| Solemnity of Christ the King 20 RECALCULATING “ The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back…” – Ezekiel 34:15-16 It was our first time to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to help us navigate as we drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. My husband didn’t know how to use the handheld GPS but it was supposed to tell us where to go given the destination we typed in. For one hour we followed its voice commands until we realized that it was directing us through in-roads instead of the freeway. When we decided to ignore its instructions, it kept saying, “Recalculating,” as it plotted a new route to lead us to our destination. It was annoying! Days later, we learned that our GPS was set to pass only pedestrian lanes. (Pedestrian lanes from LA to LasVegas?!) When we finally used the right settings, it gave us directions with pinpoint accuracy and it became an indispensable tool! God gave us a GPS to guide us to our final destination: heaven. But often we don’t take the time to read the manual (the Bible) to make sure we’re on the right track. We listen to too many voices in the world telling us where to go instead of listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Jesus clearly said He is the Way; no one goes to the Father except through Him. If you are lost, reset and listen to the right voice. God always allows U-turns! Ronna Ledesma(ronnaledesma@email.com) REFLECTION: Are you lost? Just follow Jesus. He knows the way. Thank You, Jesus, for seeking me out when I was lost and for bringing me back to the right path. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Lord God promises through the prophet Ezekiel that as the shepherds of Israel have been unfaithful and neglected their duties to care for the sheep, God Himself will be their shepherd. This was fulfilled with the coming of Jesus who called Himself the Good Shepherd. In fact, the very words used in this text are also used to describe the ministry of Jesus — seek the lost, bring back the stray, bind up the injured and heal the sick. Let us confidently place ourselves in the loving care of the Good Shepherd. Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17 11 Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep. 12 As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. 15 I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD. 16 The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly. 17 As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. P S A L M Psalms 23:1-2, 2-3, 5, 6 R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 In verdant pastures he gives me repose. (R) Beside restful waters he leads me; 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. (R) 5 You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (R) 6 Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come. (R) 2nd READING St. Paul describes the ministry of Christ the Son, who is to rule over all things and then place them under His Father’s reign. As Jesus told His disciples, all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Him. As we proclaim the Good News, we advance the Kingdom of God on earth. Let us continue to work with our Lord for the final and complete coming of the Kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 20 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. 22 For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, 23 but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; 24 then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 28 When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all. G O S P E L This famous passage from Matthew’s Gospel reminds us of the importance of works of mercy in being accepted into the Kingdom of God. How we respond to the needs of the poor among us will largely determine how the Lord will judge us when He returns. Let us double our efforts to assist those who are in any need and not judge them for their conditions. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 25:31-46 31 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, 32 and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ 41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ 44 Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ 45 He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ 46 And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” my reflections t h i n k : How we respond to the needs of the poor among us will largely determine how the Lord will judge us when He returns. It was formerly on the last Sunday of October. After Vatican II, it was transferred to the Last Sunday in Ordinary Time. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast on December 11, 1925 to combat the rising secularism and atheistic communism so rampant at that time. He established this feast so that people might again turn to their King and their Lord — Jesus Christ. In the first reading, we hear of the call of the shepherd King who separates people as sheep and goats. The mixed flocks of sheep and goats were a common sight in Palestine. At night, the goats were inside since they preferred the warmth, whereas the sheep preferred the open air. Admired by their shepherds, the sheep are given preferential treatment, hence the Gospel of the sheep and goats. In this Gospel, we read about the sin of omission. At the Last Judgment, we will not only be judged by our actions, good or evil. We will also be judged on our failure to do good when the need arises in our lives. Mother Teresa of Calcutta would teach her sisters the “Gospel on five fingers,” as she would count on the fingers of her hand the words of Matthew 25:40, “You did it to me.” Did we see and help the Christ among us or did we reject them? How often in a day do we reject or accept Christ among us? Once, Jesus said to the disciples as the woman washed His feet, you will always have the poor among you. Every day we have an opportunity to visit the sick, visit the lonely prisoners, feed the hungry, quench the thirsty and clothe the naked. Christ is on our doorstep every day. Are we able to recognize Him? Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Reflect on the words “you did it to me.” Lord, help me clothe the naked, feed the hungry, comfort the sick, visit the lonely and satisfy the thirsty. Amen. St. Edmund Rich, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
