| Dear Lordie, This Friday, work with Him at your side.
Praying for you,

| SILENCE “And they kept silent... But they were unable to answer his question.” – Luke 14:4, 6 My son came home after staying with friends for a few days following a misunderstanding between us that almost became violent. I met him at the door of our house and, without saying anything, I spontaneously gave him an embrace. It was a quiet embrace that spoke a thousand words. It was a silence that loved, forgave and healed. I also recall a thank you note from a dear friend whose spouse had committed suicide. “Thank you for being there all the time during the wake. And thank you especially for not having said anything and just letting me grieve. I appreciate it very much.” I realized then that I gave him the silence that allowed him to mourn and let go. It was a compassionate, consoling silence that gave him space during a time of grief and allowed him to be himself. Unlike the Pharisees, but like Jesus, we can use silence to love, to heal, to forgive and to let others be themselves. Danny G. Mendiola (dmendiola22@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: How comfortable are you with silence? Can you truly say silence is your friend? Lord, let me remember when to keep silent. Remind me always that it is only in silence that I can listen to You with all my heart. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The hope of Paul for a righteous and holy Philippian community is described very beautifully here. Let us spend a little time reflecting upon all the various attributes that Paul mentions so that we can work on them in our own communities. Let us not be daunted by the task ahead but begin to change one step at a time so that one day in the future, the change will be evident and witness to the power of God at work in our lives. Philippians 1:1-11 1 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, 4 praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, 5 because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. 6 I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. 7 It is right that I should think this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, you who are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, 10 to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. P S A L M Psalm 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 R: How great are the works of the Lord! 1 I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, exquisite in all their delights. (R) 3 Majesty and glory are his work, and his justice endures forever. 4 He has won renown for his wondrous deeds; gracious and merciful is the LORD. (R) 5 He has given food to those who fear him; he will forever be mindful of his covenant. 6 He has made known to his people the power of his works, giving them the inheritance of the nations. (R) G O S P E L There are a number of similar instances where Jesus heals on the Sabbath in the Gospels. It must have been quite an issue during His ministry for so many similar stories to have survived. Perhaps this indicates a tendency for us to look for an easy way out of a difficult situation rather than confronting the issue head on. Let us learn that it is the truth that ultimately represents the path of freedom. Let us live for the truth of love and never forget the example of Jesus. Luke 14:1-6 1 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 2 In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. 3 Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. 5 Then he said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 But they were unable to answer his question. my reflections t h in k : Let us live for the truth of love and never forget the example of Jesus. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 25-28 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WITH LOVE, YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG This was another healing of the Lord Jesus on the Sabbath. Jesus, a Jew, could not stop Himself from curing the man with dropsy. He was moved by the suffering of the man. Also, He took the opportunity to show to the people, especially the scholars of the law and the Pharisees, the Spirit of the law as received by Moses. It is interesting to note that since Moses received the laws from God, the elders created so many additional related laws in order to fulfill the commandments. However, in the process, too much stress was made on the letter of the law than on its essence. Jesus was aware of that development that is why He was very courageous even to earn the ire of the leaders in order to show the real intent of the laws given by God. There is only one law and that is the law of love. With love, one can never go wrong. We refer to love here as a decision to intend the goodness of the other, that is, to lead the other to salvation. That is the ultimate goal of our relationship with one another and with God. Anything we do or say must lead to a union with God. The Ten Commandments were given in order for us to have a way to express our love for one another. They were supposed to be the norms for loving, which is its Spirit. Salvation, though, is not restricted to following those laws. Is fulfilling the laws the ultimate goal? Laws are limited. They do not totally capture the Spirit. To believe that salvation is achieved by merely following the commandments is a mistake. Through these laws, may we learn to love. Through these laws, may we see the Truth. Through these laws, may we find the Way! In other words, the ultimate goal is God! The question of Jesus to the scholars and the Pharisees was very revealing. His message to them was clear. That was why “they were unable to answer.” Surely, they would seek the care of their endangered loved ones even on Sabbath. Its relevance in our lives is clear. The Commandments are guides. What is important is our attitude towards others and God. Let us use the laws, not the other way around. Always seek to love. Love is greater than the laws. Love will see us through. Love will get us to heaven. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: How do you live your life? Do you live a life of love? Do you extend kindness and compassion to people in need even if it would inconvenience you? To be kind, to be compassionate, to be loving to every person I encounter is my prayer, O Lord. St. Bond, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
