a good start, but there is so much more that God offers us in the life of the Holy Spirit. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Judges 9-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | LEFT BEHIND BUT NOT ABANDONED On this penultimate day before the Solemnity of Jesus’ Ascension, it’s as if He Himself is already bidding us goodbye. We read in the last verse of our Gospel passage today, “Now I am leaving the world to go to the Father.” But far from a cold, heartless leave-taking, Jesus’ goodbye is one full of assurances and provisions. He sees to it that we will not be left alone and abandoned. In other words, He makes sure that we will not be impoverished with His physical departure. The early Christian community seems to have picked up from Jesus such a care and providence for others. We have in our First Reading the person of Apollos, “a man of eloquence... full of spiritual fervor.” His arrival brought so much encouragement and clarity to the early Christian believers, through his theological and apologetic discourses. More than equipping us with a defensive reinforcement against doctrinal attacks, Jesus for His part provides us an unlimited access to the Father, a “bottomless” source of graces for whatever need we might have. “Whatever you ask the Father, he will give you in my name... Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.” If such is the case then, let us rejoice and be grateful to Jesus. We can therefore tell Him, “Go ahead, then. By all means, leave us. We will not be saddened by Your departure, for we know that You have made sure that we will not be in difficulty and want. Yes, by all means, go, dear Jesus!” Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Have you thought of what would happen to your loved ones when you are called home by the Father? Why not start putting your life in order? Lord Jesus, thank You for leaving us with a rich source of nourishment — the Sacraments, the Church, the Scriptures and Tradition. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
