| FROM THE BEGINNING Called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God. – Romans 1:1 When I was three years old, I discovered my love for music. I could sing along and even find the second voice to any song. My parents would ask me to perform every time we had a party at home, no-holds-barred. When I was 12 years old, I met the Lord through a Life in the Spirit Seminar. When I entered the hall on the first day of the seminar, I saw the music ministry in front. A flame lit up in my heart. I immediately said to myself, “One day, I’m going to be singing with them.” And I did. I started drowning myself in praise music and I dedicated my voice to singing songs that would glorify God and tell people about His love. I’ve been serving the Lord as a music minister and worship leader for more than half of my life now. There’s nothing I love doing more. As early as age three, the Lord was already revealing to me my calling. Looking back, I doubt that my parents ever thought that I would be serving the Lord the way I do today. But I believe that since the day I was born, I was set apart to preach His Gospel — to deliver His Good News through my talents. George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com) 10 REFLECTION: How is God calling you to preach His Gospel? Lord, in whatever I do, may I carry Your Good News. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING St. Paul calls himself the slave of Jesus Christ. Even though the Apostle Paul was a Roman citizen and had studied under the best rabbis in Jerusalem, he was humble with all his learning and position. Paul saw that since Jesus’ blood had ransomed him (purchased his soul from evil), he no longer belonged to himself but to Jesus, and now wanted to live his life completely for Him and in His service. Romans 1:1-7 1 Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 the Gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh, 4 but established as Son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles, 6 among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; 7 to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. P S A L M Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 R: The Lord has made known his salvation. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) G O S P E L Why does Jesus call the generation in which he lived an evil generation? It was because they refused to accept the message that He brought and only wanted Him to do signs and wonders to entertain them. We, too, can fall into the same trap when we just want priests to tell us funny stories and entertain us but do not want to hear the truth that can damage our pride. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 11:29-32 29 While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. 30 Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. 32 At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.” my reflections t h i n k : We, too, can fall into the trap of wanting only signs and wonders from God when we want priests to tell us funny stories and entertain us but do not want to hear the truth that can damage our pride. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Hosea 1-5 1-5 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Do I really know Jesus? “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, but no sign will be given, except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus could be very blunt, even harsh, when He encounters refusal and unbelief in His message and His person. In today’s Gospel, He addresses people who do not accept His words with faith. Jesus knew Himself as one sent from the Father; His actions and words were given Him by God. Therefore, to reject Him is to reject His Father. When His Father’s honor was at stake, He did not mince words. He spoke out forcibly and became even sharply aggressive when He encountered hypocrisy and deliberate violation of God’s law. Any image of Jesus then that does not include this outspoken attitude in the face of unbelief along with His merciful behavior towards those who truly seek God is defective, even misleading. Nothing is more foreign to Jesus’ character than sentimental overlooking of weaknesses; He requires a confrontation with the truth of one’s sinfulness and of God’s holiness on all who draw near to Him. We who put our faith in Him have the task of forming our own concept of who He is and what He is like based on what He has revealed about Himself to us. We shall never fully grasp, in all its comprehensiveness, His person. Our task is, within the limits of our capacity increased by grace, to approximate ever more closely a true knowledge of His person. May our faith in Him and our longing for Him ever be strong and courageous so that we may know Him in the completeness of His person, that is, not only His loving mercy but also His demanding dedication to the Father’s will. Then we shall be more able to follow Him faithfully in our sufferings and struggles, in death and in life, until we meet Him at the end in the fullness of His glory. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: What is my image of Jesus? Is it formed by pious pictures or by the Bible? Lord, I have fabricated an image of You according to my wishes. It is a sentimental image. Lord, help me to know and accept You as You are — even when You are demanding and have to scold me.
