| A Meaningful Lifestyle “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete.” – John 15:11 When I visit the US, I would stay with relatives in their homes. Inevitably, I’d notice their garages full of all sorts of unused brand new items that are getting old. My relatives would tell me that they haven’t found the time to use them. “The more people have, the more they want, and less time for leisure is left to enjoy what they have,” said a Christian article that I read. How true. Early in life, I guarded myself from falling into this similar situation where I would work hard so I could afford to buy lots of things. Also, I didn’t want to indulge in too much activity that would clutter my everyday life. I stuck to the more simple but meaningful things. Later, I discovered that serving other people through a community was one of the most fulfilling activities of my life. And this fulfillment has brought unspeakable joy to my heart. Rolly España (rnespana@nwineskin.com) 10 REFLECTION: Have you taken stock of your activities and your possessions lately? Are they meaningful? Serving You and Your people has given more value to my life. Continue to use me for Your purpose, this I pray. St. Damien of Molokai, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Peter puts forward the argument that it is the grace of God that saves us. Paul and Barnabas, the two men entrusted to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles a couple of chapters earlier in the Book of Acts, share about their experiences, undoubtedly witnessing to the fact that circumcision has precisely nothing to do with either receiving the grace of salvation or the Gospel itself. Acts 15:7-21 7 After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to the Apostles and presbyters, “My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the Gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit just as he did us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts. 10 Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.” 12 The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them. 13 After they had fallen silent, James responded, “My brothers, listen to me. 14 Symeon has described how God first concerned himself with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name. 15 The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written: 16 ‘After this I shall return and rebuild the fallen hut of David; from its ruins I shall rebuild it and raise it up again, 17 so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked. Thus says the Lord who accomplishes these things, 18 known from of old.’ 19 It is my judgment, therefore, that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. 21 For Moses, for generations now, has had those who proclaim him in every town, as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath.” P S A L M Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 10 R: Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations. 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all you lands. 2 Sing to the Lord; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 10 Say among the nations: The Lord is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R) GOSPEL Jesus now tells us that love is the heart of the matter. We must all remain in the love of God if we are truly to become His disciples. The processes of conversion and discipleship all make much more sense when we consider them from within the context of God’s love for us. And when we remain in God’s love, we will be better able to love one another. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. John 15:9-11 9 Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. (R) 1st READING 2nd READING think: We must all remain in the love of God if we are truly to become His disciples. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Deuteronomy 31-34 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Do As He Commands Once, a not-so-good-looking man visited a photographer known to be very good in his trade. He had his picture taken and instructed the photographer to make him look good. After the session, the photographer gave him his portrait and true enough it was a very beautiful picture. He proudly showed it to his friend. After looking at the picture, his friend exclaimed, “You look so handsome in this photo, it doesn’t look like you!” Isn’t it true that sometimes we can say beautiful things in our prayers to the Lord yet our actions show the reverse? So much so that when the Lord hears our words and compares it with our actions, He would say, “What you said is very beautiful... It doesn’t seem like you.” In the Gospel today, Jesus admonishes His disciples to live out concretely their intentions of loving Him. How? By living out His commandments. This is a continuous challenge of the Easter season. As I sit here writing out this reflection, I feel the weight of this Christian obligation. I remember once reading, “The Word was made flesh, not ink.” What I type here will soon be printed in ink. People will read these reflections. For me, it is a continuous summon not to confine my personal discipleship to the beautiful words I’m punching on my computer keyboards. Today, express your desire of loving the Lord. Put flesh to the words you read printed in ink. Let us make sure that when the Lord listens to our beautiful words and compares them with our actions, He will not say, “You say so many beautiful things, they don’t seem like you.” Fr. Joel Jason REFLECTION QUESTION: Christian discipleship is inseparable from obedience. Do you follow only those commands which do not exact much from you? Lord Jesus, I believe in Your wisdom and love. Your commands do not enslave. Banish from my heart any fear of Your commandments and replace it with trust and confidence. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
