| MEET LALING, A SERVANT “We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” – Luke 17: 10 We treat our maids like they were members of our family. We always ask them to join us at table during meal time. But one time, we had Laling (not her real name). She would not join us during meal times. She said she would eat after we finished eating. We were not comfortable about that. My husband, particularly, thinks it’s unethical to serve leftover food to anyone. So, we had a better arrangement: Laling ate ahead of us. As I reflect on today’s Gospel, I surmise there are different meanings of the word servant. Laling might have belonged to that generation who thought maids should be, well, slaves — meant to do whatever their masters commanded them to do. In my prayer community, we work in various ministries and call ourselves servants. But we are not like our household helpers who work because they need the salary. What we need is to express our love for God, and how do we do this? We take the position of servants ready to do what God, Our Master, wants us to do. After all, rather than be a Master, He said He came to serve us. Yes, after all, He is our Head Servant. Cynthia Santiago (boses2go@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Who do you serve? Lord, purify my motives in working for You. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Here, the writer unfolds the reason for Satan’s attack on Eve. He was jealous of her and Adam’s place in the plan of God. Yet it also reveals the true glory and dignity that we share as God’s children. We are very precious to Him and He has put us in the palm of His hands. Although we may be tried in the furnace of persecution, God makes sure that we emerge more glorious by our trials. Wisdom 2:23-3:9 23 God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. 24 But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it. 3: 1 But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. 2 They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction 3 and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. 4 For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; 5 chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. 6 As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. 7 In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; 8 they shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the LORD shall be their King forever. 9 Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with the elect. P S A L M Psalms 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19 R: I will bless the Lord at all times. 1 [2] I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. 2 [3] Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad. (R) 15 [16] The LORD has eyes for the just, and ears for their cry. 16 [17] The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth. (R) 17 [18] When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. 18 [19] The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. (R) G O S P E L Sometimes we may think that when we go to Mass, keep the commandments and pray, we are already doing something extraordinary and that God should be very pleased with us. Jesus reveals here that if we do these things, we are only doing our duty, or what is expected of us, and nothing extraordinary. Since we owe everything to God, we can ultimately give Him back nothing that is not His, and our little efforts hardly free us from our huge debt of gratitude for all that He has done for us. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 17:7-10 7 Jesus said to the Apostles: “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? 8 Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? 9 Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’ ” my reflections t h i n k : Although we may be tried in the furnace of persecution, God makes sure that we emerge more glorious by our trials. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Matthew 21-24 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WE BELONG TO GOD Our lives belong to God. He made us and we are His own. We are the sheep, the flock led by His hand (Psalm 95). The author of Wisdom tells us that our lives are imperishable. Ever since the creation of the world, we are meant to be. The image of God sealed within us, through the Holy Spirit, and marks us for God’s ownership over us. In the love of God, we are created for God’s purpose. Death has entered the world through the disobedience of man who was tempted by the envy of the devil. However, even though death has come upon us, it is not the end of the story. We are meant to be for God eternally and the faithful shall abide with Him forever. The reading informs us of our life in God, despite the influence that evil has upon us in the world. Life is a great gift that we must treasure. It is the gift of God given to us; what we do with it is our gift to God. Death is the just reward of our sins and must have its final say. Nevertheless, Jesus has the final word as He beckons us to the Father. Because grace and mercy are with His holy ones and His care is with the elect. As we move towards the end of another year in the season of the Church (32nd week of Ordinary Time), the readings are focused on the end times. Death must always be close to our minds as we vigilantly prepare for the time when we shall be gone from this earth. We live as though every day is to be our last. Quite a sober thought really. Are we living for God or for ourselves? Our life on earth is short. The first reading gives us a description of the saints in heaven. All of us are to be saints. Through their communion with us on earth, they are our hope and prayer. Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed. Now they are in perfect communion with the Father. Their lives, seen as sacrificial offering to God, has pleased the Father to give them His Kingdom. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: What is your priority in life? Loving Creator and God, You made me for Yourself. My heart is restless until it rests in You. Amen. St. Cybi, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
