| Feast of St. Francis of Assisi DISTRACTED FROM SERVING Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister left me to do all the serving?” – Luke 10:40 I believe that we have no right to judge the way other people serve, especially those who belong to the same community, because it’s not us whom they serve but God. I’ve been serving in our Children’s Ministry for more than two years now. With all the services I’m involved in (I’m also a coordinator), it can get draining at times. My co-servants see me as an overly committed servant. Truth is, there have been times when I’d complain to God and compare my service with others. For months, my best friends and I sacrificed our good night’s sleep every Saturday just to come up with all the materials needed for the kids the following day. When I got physically tired, I aired out my complaints. “Why do we always have to make the materials? What about the others?” Like Martha, I was distracted from serving the Lord. It suddenly dawned upon me that I was doing all those things because I love God and all the kids entrusted to us. Leeanne Sy (havenofleeanne@yahoo.com) 4 REFLECTION: Are you tired of your service? Instead of comparing your output with others, why not ponder on why you are serving in the first place? Father, I humbly implore You to remind me not to judge my sisters and brothers in their service because it is You whom they are serving and not me. I am also a mere servant in Your vineyard. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING St. Francis was the son of a rich clothing merchant and lived a very self-indulgent and frivolous life in his hometown of Assisi. Yet he was a young man who dreamt of greatness. At one point, he even tried to be a noble knight and fight Assisi’s enemies and win renown for himself. But God had other plans for his life. One night, he had a dream where God was calling him to win fame and glory in His Kingdom. After this Francis lost interest in his former pursuits and wanted to pray and be alone with God who had become his true love and passion. Jonah 3:1-10 1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” 3 So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’s bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,” 5 when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes. 7 Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: “Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water. 8 Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. 9 Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish.” 10 When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. P S A L M Psalms 130:1-2, 3-4, 7-8 R: If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand? 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice! 2 Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. (R) 3 If you, O LORD, mark iniquities, LORD, who can stand? 4 But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered. (R) 7 Let Israel wait for the LORD, for with the LORD is kindness and with him is plenteous redemption; 8 and he will redeem Israel from all their iniquities. (R) G O S P E L The story of Martha and Mary sets before us two women who really loved God and desired to do His will. Martha who was the head of the house was very industrious but also often anxious and driven in her service. Mary was more people-oriented and whenever Jesus came, she made it her first duty to serve Him. We all need to keep in balance the practical concerns that we have with the others’ need for our time and undivided attention. Today let us try to be attentive to the Lord’s presence as we go about our activities. Ezekiel 45-48 ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 10:38-42 38 Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. 39 She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. 40 Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” 41 The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 42 There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” my reflections think: Today let us try to be attentive to the Lord’s presence as we go about our activities. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Ezekiel 45-48 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | All for the Lord I am a person who finds it difficult to sit down and relax. There is always so much to do: teaching, spiritual direction and writing a book, articles for Kerygma and 31 reflections for Sabbath. And it is all for the Lord! I can feel for Martha in today’s Gospel passage. All her efforts, her cooking and her preparations — it was all for the Lord whom she wanted to give the best dinner after He had come back from teaching the whole day. How wrong she was! And how wrong I am! When I hear Jesus gently scolding Martha, surely with a smile on His face, I feel He is talking to me also and maybe to many of those who read this reflection. Yesterday’s parable of the Good Samaritan urged action, reaching out and helping a neighbour in need. But Luke sensed a danger: overactivity at the cost of quiet reflection and prayer. And so He put this scene of Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary immediately after the action - provoking parable. Both stories belong together; they are the two sides of the same coin called “life of a disciple.” We live in a busy world. To sit down and relax can be easily interpreted by busy people as being lazy. But as disciples of the Lord, we will never be able to do the will of God if we do not “sit down at the feet of Jesus” like Mary and listen to His words of guidance and encouragement. Even Jesus often went alone to the mountains to communicate in prayer with His Father. Strengthened by this intimate relationship with God, He emerged ready for the challenges that lay ahead. We, too, need such quiet times. Thanks to the Church for providing us with quiet adoration chapels, with places where we can sit down at Jesus’ feet. There we can pour out our hearts and allow God to fill them with His love. Our heart are doomed to stop moving if they are not refilled by sitting regularly “at the feet of Jesus.”Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: How can I include in my busy schedule fixed times to “sit at the feet of Jesus” and listen to Him? Lord, I am a busy “Martha” trying to do a lot for You. But today You remind me that all this work for You is doomed if I do not spend more time just sitting at Your feet. Thank You, Lord. St. Domnina, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
