| VICTORY OVER THE TRIPLE D “How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war have perished!” – 2 Samuel 1:27 My grandma Cianing would tell me stories about how they fled their home and lived in the caves, subsisted on crocodile meat and prayed fervently that they be spared from the bayonets of Japanese soldiers. My grandma survived and has lived to see her 100th birthday yet memories of the war remain with her. I believe no one wins in a war, no matter how noble the intention is for going into battle. The suffering doesn’t stop in the battlefield but ripples out towards the families of fallen soldiers and innocent people caught in the crossfire. The agony continues to linger for years, even throughout generations, after the war has ended to haunt the survivors and those left behind by the dead. Destruction, devastation, death — these are the triple Ds that war brings. But I believe that in our small way, fervent prayer, fasting and being at peace with ourselves and others will help end all wars. The Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, has won the victory over the triple D by His death on the Cross. And in His perfect time the day will come when warmongers will be transformed into peacemakers and will inherit not only the earth but everlasting peace. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) 21 REFLECTION: How do I help bring peace into my home, in my country and in the world? Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light, where there is sadness, joy. He is stricken by both their deaths. David’s respect for Saul is derived directly from his respect for God. David believed that God had anointed Saul as king and thus respect was due Saul, even though Saul had declared David his enemy. We should learn about the respect we owe those who have been given authority over us. While we do not have to accept their sins, we should always respect the office they have as it has been given to them by none other than God. 2 Samuel 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27 1 David returned from his defeat of the Amalekites and spent two days in Ziklag. 2 On the third day a man came from Saul’s camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. Going to David, he fell to the ground in homage. 3 David asked him, “Where do you come from?” He replied, “I have escaped from the camp of the children of Israel.” 4 “Tell me what happened,” David bade him. He answered that the soldiers had fled the battle and that many of them had fallen and were dead, among them Saul and his son Jonathan. 11 David seized his garments and rent them, and all the men who were with him did likewise. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the soldiers of the Lord of the clans of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 19 “Alas! the glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights; how can the warriors have fallen! 23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and cherished, separated neither in life nor in death, swifter than eagles, stronger than lions! 24 Women of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and in finery, who decked your attire with ornaments of gold. 25 “How can the warriors have fallen — in the thick of the battle, slain upon your heights! 26 “ I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother! Most dear have you been to me; more precious have I held love for you than love for women. 27 “How can the warriors have fallen, the weapons of war have perished!” P S A L M Psalm 80:2-3, 5-7 R: Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved. 2 O shepherd of Israel, hearken, O guide of the flock of Joseph! From your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth 3 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. Rouse your power, and come to save us. (R) 5 O Lord of hosts, how long will you burn with anger while your people pray? 6 You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in ample measure. 7 You have left us to be fought over by our neighbors, and our enemies mock us. (R) GOSPEL It must have been hard for the relatives of Jesus to come to terms with His popularity and His following. Remember, they have grown up with Him and known Him through and through. I think it is relatively easy to see how they might think His fame has gone to His head, at least initially. Hopefully, after a while, they, too, will come to realize that He is all that He says He is in terms of the Gospel. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son. Mark 3:20-21 20 Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. 21 When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” SSING LIST think: We should learn about the respect we owe those who have been given authority over us. 1st READING 2nd READING T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Luke 22-24 BLESSING LIST LIST | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE SPIRITUAL REVOLUTIONARY One of the most amazing aspects of the ministry of Jesus was the way the Jews failed to recognize that He was the Messiah that all had been waiting for. Perhaps even more amazingly, we hear today in the Gospel that Jesus’ own relatives thought He was out of His mind. I wonder how they came to that conclusion, but then, it is very easy in hindsight to understand the ministry of Jesus. It would have been much more difficult to do so in the heat of the moment. It may help us to suspend our own faith for a bit and try to put ourselves in the shoes of those who first heard the Gospel as it was proclaimed by Jesus. There is no doubt that I would have struggled to understand and accept what Jesus was saying, as it was not supported by the teaching of the various rabbis at the time. I often come to the conclusion that this is why the ministry of Jesus had to be accompanied by so many miracles and signs. They were necessary in order to demonstrate that Jesus spoke with authority — namely, the voice of God. It is easy to see how radical Jesus’ message must have been to the ordinary believer of His time. Thus, the difficulty for the Gospel to be established among the Jews. There would not have been the same apprehension or hesitation among Gentile believers as they do not carry the same centuries-old traditions and understandings that the Jews had developed. It was all new to the Gentiles. Once this fact was overcome, virtually anything Jesus, or later on His disciples, say would be far more readily acceptable to their unformed and unbiased minds and hearts. If we allow our faith to guide our understanding of Jesus’ words, we will be led to a deeper appreciation of how significant and radical they would have been to the Jews of Jesus’ time. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL REFLECTION QUESTION: Do you allow prejudices to color the way you interpret the Scriptures? Try reading the Bible from the point of view of a Jew of Jesus’ time. Holy Spirit, help me to open my mind and my heart to the truth of the Gospel and to apply these truths in my daily life with fidelity and obedience to Your will. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
