| Feast of Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles NO SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God.” – Ephesians 2:19 Tito Orly is an amazing 80-year-old who still drives his own car to Baguio. He has been all over the world, was once connected to the World Bank and was adviser to President Marcos. One time, he suggested to the president that the Philippines should train and equip its professionals for work abroad, and then provide them an incentive to want to come back home once they have gained experience. He said that this would encourage more OFWs to come home as they are not second-class citizens here. His suggestion was turned down. In God’s economy, you and I are always welcome balikbayans. His house is always open to those who want to return home. There are no second-class citizens in His world. The question for us is, do we want to return home? Or are we too busy gaining the world’s riches, fortune and fame that we have forgotten what home feels like? Or, do we feel too ashamed to return — thinking we will not be welcomed back? Friend, don’t think negatively of the Father. Let’s go home. He is waiting, ready to embrace us. Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com) REFLECTION: “You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in You.” (St. Augustine) Dear Father in heaven, You are my true home. You will always welcome me back. Don’t ever let me stray. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Each of us has a part to perform in the Kingdom of God. Each brick in a wall is important because if you remove one it weakens the wall. If you remove enough bricks, the wall will collapse. Each of us is important to God; each of us is different because God has given us different gifts and hence different roles to play in the work of His Kingdom. Let us choose to use the gifts He has given us and be the active “bricks in the wall” that God wants us to be. Ephesians 2:19-22 19 Brothers and sisters: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. P S A L M Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5 R: Their message goes out through all the earth. 1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nora discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. (R) G O S P E L Jesus chooses the twelve after a whole night of prayer. We should include prayer as an aspect of every important decision that we make in our lives. Do you follow this practice? If you do not, then I recommend you do. It is an important safeguard in keeping us obedient to God’s will and not just following our own. It is God’s will that will lead us to fulfillment; it is very unlikely that ours will get us to that end. Luke 6:12-16 12 Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. my reflections t h i n k : Prayer is an important safeguard in keeping us obedient to God’s will, and not just following our own. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 21-24 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | It’s The Mess age, Not The Name Or The Linkage We remember the apostles for the lives they lived. We recognize their witnessing for Jesus. Because of them, He has become more present in His words and deed. The call of the apostles revealed part of God’s plan. Salvation would begin in Israel (Chosen People) and, from there, would extend all over the world. God meant to include man in the work of salvation. Jesus first chose 12 men to follow Him wherever He went. Later, He sent them to minister to those who were in need of salvation. What they had heard, seen and touched with their own hands would be handed down to succeeding generations for the salvation of all. Jesus was founding an organization that would continue to propagate the Christian faith. Today, we call it the Church. Many groups claim by their own reasons that theirs is the True Church of Jesus Christ. Some claim it because they can trace their roots to Jesus Christ. Unlike the former, the Catholic Church does not give reasons. We have a proof of the latter but even that is not why we claim to be the True Church. We are because we are faithful to the message that Christ had given during His ministry. This is the essence of the True Church. Its more important element is the presence of His message of salvation. St. Paul experienced this in the community where the original apostles lived. He claimed to be an apostle, and the other apostles challenged it. Paul told them that the risen Lord appeared to him on his way to Damascus, that He revealed to him the message of salvation. He claimed to be an apostle not by the risen Christ’s apparition, but by the very message he preaches (read Galatians 1:6-9). Therefore, what matters is our faithfulness to His message that, we believe, has been preserved by the apostles. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He commanded them to proclaim the Good News to all. This mission and message (deposit of faith) were passed on. From the apostles, the task now lies with the ordained ministry (Pope, bishops, priests and deacons) and the baptized. What we have received from the apostles is what we now profess. If it comes from the apostles, it must be true. Thanks to the apostles. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Do you believe that our faith is the True Church not only because we can trace our roots to Jesus Christ but because the Church had preserved the deposit of faith that the apostles received? How have you lived our faith as contained in the Apostle’s Creed? Like a true apostle, with my life I shall proclaim that You, Jesus, are Lord and Savior. St. Godwin, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
