| MY RIGHT, MY RESPONSIBILITY The Lord replied, “What right do you have to be angry?” – Jonah 4:4 Ever since I got conscious of the effects of man-initiated activities to the environment and experiencing the effects of climate change, I felt frustrated that the authorities are not making it their top priority to implement eco-friendly practices in their respective constituency. I can fill this entire page of all the things that I think they should look into and those are only the environmental issues! Don’t get me wrong. This is not about my political views but of my realization that I‘ve been caught up with the large-scale issues, forgetting that I am part of the problem. While I push for awareness on global warming, I’d still print out documents when I can read them online. Or I use more paper napkins than needed at restaurants. With these realizations, I began to question my criticisms, not only regarding environmental issues but how I perceive the goings-on around me. I realized that while I have the right to be frustrated and angry at the system, I have the responsibility for doing my bit. Not because the system is not capable of doing it but because I know I am capable of making a difference. Mae Ignacio (maemi04@aim.com) 5 REFLECTION: Know your rights and, most importantly, know the responsibilities that go with those rights. Father, help me uphold my rights and constantly remind me that I have responsibilities to fulfill. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING No ministry has been as effective as that of Jonah. With his preaching, the whole city of Nineveh repented and was saved. Yet Jonah was not happy. In fact, he was very angry with God for showing mercy to the enemy of Israel. He wanted God to punish them, not forgive them. We, too, may have similar feelings towards those who have wronged us. We, too, like Jonah, want God to punish them. It may be hard to accept that God will show them mercy, yet we want God to always be merciful to us. Jonah 4:1-11 1 Jonah was greatly displeasing and became angry that God did not carry out the evil he threatened against Nineveh. 2 He prayed, “I beseech you, LORD, is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I fled at first to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe to punish. 3 And now, LORD, please take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 But the LORD asked, “Have you reason to be angry?” 5 Jonah then left the city for a place to the east of it, where he built himself a hut and waited under it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city. 6 And when the LORD God provided a gourd plant, that grew up over Jonah’s head, giving shade that relieved him of any discomfort, Jonah was very happy over the plant. 7 But the next morning at dawn God sent a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered. 8 And when the sun arose, God sent a burning east wind; and the sun beat upon Jonah’s head till he became faint. Then he asked for death, saying, “I would be better off dead than alive.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Have you reason to be angry over the plant?” “I have reason to be angry,” Jonah answered, “angry enough to die.” 10 Then the LORD said, “You are concerned over the plant which cost you no labor and which you did not raise; it came up in one night and in one night it perished. 11 And should I not be concerned over Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot distinguish their right hand from their left, not to mention the many cattle?” P S A L M Psalms 86:3-4, 5-6, 9-10 R: Lord, you are merciful and gracious. 3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for to you I call all the day. 4 Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. (R) 5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in kindness to all who call upon you. 6 Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading. (R) 9 All the nations you have made shall come and worship you, O Lord, and glorify your name. 10 For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds; you alone are God. (R) G O S P E L Jesus spent a lot of time praying. Observing Jesus at prayer, the disciples are attracted to the wonder and beauty of His communion with God the Father. They ask Jesus to teach them to pray. The best example parents can give to their children is to be people who pray. As a child, every morning when I went to my parents’ bedroom, I would find my mother kneeling beside her bed in prayer. This was a better lesson than any Catechism class on prayer that I had. It showed me that prayer is very important and something we need to do every day. Daniel 1-3 ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia You have received a spirit of adoption as sons through which we cry: Abba! Father! R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 11:1-4 1 Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread 4 and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.” my reflections think: The best example parents can give to their children is to be people who pray. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Daniel 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The Jonah in Me One of my favorite books in the Old Testament is the Book of Jonah. Whenever I teach about the prophets, my students always love most my lecture about this strange Jonah. And so I don’t like to miss writing at least one reflection about him before the liturgy moves on tomorrow to another prophet. Jonah was sent to evil Nineveh to announce God’s punishment. In his righteousness, he wanted the city to be destroyed — and that by all means. But God, seeing the repentance of the people, from the king down to the animals, responds to this public outpouring of penance and decides to spare the city. Should Jonah not be happy? He should be but he was very angry, so angry that he wanted to die. Can a God be trusted who does not punish the evildoers? Can a God be trusted who sent him all the way to Nineveh to announce God’s judgment and then nothing happens? Jonah wanted God’s enemies destroyed, not saved. Before we shake our heads at such a strange prophet, let us look into the deepest recesses of our hearts and check whether there is not also a little Jonah lurking. Oh, how we speak of justice and God’s justice! God will reward the good and punish the bad people. That’s His justice. And so, when we encounter a person who has done something evil, especially to us, we easily say it’s karma, meaning that we are wishing somehow that God would punish that person. And when it does not happen? We cry out: Where is God’s justice? But God is not only just; He is also very merciful. Often God’s mercy is stronger than His justice. For God is love. We read in Scripture that God does not want the death of the sinner but that the sinner repents and live. Are we not sometimes so justice-oriented that we forget to be merciful? Instead of murmuring about karma, why don’t we fall on our knees and pray for the conversion of an evil person? Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Do I pray for people who have harmed me? Do I wish, deep in my heart, that God may punish them? Do I pray for them? Lord, thank You for this insight that You gave me through the prophet Jonah. Thank You for being so patient and merciful with me. Help me to be more merciful towards others. St. Flavia, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
