| THE BREAKTHROUGH HURDLE But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. – Matthew 25:18 The major breakthroughs in my life happened because I decided to break free from my comfort zones. I was a teenager when I took the challenge of giving my first talk in a prayer meeting and, through the years, eventually grew into an international conference speaker. When I decided to leave the security of a regular job to tread the unknown waters of becoming an entrepreneur, I prospered. When I took a chance on a nearly improbable scholarship, I ended up being one of this prominent school’s top scholars. I’ve learned that: 1. God has put talents in me waiting to be discovered and unleashed. 2. Every time I took the challenge and overcame a major hurdle, my talent went up another notch higher. 3. Everything I wanted is just outside of my comfort zones. Imagine what great tragedy it is for people who simply dig a hole, bury their talent, pass up the opportunity to break free from their comfort zones and miss out on God’s best. The “joy of the Master” is being the best that I can be, as He created me to be. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) 13 REFLECTION: Do you have a tough hurdle now that challenges you to go beyond your comfort zone? Friend, maybe it’s time to break free towards greater heights. Father, You desire me to prosper and grow beyond my wildest imagination. Give me the courage and the will to work hard to go beyond my comfort zone. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The writer of the Proverbs places before us the good qualities of a faithful wife. She is not idle but industrious and enterprising. She cares for the needs of her family but also reaches out in love to the poor and needy. She fears the Lord. A man who finds a woman like her has found a great treasure. Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 10 When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. 11 Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. 12 She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. 13 She obtains wool and flax and works with loving hands. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. 20 She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. 30 Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her at the city gates. P S A L M Psalms 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 R: Blessed are those who fear the Lord. 1 Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! 2 For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; happy shall you be, and favored. (R) 3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. (R) 4 Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. 5 The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. (R) 2nd READING While the world is saying “peace and security,” suddenly and unexpectedly the Lord will return. He will come, for the unbeliever, like a thief in the night, but not for the Christian. We are, as St. Paul says, not of the darkness but children of the Light, so this day will not catch us unaware. 1Thessalonians 5:1-6 1 Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. 3 When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. 5 For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. 6 Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. G O S P E L The parable of the talents teaches us that God has entrusted us with different gifts and abilities, and we are expected to use them for His Kingdom and glory. If we hide our gifts or use them just for our own selfish gain, then we will be judged severely. The man with one talent hid his gift out of fear. He did not want to take a risk or exercise his faith and use the gift for the service of others. For this, the master condemned him and gave his talent to the man who had five already. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me bears much fruit. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 25:14-30 14 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one — to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately 16 the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. 17 Likewise, the one who received two made another two. 18 But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. 19 After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ 22 Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ 24 Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; 25 so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ 26 His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? 27 Should you not then have put my money in bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? 28 Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. 29 For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’” my reflections t h i n k : If we hide our gifts or use them just for our own selfish gain, then we will be judged severely. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Mark 13-16 SABBATH PAUSE My weekly time with God THANK YOU LIST Things to be grateful for from the past week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NEEDS Things to ask God for in the coming week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ HIDDEN TREASURE Most important word God told me this week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | TIME , TALENT AND TREASURE As we draw near the end of the year, the Church’s liturgy is focused upon the end times. Today, we hear about the steward’s talents, given and shared. Right from the start of the parable, Jesus tells us that the landowner gives each servant the funds according to their ability. The owner knows his men and in giving them the talents according to their ability, he expects that they will put their talents to good use. The first two are productive; the third is lazy with his talents. The term talent was equivalent to a weight measure of 75 pounds. Notice that the owner distributes the talents accordingly. Nowadays, the term talent is used to describe some kind of gift or ability. Talents or abilities are given to us, and it is up to us to use them well. The first two are reliable, productive, industrious and dependable. Lazy and wickeddescribe the third. God expects us to use our talents well, not to be lazy and wicked with what we have. The three Ts are very good for our meditation, namely, time, talent and treasure. How well do we use them? The servants were well rewarded in using their time, talent and treasure accordingly. The amount given them doubles as they prove to be trustworthy. The other had his talents taken from him and given to one who would use them more productively. God will deal with us accordingly. We must take every opportunity to use our time well. We have 24 hours in a day — how do we use it for God? What is our treasure? How well do we share our wealth? Do we hide it? What are our talents? How well do we use them for God, church and society? The measure with which we give is the measure by which we will be judged. Would it not be wonderful to hear the Lord say to us at the end of our life, “Well done, you shall share your Master’s joy”? So let us begin today by reflecting on our time, talents and treasure with firm resolve to use them accordingly. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: What are my time, talents and treasure? Do I use them well? Lord, You have truly blessed mewith time, talents and treasure. Help me to use them according to Your will. Amen.
