| SAY THE WORD The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But say the word and my servant will be healed…” – Matthew 8:5-8 Lord, only say the word, and our baby will be healed. As I write this, I’m watching my 11- month-old baby sleeping in her hospital bed. What we thought was a harmless cold turned into a stubborn fever and eventually into mild pneumonia. As a first-time parent and this being our daughter’s first sickness, you can imagine how extremely anxious and sad I am. Seeing her listless and uninterested in play — the sparkle in her eyes gone and replaced by distant gazes, hearing her inconsolable cries for help, and feeling the unusual heat from her tight embraces, all make me wish I could take her place and go through the sickness for her. I hate seeing her suffer. I believe God doesn’t like seeing any of His children suffer either. So why all the sickness and pain in the world? Well, because it’s an imperfect world. I’ve learned that these instances are part of life and are not what God desires, but they are opportunities for us to pray and stand in the gap for others — to come before God in faith, knowing that when we ask and believe, we will receive the healing He wants to give us in the first place. Geraldine G. Catral (teachergeegee@yahoo.com) 28 REFLECTION: With boldness and faith, we can stand in the gap for others. Who will you pray for today? Lord, only say the word, and Your servant will be healed. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Isaiah has a vision of the Kingdom of God as a great mountain. We know that a mountain is unshakable and eternal, and so is God’s Kingdom and reign in this world. Although it may at times seem that Satan’s kingdom prevails, we know that this is an illusion because God has already established Jesus as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Each of us has a privilege to be part of this great work of establishing the Kingdom of God by our deeds of love and mercy. Isaiah 2:1-5 1 This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come, the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it; 3 many peoples shall come and say: “Come, let us climb the LORD’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.” For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD! P S A L M Psalms 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. 1 I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.” 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R) 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! 7 May peace be within your walls, prosperity in your buildings. (R) 8 Because of my relatives and friends I will say, “Peace be within you!” 9 Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. (R) G O S P E L A Roman centurion who was a “God fearer,” that is a pagan who shared in the Synagogue worship with the Jews, approaches Jesus to heal his servant. Jesus is willing to go with him. But when Jesus starts to go to his house, the centurion says there is no need for Him to come to his house as he is unworthy. All He needs to do is to say the word and the servant will be healed. Jesus is amazed and delighted in this man’s faith. Let us imitate this Roman soldier’s faith and also have complete confidence in the Lord’s power to heal us. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Come and save us, Lord our God; let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 8:5-11 5 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” 7 He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” 8 The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven.” my reflections t h i n k : Let us imitate the Roman soldier’s faith and also have complete confidence in the Lord’s power to heal us. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Romans 5-8 Romans 5-8 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | I AM NOT WORTHY A foreigner, a Gentile, approaches Jesus. He asks Jesus to cure a servant who happens to be paralyzed. Jesus is amazed at the centurion’s faith. He simply asks Jesus to issue the command and the centurion believes that it will occur. As a man of authority himself, he understands the power there is in issuing commands. He knows that people would obey him. People are under his authority. He commands and they act! Jesus is amazed at this act of faith. The faith of the centurion opens the door for Jesus to enter the world of the Gentiles. Jesus has come to save and heal. The response of the centurion is the same response we proclaim to the Lord at the time of Holy Communion in Mass. When the priest raises the Sacred Host in his hand and points to the Lamb of God, we say, “Lord I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” These are the very same words of humility spoken by the centurion. We participate in the Lord’s Supper, the communion of love and life, healing and salvation of the Lord. May our faith please Him as we seek Him who is our Savior. Advent is that time we remember that salvation has dawned upon us. During this time, we remember the humility of God in becoming a small child. He is born in utter poverty out of love for humanity. In this light, we want to respond in humility. Jesus comes under our roof, into our homes, into our hearts, into our lives, into our society. Are we ready to receive Him, the Healer and Savior of the world? The Greek word salous is close to our English word saved. It is derived from the word “health.” So Jesus is Savior, the Health of the world, the Healer of the world. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Pray that the Lord will come and heal those who are sick in your midst. Lord, I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Amen. St. James Thompson, Blessed, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
