DIDACHE

PROCLAIM IT!

Then he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything…” – Mark 1:44

Jesus told him not to tell anybody, but he went on and spread the word about the man who cured him. Well, why not? Good news must be shared, right? Little did the former leper know that what he did would cause some trouble, because Jesus could no longer enter a town openly after that.
We, however, have been told to proclaim God’s goodness. Have we done so? Maybe we haven’t received a miracle as grand as the leper’s healing but surely there are numerous small wonders in our day that we can speak of.
“I can just keep it to myself and simply thank God for it,” some would reason. But I have learned to brag about how good the Lord has been to me. Yes, you read that right. I said brag. I proudly share my stories of His goodness with friends and family because after all the bad things I had done in the past, He still blesses me with wonderful things. I want everyone to know how His love turned my life around.
Count the little miracles you receive daily, and proclaim it! You may just help change someone’s life. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you brave enough to proclaim the Good News?

Lord Jesus, set my heart aflame that I may freely proclaim to the world how good You are.

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, virgin, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

We have to fight many battles as we become disciples of Jesus. Some of them we will win and others we will lose for various reasons. What is critical here is that we learn from our defeats and make sure that we do not keep repeating the same old mistakes. The only real bad mistake is the one that we do not learn from. This is something I often heard as a child – and it is true!

1 Samuel 4:1-11
1 The Philistines gathered for an attack on Israel. Israel went out to engage them in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek. 2 The Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel. After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield. 3 When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the Lord from Shiloh that it may go into battle among us and save us from the grasp of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the Lord of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God. 5 When the ark of the Lord arrived in the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded. 6 The Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked, “What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” On learning that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were frightened. They said, “Gods have come to their camp.” They said also, “Woe to us! This has never happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty Gods? These are the Gods that struck the Egyptians with various plagues and with pestilence. 9 Take courage and be manly, Philistines; otherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they were your slaves. So fight manfully!” 10 The Philistines fought and Israel was defeated; every man fled to his own tent. It was a disastrous defeat, in which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were among the dead.

P S A L M

Psalm 44:10-11, 14-15, 24-25
R: Redeem us, Lord, because of your mercy.
9 [10] Yet now you have cast us off and put us in disgrace, and you go not forth with our armies. 10 [11] You have let us be driven back by our foes; those who hated us plundered us at will. (R) 13 [14] You made us the reproach of our neighbors, the mockery and the scorn of those around us. 14 [15] You made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. (R) 24 [25] Why do you hide your face, forgetting our woe and our oppression? 25 [26] For our souls are bowed down to the dust, our bodies are pressed to the earth. (R)

GOSPEL

How could Jesus expect the man not to talk about his having been healed of leprosy? Jesus must have known he would tell everyone willing to listen about the miracle. The same should be true of us regarding the Gospel. We have been healed of our sin – forgiven and given another chance. This is far more important than being healed of leprosy. We should proclaim our faith from the rooftops to all who want to hear the Good News of salvation.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom and cured every disease among the people.

Mark 1:40-45
40 A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” 42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. 43 Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. 44 Then he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” 45 The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

SABBATH

TOUCH MY LIFE, LORD

The leper we hear about in the Gospel today inspires me. He has great courage to seek the Lord. He is a leper, an outcast. If he comes in contact with people, he not only places himself at risk; he sets others at risk. This was strongly condemned by law such that no leper must be in contact with anyone. What a lonely and isolated life a leper has.
But this leper in today’s reading is certainly a courageous person. He goes to Jesus, begging Him to heal him and set him free from his misery. What courage, what faith, what audacity!
Of course, Jesus heals. He wants to heal. He is compassionate, sympathetic and merciful. The leper is healed immediately. He is asked to remain silent about this and go and fulfill the requirements of the law. How can he keep quiet? His life is never the same, completely free from this skin condition, and reinstated into society. Consequently, everyone knows about this and Jesus has trouble with publicity. He stays in places where nobody lived.
All of us are, in one way or another, like this leper. Perhaps we don’t have the physical condition of leprosy, but by virtue of our sinfulness we are lepers. We were isolated and outcasts of God. However, God, in His graciousness and benevolent love, has freed us from the “leprosy of sin.” He has stretched out His hand to save us. What a beautiful image this is — God stretching out His hand to save us. God stretched out His hand through Moses over the Red Sea. Jesus stretched out His hand to save Peter from drowning. He stretched out His hands to indicate His disciples. And He stretched out His hands on the Cross and gives us life and freedom.
“Be made clean!” The words spoken to the leper can ring in our ears, too. Jesus stretches out His hand to you in your need for love, mercy, comfort or guidance. See Him stretching out His hand and take hold of it. Grasp it with all your strength and never let it go. The hand of God is never too short to save us. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTION: What leprosy of sin and evil do you need the Lord to heal you of? Ask Him to stretch out His hand in your life.

Lord Jesus, in Your compassion, heal me and forgive my sins. Amen.
