| Faith Forgives And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” – Luke 17:5 Do you know exactly when the apostles asked our Lord for an increase in faith? Right after Jesus taught them to forgive. “Even if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry’ you should forgive him” (Luke 17:4). I don’t know whether these two verses are directly related. But one thing’s for sure. You need extraordinary faith to forgive. Especially when someone does you wrong “regularly.” I know about justice. I believe in correcting someone who does wrong because as an educator, I know that discipline is vital to learning. But you don’t need to be a Christian to practice justice and discipline. Even the pagans do that. I believe that if there’s one thing that will set us apart as Christians it’s forgiveness. Justice — yes. Discipline — yes. But forgiveness — above all! Because forgiveness is the ultimate expression of love. Easy to say. Difficult to follow. Forgive people who wrong you? Seven times a day? Nonsense. Well, that’s why you need an increase of faith. Because with extra faith — and a mega dose of love — forgiveness may still not make sense. But it’s all worth it. Alvin Barcelona (kpreacheralvin@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Do you want to forgive someone but find it difficult to do? Ask an increase of faith from God now. And with that, forgive and follow Jesus! Dear Lord, grant me an increase in faith that I may forgive and be like You. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING This text from the Book of Wisdom gives the reader the basic principles that he must follow to discover God and have a relationship with Him. Just as one cannot have fellowship with darkness and light at the same time, neither can one participate in evil and injustice and expect to be close to God. Since God’s Spirit dwells in our inmost self, He knows all that goes on in our hearts. Wisdom 1:1-7 1 Love justice, you who judge the earth; think of the LORD in goodness, and seek him in integrity of heart; 2 because he is found by those who test him not, and he manifests himself to those who do not disbelieve him. 3 For perverse counsels separate a man from God, and his power, put to the proof, rebukes the foolhardy; 4 because into a soul that plots evil wisdom enters not, nor dwells she in a body under debt of sin. 5 For the Holy spirit of discipline flees deceit and withdraws from senseless counsels; and when injustice occurs it is rebuked. 6 For wisdom is a kindly spirit, yet she acquits not the blasphemer of his guilty lips; because God is the witness of his inmost self and the sure observer of his heart and the listener to his tongue. 7 For the spirit of the LORD fills the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says. P S A L M Psalms 139:1-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-10 R: Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way. 1 O LORD, you have probed me and you know me; 2 you know when I sit and when I stand; you understand my thoughts from afar. 3 My journeys and my rest you scrutinize, with all my ways you are familiar. (R) 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know the whole of it. 5 Behind me and before, you hem me in and rest your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; too lofty for me to attain. (R) 7 Where can I go from your spirit? From your presence where can I flee? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I sink to the nether world, you are present there. (R) 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, if I settle at the farthest limits of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall guide me, and your right hand hold me fast. (R) G O S P E L All of us have an impact on those around us depending on our behavior. If our actions are good and upright, then we will encourage goodness in others as well. But if we are involved in evil, we will weaken others in their effort to be good. We need therefore to be vigilant so as to always give a good example, both in word and in deed. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Shine like lights in the world, as you hold on to the word of life. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 17:1-6 1 Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the person through whom they occur. 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. 3 Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’ you should forgive him.” 5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6 The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” my reflections t h i n k : Just as one cannot have fellowship with darkness and light at the same time, neither can one participate in evil and injustice and expect to be close to God. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The WISDOM OF GOD Wisdom is often interchangeable with the Spirit. Jesus is wisdom personified. The author of wisdom is probably a sage or elder in the community and his words are worthy of our reflection. He admonishes us to love justice, think of the Lord in His goodness and seek Him. He understands that wisdom or spirit does not enter one who plots evil nor found in one indebted to sin. The author writes similarly to St. Paul, who wrote of the Spirit, many centuries later. Just as Paul recognizes the Spirit as a spirit of discipline, order and self-control, so too does the author here state that the spirit is not interested in those who practice deceit. Wisdom is a kindly spirit. Elsewhere, Paul writes that the Spirit knows the depths of God and intercedes accordingly. Here, the author tells us that God is the witness of the innermost being of man. He observes the heart and listens to the man of integrity. The author of Wisdom writes poetically. In his writings, we can understand certain qualities of wisdom. Let us pray for such a gift. Wisdom is the gift of the Holy Spirit that enables us to discern between right and wrong, good and evil. The Spirit fills the whole world, embraces fully the person docile to its action. For the Christian, wisdom is of utmost importance in our dealings with others. We must discern the will of God, in all events and circumstances life offers us. The one filled with wisdom will never experience the absence of the Lord for the Spirit is all-embracing and knows the mind of man. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Pray for the gift of wisdom in your life. Father of life, grant me the sevenfold gifts of Your Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. St. Hieron, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
