| Little by Little “Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” – 1 John 5:5 When 2011 was about to roll in, one of the news channels featured a scene in a market. The camera zoomed in on a buyer in the midst of various good luck charms. The buyer said, “Pampa-suwerte ito. Wala namang mawawala kung gagawin mo rin ‘to, di ba?” (This is for good luck. You won’t lose anything if you also do this, right?) When a new year comes in, many line up, haggle and even quarrel just to get the right quantity of round fruits as well as the new year’s lucky animal. Do we lose anything when we buy good luck charms and round fruits? Wikipedia writes, “God is most often conceived of as the supernatural creator and overseer of the universe.” So to the extent that we believe in lucky charms and other things that will bring us a better life, so we also lose — little by little — our wholehearted faith in God and His power over us. It may not seem so, yet looking deeper, we allow ourselves room for other “gods.” As Christians, we should be moving towards greater faith little by little, not eroding it. And I think that’s a good new year’s resolution. Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com) REFLECTION: How can I exercise my faith for it to grow? In what daily events can I exercise it? Forgive me, Lord, for not trusting You enough. Enable me to grow closer to You. St. Andre Bessette, religious, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Yes, we have to overcome the world! I say this in a spirit of revolution and as a call to arms. I do not mean a war with guns but a war between righteousness and sin. It is this battle that defines our Christian communities and the world today. Yes, aspects of society are fully supported by the Gospel, but there are other aspects that are not. We need to fight so that life from conception may be respected. We need to fight against euthanasia and the death penalty. These and many other battles await us. 1 John 5:5-13 5 Beloved: Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came through water and Blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and Blood. The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth. 7 So there are three that testify, 8 the Spirit, the water, and the Blood, and the three are of one accord. 9 If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God. P S A L M Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20 R: Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. 12 Glorify the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. 13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children within you. (R) 14 He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills you. 15 He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word! (R) 19 He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel. 20 He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia. GOSPEL The genealogy of Jesus serves to identify His messianic origins and affirm His humanity. It is in His humanity that Jesus can save us. Apart from Jesus being human, it is hard for us to believe that Jesus understands our struggle to do good and avoid evil. Jesus identifies with us in His humanity and so is able to redeem us through His example of obedience and love. Let us seek to follow His example. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Mark 1:7-11 (or Luke 3:23-38) 7 This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. 11 And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” READING 2nd READING TODAY’S BLESSING LIST think: Jesus identifies with us in His humanity and so is able to redeem us through His example of obedience and love. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Matthew 16-18 BLESSING LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE MEANING OF JESUS’ BAPTISM John the Baptist’s testimony about himself (John 1:19-28) presents some remarkable facts about how baptism is understood during the time of Jesus. The line of questioning in those verses reveals how the Jews understood who can only administer baptism: the Messiah, Elijah or any of the prophets. Granting that he was given the freedom to exercise such “ministry” unopposed (by the religious powers that be), why did John the Baptist baptize Jews knowing fully well that such practice was exclusively administered to “converts” (Gentiles converting to the faith)? Jews already belong to God and so they did not need to be “cleansed.” Gentiles had to be immersed in water through baptism if they are to belong to the chosen ones of God. Astounding! But what is even more remarkable is Jesus’ decision to submit Himself to this baptism. Jesus is a Jew. As the unblemished One, He has no sins to repent of. That baptism was unnecessary as far as Jesus, the only begotten Son of God (thus, the sinless one) and Son of Mary (thus, a Jew) is concerned. His baptism, therefore, should be understood in a different light. For Jesus it was a baptism that ushered in His public ministry. It was His commencement exercise. After that He would go full blast in attending to the affairs of His Father. By virtue of His baptism, man is able to begin his ascent to God. And Jesus, being true man, identifies with man in this journey of turning away from sin and turning to God. His baptism introduced Him to the ones He would save. Just as His Father laid claim on Him, His real identity was revealed as the Father’s “beloved Son on whom He was well pleased.” Because of that baptism, we now fully see how God marvellously commenced His redemptive work for man — how He, the Emmanuel, is truly with us in our journey towards the Father and how we are to accept our Lord who has been revealed to us, no less, by His and our Father. Fr. Sandy V. Enhaynes REFLECTION QUESTION: Now that you know what Jesus’ baptism really means, do you accept and trust that He is with you in your journey to the Father? Thank You, Lord Jesus, for becoming man and identifying with us so that we may be saved. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
