| ARE YOU A LEPER? One of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice. – Luke 17:15 Lepers were outcasts. They were treated as foremost sinners, manifestations of which were obvious on their skin. Today’s “spiritual lepers” don’t stand at a distance. They mingle with people and appear normal. Yet inside they’re the ones decaying with compounded sins and feelings of emptiness. The symptoms? Let’s spell out L-E-P-E-R: L-ust satisfies the cravings of the body, both food and sexual, leading to poor health and at worst depression. E-nvy desires what others have while ignoring what one has. Shakespeare coined the expression “green-with-envy” because this tarnishes one’s soul with insatiable want. P-ride makes people oblivious of others. They deprive themselves of authentic joy earned through service. E-nticements create the saddest people who can only afford the costly things. Real happiness is both costless and priceless. R-esentment accounts for the things that hurt and brings on physical maladies. The saying is true: the best cure is forgiveness. Are you a LEPER? What’s your symptom? Avail of God’s healing mercy and grace. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com) REFLECTION: What symptoms of sinfulness do I feel right now? It might be time to approach the throne of grace. Have mercy on me, O Lord, and deliver me from the roots of decay inside me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Elisha trusts that God wants the best for His people and thus is willing to commit to the healing of the Syrian, Naaman. What about you? Are you as convinced in God’s love for you as Elisha was? If not, then this is what you have to work on — growing in faith and trust in the goodness of God for you. Why do you doubt? Maybe you need to ask God to heal some past hurts or disappointments. Whatever you need to do to grow in faith, you should start doing it now. 2 Kings 5:14-17 14 Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy. 15 Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.” 16 Elisha replied, “As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it”; and despite Naaman’s urging, he still refused. 17 Naaman said: “If you will not accept, please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth, for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any other god except to the LORD.” P S A L M Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 R: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 2nd READING Paul is not worried as to what happens to him personally as long as the Gospel is proclaimed to those who need to hear it. He has an incredibly deep trust in the goodness and providence of God for his life. If we are to be as effective evangelizers as he was, we will need to pray for a similar depth of conversion and that God’s grace will work powerfully through us as well. 2 Timothy 2:8-13 8 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; 12 if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. G O S P E L This parable not only challenges us to ensure that we express gratitude for the goodness of God towards us, but it also reminds us that so often in the past, it is foreigners that have shown the way for those who are supposed to be the people of faith. It is shameful that this is the case as it is men and women of faith who ought to be the example for the foreigner — the one who supposedly has no faith. At least he has manners, which is more than can be said for the other nine. Luke 17:11-19 11 As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him 13 and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” 14 And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; 16 and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? 18 Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” 19 Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” my reflections t h i n k : Whatever you need to do to grow in faith, start doing it now. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Wisdom 9-12 SABBATH PAUSE My weekly time with God THANK YOU LIST Things to be grateful for from the past week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NEEDS Things to ask God for in the coming week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ HIDDEN TREASURE Most important word God told me this week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Gratitude Saves “Ten were cleansed, were they not?Where are the other nine?” This was the reaction of the Lord Jesus when only one, a Samaritan leper at that, returned to thank Him for healing them of leprosy. If a Jew heard this story, he’d be embarrassed. A Jew is expected to do good acts or to be in the limelight. They are not the chosen people for nothing! The Gentiles, like the Samaritan, are to benefit later. Jesus had performed so many miracles to many people yet no one was recorded to have gone back or been required by Him to give Him thanks. Why, in this case, did He ask about the other nine? What kind of healing was done? In the minds of the Jews, healing the body is also healing the soul. The Jews believed that sicknesses were caused by the sins of the sick person. Lepers were cast out from society because they were considered dirty, not only physically, but also spiritually. And so, the question is: Were they healed only physically, or spiritually, too? The answer is yes. When the Lord Jesus heals, He heals in both levels. But gratitude is also important as shown by this incident. In response to the gratitude of the Samaritan leper, Jesus told him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you!” This means that while the other nine were given the benefit of healing, we cannot really determine the extent of their healing. Nothing was heard about them after that. This is similar to the rich young man who came to Jesus to seek eternal life. Jesus told Him to sell everything and follow Him. Because he was very rich, he went away sad. He was so attached to his riches that following the Lord without them was not enough. But we know what happened to the grateful Samaritan leper. From the very words of Jesus, he was saved — by his faith and his gratitude. This also tells us that gratitude is more for the grateful than for God. God does not need our thanks. He is complete and can be without our gratitude. When we are thankful, we enter the realm of salvation. In recognizing the goodness of God, we get its full benefit. In expressing our appreciation of what He has done for us, He makes us more worthy of more graces. Thank you, Lord, for all the graces You have given. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Do you always appreciate the things that you enjoy today? Do you attribute these to God’s graciousness? Are you aware that gratitude makes you more open to God’s grace and therefore, salvation? Thank You, Lord, for all the answered prayers, and for the unanswered ones, too!
