| Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist FOLLOW THE VOICE “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.” – Luke 10:4 Dr. Hook was a strict and demanding person. During one of the Voltes V team’s trainings, he taught them a new defense technique. It was so difficult that it pushed the team beyond their limits. Dr. Hook didn’t allow them to stop practicing until they got it perfectly. Steve, the leader of the Voltes team, resented the way Dr. Hook was running their training and their lives. He didn’t want to accept any more instructions from Dr. Hook. While flying their machines across the horizon, a Bozanian monster appeared, one they had defeated before. But this time it was faster and stronger. They couldn’t defeat it. Dr. Hook commanded them to apply the new technique but Steve refused. Later, when he realized that they were doomed, he abided. They were able to volt in and destroy the enemy. Jesus gave His disciples specific instructions when they were sent on their missions. In fulfilling ours, we must be open to receive new instructions. We may have succeeded in our previous missions using “old techniques” but we need to get ourselves “updated” if we are to win this spiritual battle. We need to follow the voice of the One who commissions us if we are to succeed. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Are you Mr. /Ms./ Mrs. Know-it-All? Help me, Lord, to realize and admit that I do not know everything. Grant me the grace to listen to others and try to see the wisdom behind their words. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING St. Luke, a Gentile convert, was one of St. Paul the Apostle’s travelling companions who stayed faithful to this call to serve the world even when others like Demas deserted Paul. To have a faithful friend like Luke is a wonderful gift from God and an inestimable treasure. Let us try to be faithful friends to others as St. Luke was. This is one of the greatest gifts we can offer to another. 2 Timothy 4:10-17 10 Beloved: Demas, enamored of the present world, deserted me and went to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Luke is the only one with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is helpful to me in the ministry. 12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, the papyrus rolls, and especially the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 You too be on guard against him, for he has strongly resisted our preaching. 16 At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. P S A L M Psalms 145:10-11, 12-13, 17-18 R: Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom. 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R) G O S P E L St. Luke records the sending out of the 72 disciples to the towns and villages that Jesus intended to visit. They were, in a sense, like John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus’ ministry. In sending out these disciples, we can see that the work of evangelization is reserved not just for the clergy and religious but for all baptized Christians. Let us ask the Lord to give us the boldness and faith to share the Good News with the people around us today. Micah 1-3 ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia I chose you from the world, to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 10:1-9 1 The Lord appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. 3 Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ 6 If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. 8 Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, 9 cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’” my reflections t h i n k : The work of evangelization is reserved not just for the clergy and religious but for all baptized Christians. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Micah 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | physician, evangelist and “painter” with words St. Luke left us with two books, his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. He dedicated both books to a certain Theophilus and they were written for Gentile Christians. St. Paul calls him the beloved physician. In many parts of the world, images of Mary are attributed to the brush of Luke. But he surely was not an artist who painted pictures with a brush; he was rather an artist who painted lovely scenes with his pen. His descriptions were so vivid that he inspired countless artists throughout the centuries to put on canvas the scenes he described. If we didn’t have Luke’s Gospel, we would not know anything about the Annunciation, the Visitation, the shepherds and angels at Bethlehem, the Presentation and the finding of the boy Jesus in the Temple. Without Luke’s Gospel, we would not know of the parables about the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. We would not know anything about the Pentecost and Mary’s presence during that event, about the conversion and journeys of St. Paul, and so on. Yes, we would not know so many details from the life of Jesus, Mary and the Apostles if we do not have Luke’s two books. The way he presents Jesus is also quite different from the way the other three evangelists do. Luke shows Jesus often in prayer. He describes Jesus as the divine physician, always merciful, compassionate, always reaching out to the marginalized in society, ready to forgive sins. No other evangelist mentions the Holy Spirit so often, guiding the early Christian communities and their leaders. If you want to know how Christianity developed in the first decades, read Luke’s Acts. When you are afraid to approach God because of your sins, read Luke’s Gospel. When you feel rejected, judged, even condemned by others, read Luke’s Gospel and approach through it the merciful Lord who in turn will reach out to you and encourage you. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Have I read Luke’s Gospel from the beginning to the end? Have I familiarized myself with the Acts of the Apostles? Lord, thank You for giving us St. Luke and his inspired writings. In his books I can meet You, hear You, and feel Your compassion and love for me, a sinner. Thank You for this gifted evangelist. St. Kevoca, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
