We were getting dressed for a prayer meeting when the argument began. What it was about, I hardly remember. In the car, our heated debate became more intense. When we reached the parking lot of the prayer meeting, my wife’s eyes were so puffy from crying, she didn’t want anyone to see her. So we drove home with seething rage in our chest, feeling hurt and very silly. Imagine, we got dressed and drove for an hour, only to turn back and go home! When we returned, we continued talking passionately. But finally, after two more hours of arguing, we embraced each other. That, my friends, was our last big fight — and it happened many years ago. No, we’ve not been all lovey-dovey since then. Because my wife and I have little fights very often. But we have improved. We trained ourselves not to bottle little hurts or irritations. I tell her how she irks me, and she tells me how I offend her. So, my wife pouts her angry pout, and I frown my angry frown. After a minute or two, we’re hugging each other again. When we really are able to entrust our lives and concerns to the Lord, He gives us His peace. This is both something that we can feel in our hearts and a reality that we are not in enmity with God but reconciled to Him. Let us be people of peace, bringing the peace of Christ into our homes, families and work situations.   Isaiah 26:1-6 1 On that day they will sing this song in the land of Judah: “A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us. 2 Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith. 3 A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you.” 4 Trust in the LORD forever! (R)   G O S P E L   In a country that often experiences floods, the story of the house built on the rock that withstood the floods and winds is very pertinent. Although the foundations of a house are not visible, they are nevertheless very important for the safety and strength of the house. In a similar way, we must build our spiritual lives on rock, not on sand, so that when trials come we will stand firm and not collapse.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Seek the Lord while he may be found; call him while he is near. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”   my reflections think: We must build our spiritual lives on rock, not on sand, so that when trials come we will stand firm and not collapse.   God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________   _______________________________________________________   READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 Corinthians 1-4       Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top SABBATH   Marketplace Christianity   One time during Mass, the priest asked his congregation, “What is the most important place in the Church?” “The altar,” one answer came, “because that is where the bread and wine are consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ.” Another said, “The lectern, because that is where the Word is proclaimed and the homily is delivered.” After hearing other responses, the priest finally said, “Yes, the altar and the lectern are important but the most important part of the Church is the exit door.” A surprised silence followed. Then the priest continued, “The exit door is the most important because unless you live out what and who you have received in the Mass, everything will be in vain.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that “none of those who cry out, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” During that time, not everyone had access to the Scripture. The temple became the “official” place where people can call on the Lord and hear and read the Word of God. Jesus warns us against a religion where God only becomes Lord of our life in the temple, where God is glorified only inside and during worship done in Church. This is what I call a “Christianity of the sanctuary.” The Gospels do not picture Christ as always in the temple. You can actually count with your fingers the number of times Jesus was seen in the temple. Jesus did not come to inaugurate a Christianity of the sanctuary. He rather proposes a “marketplace Christianity.” This is why Jesus commissions us to be “salt of the earth and light of the world.” Commenting on the noticeable decline of Christians especially in Europe, Pope Benedict XVI commissioned them to be a “creative minority.” A minority that is powerful and effective as to effect a real transformation in society. The mission of the Church is not so much to put Christians in the Church but to put Christians outside of the Church. Fr. Joel O. My family was watching television one night when my dad noticed that something smelled odd. He turned to my mom and asked if she noticed it, too. They traced the odd smell to an infected ear lobe — mine! And it hurt like crazy because my earring was stuck underneath skin and pustule. With a first aid kit ready, my parents held me down, yanked out the earring and drained the infected ear lobe. Of course, I cried, kicked and screamed my lungs out through the process. But can you guess what I did immediately after my parents got the earring out? I asked, “When can I wear earrings again?” It’s amazing how quickly I recovered. But I believe God created us all this way — resilient to pain and able to bounce back from any trial. We just tend to forget as we get older. When we speak out our faith, it is confirmed and strengthened. So it is a good idea to have some key faith-building Scriptures written out on some cards or on our cell phones so that we can read and speak them out during the day. It is a great way to strengthen our faith and affirm our trust in God for His help and blessings.   Romans 10:9-18 9 Brothers and sisters: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 For the scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? (R)   G O S P E L   Today, we honor St. Andrew, the Apostle, who was the brother of Simon Peter. Like Peter, Andrew left his nets and boat and followed the Lord in a radical response of faith. He had no idea where Jesus was going to lead him, but he was drawn to Christ by a deep and abiding attraction that captured his whole heart and life. Let us follow as St. Andrew did, in a wholehearted and unconditional way, so that the Lord’s purpose for our lives will be fulfilled.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men. He is the brother of Simon, later named Peter. He was a fisherman like his brother and lived in Galilee. He was a disciple of John the Baptist. He brings the two fish to Jesus in response to Jesus’ challenge of feeding the multitudes. It is not hard to notice that Andrew is an evangelist. He is the one who leads Peter to Jesus. It was to Andrew that we owe the visitation of the Greeks. Some Greeks came to him to inquire about Jesus. Right from the start of Jesus’ public ministry, he had a glimpse of who He was. He was curious to know more about Jesus. Upon asking Jesus where He lived, Jesus invited him to come and see. Andrew and his companion stayed with Jesus for the rest of that day. Who knows what exchange went on in those hours? In today’s Gospel, we read that Jesus was watching them cast their nets before He called out to them. This watchful gaze of the Lord pierces the heart of men when they notice and hear Him calling them. What is amazing is their readiness in following Jesus. Perhaps in his heart Andrew knew it would only be a matter of time before the Lord would capture his heart. They left everything to follow Him. I would imagine that Andrew, touched by his first encounter with Jesus, would have found it easy to leave his nets to follow Jesus. The response of Andrew is an example for us. He left everything and followed the Lord. A simple fisherman, yet his heart was set upon the Lord and His call for his life. Too many times, we cast our nets into empty waters. Is the Lord calling you to cast a glance His way and follow Him? Maybe you are casting your net in the wrong direction. Ask the Lord and He will guide you in the right direction. My family was watching television one night when my dad noticed that something smelled odd. He turned to my mom and asked if she noticed it, too. They traced the odd smell to an infected ear lobe — mine! And it hurt like crazy because my earring was stuck underneath skin and pustule. With a first aid kit ready, my parents held me down, yanked out the earring and drained the infected ear lobe. Of course, I cried, kicked and screamed my lungs out through the process. But can you guess what I did immediately after my parents got the earring out? I asked, “When can I wear earrings again?” It’s amazing how quickly I recovered. But I believe God created us all this way — resilient to pain and able to bounce back from any trial. We just tend to forget as we get older. You created me strong and nothing can keep me down.     Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top COMPANION   1st READING   Isaiah prophesies about the coming Messiah — that He will have the fullness of the Holy Spirit dwelling upon Him to usher in a reign of justice and peace. The Jews interpreted this as an earthly and political kingdom, but Jesus revealed that it would be one of the heart and spirit. The same Holy Spirit that rested in fullness upon Jesus has also been given to us so that we can draw upon all the gifts and graces of the Spirit in our own lives.   Isaiah 11:1-10 1 On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. 2 The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, 3 and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, 4 but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. 5 Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. 6 Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. 7 The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. 8 The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. 9 There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. 10 On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious.   P S A L M Psalms 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17 R: Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. 1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R)   G O S P E L   Jesus makes it very clear in this text that it is the Son who reveals to us the Father. In fact, we would not know God as a loving father apart from the revelation that comes to us through the passion and death of Christ. By giving us the Holy Spirit, we are given a share in Jesus’ Sonship with the Father and are able to cry out “Abba” (Father). This is a wonderful and precious gift that our faith gives us and that should give us a deep sense of security in God’s love and care for us.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Behold, our Lord shall come with power; he will enlighten the eyes of his servants. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 10:21-24 21 Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit because the will of the Father is being fulfilled in His very midst. There is a great sense of exultation and exuberant gratitude in Jesus’ prayer to the Father. The disciples have just returned from the various ministries. They are overwhelmed at the wonders and marvels of God. As they report all that has been accomplished, Jesus responds in joy. That which has been kept hidden from the wise and the clever is being revealed to mere children, those not so knowledgeable. This is Jesus’ joy! This is also our joy. We have been given the blessing of the knowledge of the Father. Jesus has chosen us to have this knowledge. Having made the public display of praise, He turns to His disciples in a very private way and proclaims their blessedness. They see and hear what the prophets of old have longed for — the coming of the Messiah. St. John of the Cross informs us that God has spoken one definitive word and that is Jesus the Word made Flesh. He has nothing more to say. The Church teaches us that Jesus is the revelation of the Father. He is the image of the invisible God — that is something to rejoice in. Jesus teaches us the will of the Father. He communicates the desires, hopes, plans and love of the Father. To see Jesus is to see the Father. In this time of Advent, let us imitate the joyous expression of Jesus. We are made co-sharers and co-workers in Jesus’ joy. Jesus has come into our midst to provide access to the Father. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Him, our hopes are restored and we find the true joy of salvation. In His name, we can rejoice because what has been hidden is now exposed and made clear to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our names are written in the book of Life. Fr.
