| PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS “So you must obey and follow everything they tell you to do; do not, however, imitate their actions, because they don’t practice what they preach.” – Matthew 23:3 It is said that a priest touches the lives of a minimum of 5,000 people in his lifetime. What a sacred duty and an awesome responsibility to be the Lord’s messenger of His great love and mercy to his people. One parish priest wisely said that “a holy priest would mean a holy community” and earnestly asked to “please pray for us.” Being human themselves, we know that our priests today are subjected to many temptations, perhaps even more than the ordinary person will experience in his life. It is our duty to pray for them that they may remain steadfast and true to their calling, to bring us to God and not lead us astray. Instead of spreading gossip and scandals, we must turn to heaven and earnestly pray to the Father and Teacher of us all, that they may have the strength and grace to be faithful to their King.Marjorie Duterte (marjorie.travels@gmail.com) 30 REFLECTION: Remember your parish priest today. Offer a prayer on his behalf. Father, be close to our priests today as You were to the apostles of old. Pour Your holiness upon them that they may always be true to You, priests after Your own heart. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING God speaks through Prophet Malachi, to the priests who had not been faithful to the covenant and who had taught the people false doctrines. Since priests are entrusted by God to be the teachers and shepherd of His people, they have a solemn obligation to fulfill this sacred mission with all integrity and faithfulness. When priests do not reverence the things of God and begin to teach false doctrines, they lose the respect of the people and undermine their own authority. Malachi 1:14-2:2, 8-10 14 A great King am I, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations. 2: 1 And now, O priests, this commandment is for you: If you do not listen, 2 and if you do not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, I will send a curse upon you and of your blessing I will make a curse. 8 You have turned aside from the way, and have caused many to falter by your instruction; you have made void the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts. 9 I, therefore, have made you contemptible and base before all the people, since you do not keep my ways, but show partiality in your decisions. 10 Have we not all the one Father? Has not the one God created us? Why then do we break faith with each other, violating the covenant of our fathers? P S A L M Psalms 131:1, 2, 3 R: In you, Lord, I have found my peace. 1 O LORD, my heart is not proud, nor are my eyes haughty; I busy not myself with great things, nor with things too sublime for me. (R) 2 Nay rather, I have stilled and quieted my soul like a weaned child. Like a weaned child on its mother’s lap, so is my soul within me. (R) 3 O Israel, hope in the LORD, both now and forever. (R) 2nd READING In contrast to the false priests that Malachi spoke against, we see here the ministry of a faithful priest, the Apostle Paul. We see in St. Paul an example of selfless and diligent pastoral ministry in which he served the people and tenderly cared for them like a mother cares for her child. He did not even expect any payment for his services but worked with his own hands to support himself while ministering. Because of this loving and maternal ministry, the people revered Paul and his message as one from God Himself. 1 Thessalonians 2:7-9, 13 7 Brothers and sisters: We were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children. 8 With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us. 9 You recall, brothers and sisters, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 13 And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that, in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe. G O S P E L While Jesus respected the authority of the teachers of the law, He was critical of their lives, which did not reflect what they were teaching. Jesus did not want His followers to seek honors and preferential treatment that would elevate them above the ordinary people, but to be as servants just as He said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to lay down his life for the people.” ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia You have but one Father in heaven and one master, the Christ. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 23:1-12 1 Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. 3 Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. 4 They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. 5 All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. 6 They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, 7 greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’ 8 As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’ You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. 10 Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Christ. 11 The greatest among you must be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” my reflections t h i n k : Jesus did not want His followers to seek honors and preferential treatment that would elevate them above the ordinary people. For example, since Jesus said, “You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven,” some claim that priests should not be called “Father.” As usual, Jesus teaches in a typical Jewish way, exaggerating a point to get the message through to His audience. What He wants to say is that God is our real Father, more powerful, more loving, more caring, more compassionate than our earthly fathers can ever be. Ultimately, it is from this heavenly Father that we receive our life and everything we have and are. In a way, Jesus points back to the Ten Commandments where the first commandment stresses God’s uniqueness and superiority, while it is only in the fourth commandment that we are told to honor our father and mother. We have to get our priorities right and never ever put anything or anybody before God whom we are called to love with all our heart, mind and soul. God must remain the center of our lives — something we easily forget. Of course, it is easier to focus on and love our physical parents whom we see, hear and with whom we live since our birth. After all, we have not seen our heavenly Father; we have not heard directly His voice; we know Him only through the words of Jesus which we find in the Bible. Even though we pray countless times, “Our Father in Heaven,” it often is just a formula we recite without thinking what it actually means. Too often we pray, “Our Father in Heaven,” but do not behave like His children. And yet, this heavenly Father is our origin and destination. From Him we come, to Him we go. Our physical fathers will probably not be with us until the end of our life. But our heavenly Father remains with us and will be with us for all eternity. Isn’t that reason enough to honor and love our heavenly Father more? Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Do I have a devotion to God the Father? Who is God the Father to me? Lord, thank You for directing my attention more on Your and our Father in Heaven. I pray to You, to Mary and to the saints but forget to pray to God the Father. Even during Mass, I pray to You and do not realize that practically all prayers are addressed to Your Father. Thank You for the reminder. St. Herbert, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
