| Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary MY CAR AND A MIRACLE “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” – Luke 11:27 Praying the rosary has been my habit every time I go home from work. I needed the comfort of the rosary especially because I rode in an old, rickety company car. I used to hate it. It looked Christmassy because the car was red but the paint was peeling so the green base color of the vehicle showed. It was always summer inside because the aircon didn’t work. Oh, but the car gave me an alibi whenever I was late for work — because it often conked out in the middle of nowhere. I also had a company driver, so I really shouldn’t complain. But still, I’d pray the rosary in the car, asking Mary to intercede for my needs — including a better car. Then, I learned about today’s reading, that God blesses those who hear His Word and observe it. So, I obeyed God, being grateful in all circumstances — the car included— until I learned to love it, especially when I see long lines of people waiting for a ride home. As today’s reading promised, God eventually blessed my family through our son Paolo who bought us a new car. The first time I rode in the car, I noticed there was this medal with an image of Mary and the Infant Jesus mounted on the dashboard. We never knew who put it there. Lord, give me a humble, obedient heart. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING It often seems that evil triumphs in our world and the people of God suffer. In this text from the Prophet Joel we see that, in the end, God will judge all the nations of the earth and vindicate His people. All that Satan builds is built on the sand of lies and deception, so on the day of God’s judgment it will all collapse completely. Even if we do not see the immediate fruit of our labors, let us not give up but trust completely in God. Joel 4:12-21 12 Thus says the LORD: Let the nations bestir themselves and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit in judgment upon all the neighboring nations. 13 Apply the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come and tread, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow, for great is their malice. 14 Crowd upon crowd in the valley of decision; for near is the day of the LORD in the valley of decision. 15 Sun and moon are darkened, and the stars withhold their brightness. 16 The LORD roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem raises his voice; the heavens and the earth quake, but the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the men of Israel. 17 Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God, dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain; Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall pass through her no more. 18 And then, on that day, the mountains shall drip new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk; and the channels of Judah shall flow with water: a fountain shall issue from the house of the LORD, to water the Valley of Shittim. 19 Egypt shall be a waste, and Edom a desert waste, because of violence done to the people of Judah, because they shed innocent blood in their land. 20 But Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem for all generations. 21 I will avenge their blood, and not leave it unpunished. The LORD dwells in Zion. P S A L M Psalms 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12 R: Rejoice in the Lord, you just! 1 The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many isles be glad. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne. (R) 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. (R) 11 Light dawns for the just; and gladness, for the upright of heart. 12 Be glad in the LORD, you just, and give thanks to his holy name. (R) G O S P E L Mary was truly blessed to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, and it was a great joy for her to suckle the infant Jesus. Yet the ultimate virtue of the Virgin Mary was in her total devotion to the will of God in her life. All that she did and achieved was an outcome of her prayer: ”Be it done unto me according to Your Word.” Let us make this prayer of Mary our own prayer today. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 11:27-28 27 While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” 28 He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” my reflections t h i n k : Even if we do not see the immediate fruit of our labors, let us not give up but trust completely in God. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Daniel 10-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Memorial of Blessed Virgin Mary A Look at Mary, our Mother On our TV screens, we often watch news reports from the Middle East with all its problems, especially wars and terrorism. What surprises us at times is seeing how women express their feelings, joy or sorrow, in seemingly exaggerated ways. They scream, throw their arms and hands in the air. I even saw once how women, mourning the death of a loved one, grabbed sand and threw it on their heads, faces and clothes. In this context, I understand well the woman in today’s Gospel passage who is so excited that she suddenly interrupts Jesus’ teaching to praise the mother who was graced by giving birth to such a preacher. The woman, not knowing anything about the divine origin of Jesus, naturally focuses on Mary’s physical motherhood. Not that Jesus denies the blessedness of the woman in whose womb He grew for nine months but, as always, He wants to lead His audience to a deeper spiritual level. He wants Mary’s spiritual motherhood to be seen and praised. Of all those who “hear the word of God and keep it,” Mary is surely the first and the best example. St. Luke tells us how Mary kept “all this in her heart.” She is the perfect disciple. That is why Mary is so honored by Anglicans, recently even by Lutherans, by Catholics and even more by Orthodox Christians. It pains me, therefore, when members of some Christian sects refuse to honor Mary, even accuse us of worshiping her and making her a goddess. Far from it! It was an archangel who called Mary “full of grace” and “highly favored one.” Luke tells us that Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit when she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women!” These words, found in the Bible, are inspired by the Holy Spirit. How can we deny her the honor the Holy Spirit gave her? And when Manny Pacquiao, out of love for his mother, buys her expensive jewelry, how can we not honor the image of our heavenly mother with the most precious adornment possible?Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: How do I honor my heavenly Mother? Is Mary leading me closer to her Son? Lord, thank You for giving us Your wonderful mother as our mother, too. She is, after Your gift of self in the Eucharist, the greatest gift You gave us. Help us to follow her example, listen to Your word, keep it, and become better disciples of Yours. St. Martin Cid, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
