| WHO I AM Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister. – 1 John 3:10 Does God speak to you? He does to me. I mean not directly — not like He appears before me in all His glory. I wish! God speaks to me through His words, which come to me just when I need them. Like the reading today in the book of 1 John. For some time, I carried a grudge against a friend. I knew I should forgive but tried as I may, I just couldn’t go up to that level. Then, I received a call from Angie Espuerta, Didache’s editorial assistant. I had already submitted my assigned articles for 2012 but she requested me to rewrite my January 4 article. “You wrote about 1 John 3:16. You’re supposed to reflect on 1 John 3:7-10,” she said. So I quickly looked up the passage and… wham! I could almost hear God’s booming voice: “You’re my child. Do what is right. Love your friend!” All right, already. After I’m done with this reflection, I’m gonna forgive and reconcile with my friend. And I am going to post 1 John 3:7-10 on my desk — better yet, in my heart — so throughout 2012 and the rest of my life, I will be reminded of who I am. Cynthia Santiago (cusantiago@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Have you talked — and listened — to God lately? Lord, grant that I may always feel Your presence and always listen to You. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, religious, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING This letter shows the distinction between holiness and sinfulness. This is the choice before us all every day. We will not be able to live the truth fully unless we are aided by the Holy Spirit. The power and insistence of sin is so great that we will fall under its spell if we do not surrender our lives to the greater power of the Holy Spirit. 1 John 3:7-10 7 Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by God. 10 In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother. P S A L M Psalm 98:1, 7-8, 9 R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. 1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 7 Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it; 8 let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy before the Lord 9 The Lord comes, he comes to rule the earth; he will rule the world with justice and the peoples with equity. (R) GOSPEL Curiosity is a good thing if it leads us towards the truth and good and not in the ways of sin. We need to discern between the two paths – the path of good and the path of evil. There is no easy way to do this. We have to learn how to read the early signs of the path we have chosen so that we can get off it, if it is the wrong one, as early as possible. The longer we stay on the path of lies, the more seductive it will become. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets: in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son. John 1:35-42 35 John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” 37 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. 40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” which is translated Christ. 42 Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas,” which is translated Peter. READING 2nd READING TODAY’S LIST think: We will not be able to live truthfully unless we are aided by the Holy Spirit. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Matthew 10-12 BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | SHARING WHAT WE HAVE DISCOVERED “Behold the Lamb of God,” John the Baptist said to Andrew and another disciple of John when he brought them before the presence of Jesus. After hearing those words, they started to follow Jesus. Since Andrew began to follow Jesus, we see him doing some very interesting things as His disciple. In John 1:42, we find Andrew bringing his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, this after initially proclaiming to him that they have already found the Messiah. Next, we see him on top of a hill together with the other disciples. People were starting to mill around Jesus in hundreds and thousands. As it reached five thousand, not counting women and children, Jesus asked Philip, “Where are we to get food for all these people?” As Philip saw the impossibility of responding to the situation by saying, “Seven pounds worth of bread is not enough to give each of them a little to eat,” Andrew found a lad with five barley loaves and two fishes. Andrew brought the lad to Jesus (John 6:8-9), and the rest, as we say, is history. In John 12:20-22, we read, “There were certain Gentiles among those who went up so that they might worship on the feast day.” They went to Philip and requested that they be allowed to see Jesus. Philip relayed the request to Andrew and the two of them brought the Greeks’ request to Jesus. We see in Andrew the enthusiasm of a man who has discovered something or someone so great that he cannot just keep it to himself. And so, he brings people to Jesus and shares Him with them. Here lies the greatness of this disciple who found perfect fulfillment by bringing people to the One whom he has discovered, the One he serves. That should also mark our own discipleship. We should not keep to ourselves the joy that we have in finding Christ. We need to bring more people to Him so that they, too, would discover what we have come to see as we “behold the Lamb of God.”Fr. Sandy V. Enhaynes REFLECTION QUESTION: Identify at least five people whom you want to bring to Jesus. Start praying for their openness to receive Jesus and for your courage to share Him with them. Lord Jesus, accompany me with Your Holy Spirit as I try to share You with others. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
