| FILE DELETED Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things... – Luke 19:45 A male officer in one of my previous employments was busy doing something on our department’s laptop. He was surrounded by our other office mates who were gawking at his monitor. I learned from my friend that they were watching an X-rated video, which came from an employee of another department and was stored in the hard disk of our laptop. I was scandalized with what I learned and resolved to do something about it. Since my friend was more knowledgeable about computers, I asked her to locate the X-rated file and delete it permanently. My friend borrowed the laptop from this male officer and got to work. Later, she informed me, “Mission accomplished.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus entered the temple area and drove out the merchants and money changers. He was angry at them because they made God’s temple a place of extortion, and thus it became a “barrier” or obstacle to Jews who wanted to worship. Jesus didn’t mind what other people would think or say of Him. He became angry but did not sin. His anger was directed toward the right issues — sin and injustice — and stood against them. We need to do the same. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com) 18 REFLECTION: Do you have the tendency to just “go with the flow,” not wanting to rock the boat? Lord, grant me the courage to go against the flow when the need arises. Be with me as I stand up for what is good, right and just. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Judas and his companions waged a war against Antiochus Epiphanes and eventually defeated him and his armies as God also fought with him to defeat this evil king. Having recaptured Jerusalem, they set about cleansing the sanctuary and restoring the sacrifices in the Temple. This was a time of great joy for all those who loved God and were faithful to the covenant. Let us, like Judas, have a great love for the Church and do all we can to make it a place worthy of God’s presence. 1 Maccabees 4:36-37, 52-59 (or Acts 28:11-16, 30-31) 36 Judas and his brothers said, “Now that our enemies have been crushed, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it.” 37 So the whole army assembled, and went up to Mount Zion. 52 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, that is, the month of Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-eight, 53 they arose and offered sacrifice according to the law on the new altar of burnt offering that they had made. 54 On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it, on that very day it was re-consecrated with songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals. 55 All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven, who had given them success. 56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar and joyfully offered holocausts and sacrifices of deliverance and praise. 57 They ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields; they repaired the gates and the priests’ chambers and furnished them with doors. 58 There was great joy among the people now that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed. 59 Then Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness on the anniversary every year for eight days, from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev. P S A L M 1 Chronicles 29:10, 11, 11-12, 12 (or Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6) R: We praise your glorious name, O mighty God. 10 “Blessed may you be, O LORD, God of Israel our father, from eternity to eternity.” (R) 11 “Yours, O LORD, are grandeur and power, majesty, splendor, and glory. For all in heaven and on earth is yours.” (R) “Yours, O LORD, is the sovereignty; you are exalted as head over all. 12 “Riches and honor are from you.” (R) “You have dominion over all. In your hand are power and might; it is yours to give grandeur and strength to all.” (R) G O S P E L Jesus had a great love and zeal for His Father and was angered to see how the Sadducees and rulers of Israel had turned the Temple into a place of commerce such that it was no longer a place conducive to prayer. He drives out all the money changers and animals. This causes the scribes and chief priests to hate Him even more as He has challenged their authority and exposed their corruption and abuse of the sacred things of God. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 19:45-48 (or Matthew 14:22-33) 45 Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.’ ” 47 And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, 48 but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words. my reflections t h i n k : Let us have a great love for the Church and do all we can to make it a place worthy of God’s presence. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Luke 17-20 Luke 17-20 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | CoME! A little more than a week ago, we celebrated the dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica. Today we celebrate the memorial of two basilicas in Rome — Sts. Peter and Paul. Both basilicas share the same date though one is slightly older than the other. The Basilica of St. Peter is on top of the tomb of St. Peter. He was crucified upside down during the great persecution in Rome under Emperor Nero, 64 A.D. The Basilica of St. Paul is on Via Ostia, outside the ancient city walls of Rome. Paul was beheaded with a sword, as the legend goes; his head bounced three times, hence the Tre Fontan (Three Fountains). The story narrated by Matthew is a delightful story of placing our trust in the Lord. The Apostles, caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, are struggling. Interestingly, the waters are the places whereby evil reign. It is no wonder that in their fright, the Apostles scream that the one walking on the water is a ghost. Immediately, Jesus calms their fears by calling out to them. As Peter begins to walk on the water, I guess the greatest mistake he made was to look down. The moment he perceived the wind, he became frightened and began to sink. From this account, we notice that the Lord is always willing to save. We just need to call upon His name and we shall be saved. Jesus always encourages us: Do not be afraid! Perhaps we are to take the risk, similar to Peter, to step out of the boat. The boat represents that comfort zone where we would rather stay because it is a shelter from the storm. In fact, Peter is the bravest of all the Apostles — perhaps the most stupid also! Yes, he takes the step of faith. He believes in Jesus. He is ready to follow the call of the Lord. Certainly, in our lives, the winds may become fierce and the storm so destructive, but the Lord is always ready to hasten to our aid. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Is Jesus calling you to step out of the boat? Faithful and kind God, I place my faith in You. Do not abandon me when I call upon Your name. Amen. St. Odo, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
