| Dear Lordie, Conquer this new week with God's Word in your heart!
Praying for you,

| I KNOW THE FEELING! “But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.” – Luke 10:33 Why was it that it was the Samaritan who cared for the half-dead man and not the socalled religious people? The storyteller in me has a strong hunch: Only the Samaritan “knows the feeling.” The Samaritans are the Jewish enemy and object of scorn. Ignoring a Samaritan is the “most merciful” thing a Jew could do to him or her. A Samaritan “knows the feeling” of being ignored. When the Samaritan saw the beaten-up man, passing by on the other side was not an option. He knew this pain to be as agonizing as, or maybe even worse than, the deep gashes and the gaping wounds. He cared because he felt it. Who do you think can care for the drug addicts better than former drug addicts? Who can reach out to rape victims more than abused people? Who can connect with cancer patients better than cancer survivors? Who can minister to someone who lost a loved one better than those who have been there? God never wastes a hurt. This can make you “know the feeling,” then lead you to reach out to others.Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Do I know someone who has the same hurt now as I had in the past (or as I currently have)? How can I reach out to this person? Lord, I’ve been hurt. Rather than lurking in the pits of self-pity, give me the strength to use this hurt to feel for others and reach out to them. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul cannot understand how anyone who has heard and responded to the Gospel could later reject it. It is inconceivable to him that such a truth once accepted and experienced could ever be neglected. Unfortunately this happens and it happens a lot. It is amazing how seductive the pleasures of the world can be. We need to guard against such things so that we do not endanger the salvation we have received. Galatians 1:6-12 6 Brother and sisters: I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel 7 (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be accursed! 9 As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let that one be accursed! 10 Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ. 11 Now I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin. 12 For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. P S A L M Psalm 111:1b-2, 7-8, 9, 10c R: The Lord will remember his covenant for ever. 1 I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, exquisite in all their delights. (R) 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; sure are all his precepts, 8 reliable forever and ever, wrought in truth and equity. (R) 9 He has sent deliverance to his people; he has ratified his covenant forever; holy and awesome is his name. 10 His praise endures forever. (R) G O S P E L The lawyer answers with an Old Testament answer that holds true under the new covenant being established by Jesus. However, he misses one point that he could not have known at that time. I am referring to the role the Holy Spirit plays in the Christian life. This has not yet been revealed and so he could not have known at the time of his questioning. We know it and so we have no excuse to not place our lives under the grace of the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:25-37 25 There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” 27 He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” 37 He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” 241 my reflections think: We have no excuse to not place our lives under the grace of the Holy Spirit. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Ecclesiastes 5-8 Ecclesiastes 5-8 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Love Thy Neighbor The parable of the Good Samaritan was Jesus’ response to the question, “Who is my neighbor?” As usual, Jesus responded convincingly and to the heart. It will be good to put the story into context. The Jews believed in being the chosen people. By virtue of that privilege, they expected to receive the Good News of salvation first. In fact, that was the plan of God. Jesus, the Good News, was to be born a Jew and there fulfill His ministry. Samaria was not a Jewish town but a Gentile town. They were not expected to receive the Good News before the Jews. Going back to the parable, you can just imagine the reaction of His Jewish audience when He made the Gentile — a Samaritan — the do-gooder and the Jews, the villains. So, who is the neighbor? It is easy to say that in that parable, it was the victim, or any victim of circumstance for that matter. You may say he was the one in need, the person lying on the ground needing assistance. He is the one who is hungry, thirsty, imprisoned, oppressed, confused, etc. You are right. Anyone in need is our neighbor. It is imperative for a Christian to extend any form of assistance to alleviate the poverty and predicament of his neighbor. But if you noticed, in the parable, Jesus pointed us to the other equally important neighbor, the Good Samaritan. He was the one who aided the victim. He saw to it that the victim was fully taken care of. He even left something for him for his further sustenance after bringing him to a home and entrusting him to a caregiver. For Jesus, the neighbor is not only the one in need, but the one who can help those in need. For Jesus, we must be neighbors to each other. We must take care of each other. We have the responsibility to see to it that we share and use the charisms, the gifts that God gave us. St. Paul called it ministering to each other. When we use God’s gifts for the good of the community, we become a minister. In this sense, to be a neighbor is to be a minister. The parable reminds us that we must always be on the lookout, not blind, mute, deaf or numb, to the needs of others. Here and now is the time to help. Neighbor, love thy neighbor. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Are you being a neighbor to anyone in need? Or do you choose whom you would help? Up to what point do you extend your help? Do you always expect something in return when you help? Lord, teach me to recognize every soul as my neighbor and fill me with the compassion to help the ones in need. St. Domnina, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth. Find one near you!
