| NO FEAR! “I will show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.” – Luke 12:5 The wild clash left five of our enemies unconscious. We won that battle in front of the College of Engineering at the University of the Philippines. Thunderous applause came from onlookers who were pleased to see action on an otherwise boring campus day. Was the bloodthirsty me satisfied? No, I wasn’t. Because the frat’s “fearless” hitman got hit! In rumbles, every bloodied head meant a “score.” Therefore they scored on me and the frat. I was de-mystified. The only “pride” I had left was that I fought fiercely. Enemies ganged up on the shortest guy who bludgeoned his way out with a lead pipe. Still I bled profusely. My brods drove me to the hospital. The image of the crucified Lord on the car dashboard struck me: Jesus shed His blood for mankind’s salvation whereas mine was due to blind fanaticism. My vision blurred with tears and blood loss. Was I dying? Will I live? Yes I did. And I live to testify that His love is fiercer than me. Henceforth, I fight in His service — with weapons of love and grace. Ahoo!Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com) REFLECTION: In whose service do you fight for? Is it worth fighting for? …from all the evil that surrounds me defend me, and when the call of death arise, bid me come to Thee that I may praise Thee with Thy saints forever… | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING You and I have been sealed with the gift and promise of the Holy Spirit. When did this happen? It happened when we were baptized. The Holy Spirit has been given to us as early in our lives as then. One of the roles of our parents, and godparents for that matter, as well as the Church, is to awaken us and form us in the way of discipleship such that we will choose to welcome the work of the Spirit in our lives. Ephesians 1:11-14 11 Brothers and sisters: In Christ we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the one who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, 12 so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ. 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 which is the first instalment of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory. P S A L M Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13 R: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. 1 Exult, you just, in the LORD; praise from the upright is fitting. 2 Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises. (R) 4 For upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. 5 He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full. (R) 12 Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down; he sees all mankind. (R) G O S P E L The world is a dangerous enemy. It is as simple as that. The world and its pleasures are incredibly seductive and we can be caught up in them before we even realize it. It can be incredibly difficult to extract ourselves from the clutches of the world once we have given in to them. This is what we must seek to avoid at all costs by exercising good and healthy discernment before we take on any of the values or things the world offers us through modern media. Luke 12:1-7 1 At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven — that is, the hypocrisy — of the Pharisees. 2 “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. 4 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. 5 I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. 7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.” my reflections t h i n k : W e must seek to avoid the clutches of the world at all costs by exercising good and healthy discernment before we take on any of the values or things the world offers us. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Sirach 11-15 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Honesty Is The Best Policy Accountability is one trait that is lacking in the present generation. A lot of people seem to be getting away with anything — corruption, traffic violations, fraud, crimes, deceptions and many more. Name it and most likely someone has gotten away with it. Honesty, the best policy, has come to mean “not being caught!” Today’s Gospel strongly reminds us that nothing can be hidden. The all-knowing God knows everything that we do and have done. He knows our intentions. This fact is very relevant because we tend to live as if we could hide and get away with anything. “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.” The best way to approach life, according to the Lord, is to strive to live a holy life always. To live a secret life is very tiring and troubling. The satisfaction one gets in things wrongly acquired is always fleeting. The lingering suffering and anxiety are not worth it. This is further complicated and made difficult when one aches for repentance. Human effort will not suffice. God, in His Spirit, is the needed presence to make it happen. Jesus further said, “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more.” Satan cunningly makes use of “spiritual” things in the guise of material things. I know of a doctor who had a good life. Suddenly, he became a very popular and sought-after doctor. Nothing wrong with being successful, but his money and prestige opened a lot of “temptation gates.” His family time was greatly affected. He became choosy with his patients. He became lax in his commitments. Worst of all, he acquired a mistress. After realizing what happened in his life, he told me that his life was better without the money and the prestige. I told him that it was not the money and prestige but his attitude towards these that ruined him. Satan succeeded in luring him to sin. The Lord Jesus assures us that He loves us and cares for us. But He needs us to be honest with Him. A relationship based on honesty and trust will allow Him to mold us into what He wants us to be. If we are not honest, we shall answer to God when we come face-to-face with Him in His Kingdom. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: How much are you willing to sacrifice for your salvation? Is being with God more important to you than anything this world can give? Are you willing to do what it takes? In honesty and trust, I open myself up to You, O Lord. Use me as You please. Blessed Victoria Strata, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth. Find one near you!
