| LOVING HOME “Look, we are your own flesh and bone.” – 2 Samuel 5:1 “Sometimes, parents have no idea about the damage that they do to their children,” my good friend said. We were sharing the common problems we had in our relationships. Both our partners have similar histories: they come from disharmonious homes and lacked affirmations while growing up. Not surprisingly, they have similar problems now that they’re adults: irascible temper, low self-esteem and a propensity for depression. My friend and I know how difficult it is to counter the damage born out of years of growing up in an unhappy home. But we both know we can survive it, because each experienced a happy childhood within a loving family. Mother Teresa said, “There is much suffering because there is so very little love in homes and in family life. We have no time for our children, we have no time for each other; there is no time to enjoy each other. In the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.” Let’s learn to value our family. Spend time with your children. Forgive your parents. Show concern for your siblings. By uniting our families, we begin to unite the world. Cecil Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.” (Mother Teresa) Lord, grant that love will prove mightier than all the trials through which our families will pass. Blessed Mother Marianne Cope, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING It is evident that the people of Israel are aware of David’s character; they have seen it in the way that he has conducted himself in battle – in the service of nation and king. They are united in their acclaim that he succeeds Saul. This is why it is important that we live unimpeachable lives. They will demonstrate to others the truth of the Gospel to which we have committed ourselves, and by virtue of this, call others to surrender to the Gospel. 2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10 1 All the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said: “Here we are, your bone and your flesh. 2 In days past, when Saul was our king, it was you who led the children of Israel out and brought them back. And the Lord said to you, ‘You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel.’ ” 3 When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron, King David made an agreement with them there before the Lord, and they anointed him king of Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years: 5 seven years and six months in Hebron over Judah, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem over all Israel and Judah. 6 Then the king and his men set out for Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the region. David was told, “You cannot enter here: the blind and the lame will drive you away!” which was their way of saying, “David cannot enter here.” 7 But David did take the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David. 10 David grew steadily more powerful, for the Lord of hosts was with him. P S A L M Psalm 89:20, 21-22, 25-26 R: My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him. 19 [20] Once you spoke in a vision, and to your faithful ones you said: “On a champion I have placed a crown; over the people I have set a youth.” (R) 20 [21] “I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, 21 [22] That my hand may be always with him, and that my arm may make him strong.” (R) 24 [25] My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him, and through my name shall his horn be exalted. 25 [26] I will set his hand upon the sea, his right hand upon the rivers.” (R) GOSPEL We are in a battle with Satan. But we do not have to fear defeat as Jesus has already won the battle. This is one of the most important truths we have to learn to live in our lives; it is the secret to overcoming sin, namely that the battle is already won. What we have to realize is that we do not have to overcome Satan in our own strength – Jesus has done it for us. Let us reflect upon this truth until it is seared into our minds and hearts. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel. Mark 3:22-30 22 The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.” 23 Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house. 28 Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” 30 For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” LIST think: We are in the battle with Satan. But we do not have to fear defeat as Jesus has already won the battle. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR John 4-6 4-6 TODAY’S BLESSING LIST 1st READING 2nd READING GOSPEL PSALM TODAY’S BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | DAVID IS CROWNED KING OF ISRAEL David receives the crown of the nation of Judah and, seven years later, Israel as well. He unites the Jewish people once again. As their king, he expands the borders of the nation and creates a great military power feared in the region, triumphant against all enemies. It is under him that Israel reaches the zenith of its power, and it is to the Kingdom of David that future generations will look to for inspiration in times of hardship. It is easy to live in the past and exult in the glories of days gone by, but this will not secure one’s future. In the same way we can dwell on the failures and defeats of the past, but this, too, will not secure the future. We must live in the present — both for the present and the future. If we do this, our legacy will be secure. The past glory of a nation will not ensure anything for the future. However, foundations of truth and righteousness laid today will make possible a future greatness. Too often we forget that success is built on faithfulness to the fundamentals and, when it comes to our faith, this can be summed up in one idea: obedience to the will of God. Jesus constantly affirms that this is the basis of His ministry – doing what the Father tells Him to do, obeying His will. Let us all seek to imitate Jesus and follow His example of submission and obedience. In this way we will contribute to the building of His Kingdom and thereby live fulfilled and holy lives. David was not perfect — he failed many times, but he always accepted the forgiveness God offered him and got back to work! Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Do you lose heart when you sin or when things do not go as you expect them? Do you give in to temptation and disappointment too easily? Jesus, help me to focus my life on imitating Your obedience and so come to know the only path that will bring me fulfillment in my life. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
