| “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage.... Then the flood came and destroyed them all.” – Luke 17:26-27 The end of the world is something that I don’t reflect on. It scares me just to think that there is actually an end to all life. And what I fear even more is I don’t know when this is going to happen. Only God knows when He will put a period to the last sentence of this generation’s life story. Come to think of it, when I recall the devastation brought by calamities, the wars all over the world and the diseases that threaten us daily, I ask myself if our generation still deserves to live in the world we have abused and failed to love. God was justified in cleansing the world with the flood during Noah’s time and there’s no telling if He will choose to do it again. Maybe the old life has to end for new life to begin — a life that is lived in faithfulness to God’s design and will. Although I am powerless to stop the world’s demise, I realized I can trust God’s infallible wisdom and mercy to carry out His will for us. More than destruction, the second coming of Jesus will bring a new beginning, a new life and a new hope. I just pray that I will be prepared and worthy to witness His glorious revelation. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) 11 REFLECTION: “Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 7:16-17) Jesus, may You find me faithful and prepared when You come again in glory. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Here, the writer extols the wonder and beauty of wisdom — something that the ancients greatly admired and sought. In contrast, our modern world pursues knowledge and often fails to appreciate the value of the wisdom of the past, dismissing it as out of date and irrelevant. Wisdom 13:1-9 1 All men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan; 2 but either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water, or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods. 3 Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them. 4 Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them. 5 For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen. 6 But yet, for these the blame is less; for they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him. 7 For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair. 8 But again, not even these are pardonable. 9 For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its Lord? P S A L M Psalms 19:2-3, 4-5 R: The heavens proclaim the glory of God. 1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. (R) G O S P E L The Pharisees and people think that the Kingdom of God will be a military and earthly kingdom. Yet Jesus points out this is not the case. We do not need to go far in search of the Kingdom — it is right within us. It is the love of God dwelling in our hearts through the presence of the Holy Spirit. The more we grow in love, the more will God’s Kingdom reign within us. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 17:26-37 26 Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; 27 they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; 29 on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all. 30 So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, a person who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise a person in the field must not return to what was left behind. 32 Remember the wife of Lot. 33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. 34 I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. 35 And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” 36 37 They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.” my reflections t h i n k : We do not need to go far in search of the Kingdom — it is right within us. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Mark 5-8 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | ARE YOU READY OR NOT? Every Mass, we acclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The first two events have come and gone, the third has yet to be fulfilled. Some say that Jesus has already come by the coming down of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Others say He has come again at the Resurrection, or at the moment of the believer’s conversion. Jesus tells us that it will be noticeable to all. At least we have an idea when Jesus will come again when we do not expect it. We are to be watchful, ready and waiting. The Second Coming reminds me of the children’s game, hide and seek. One cries out, “Ready or not, here I come!” I suppose it will be like that when Jesus comes again. Are you ready… or not? In the Gospel, Jesus warns us of the suddenness of His coming. He cites two characters, Noah and Lot, as examples. Noah was a righteous man. God asked Noah to build an ark in preparation for the upcoming flood that would wipe out all of humanity. God was grieved at the wickedness of man. Some would be spared, such as Noah and his family. People were doing normal activities when the flood came unexpectedly. Lot was the nephew of Abraham. After the visitors came to his place, they warned Lot to escape the imminent destruction of the city of Sodom. At once, the whole city was destroyed. It was as sudden as a tropical storm that one experiences in the rainy season of the Philippines. The suddenness and unexpected arrival of the coming of the Son of man need not be a cause for alarm. We are to stand in firm confidence that Jesus is the Savior of the world. Therefore, we should take care of how we act. That’s why the daily examen is a good spiritual practice. It enables us to keep a check upon our life. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Are you ready? Maranatha. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
