| GOOD FRUIT “For every tree is known by its own fruit.” – Luke 6:44 My grandfather was a great man. He wrote 2,000 laws for the Philippines and was famous for knowing and upholding the constitution. He was a passionate statesman who sought the good of the country. When I was young, my grandmother would always want us to include our middle name whenever we wrote our names or introduced ourselves. But I felt I was namedropping. I simply wasn’t comfortable with telling people “who I was.” Over the past few years, I’ve been called to serve the Lord on a larger scale. During one talk I gave, I was introduced by my full name. After I finished, someone came up to me and asked if I was the grandson of the late Senator Arturo Tolentino. I said yes. She said, “No wonder you speak well. You took after your grandfather.” Nowadays, I always include my middle name. Because if I do anything good, I want to honor my grandfather by letting people know whom I take after. I want people to know that he bore good fruit. It also applies to the fact that as a Christian, I carry the name of Christ wherever I go. If I do right, He is glorified. REFLECTION: What kind of fruit are you? Lord, may You be glorified in my every thought, word and deed. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING We need never fear to come to Jesus no matter what wrong we may have done. As the Apostle Paul reminds Timothy, the very purpose of Jesus’ coming into our world was to save us, not to condemn us. In fact, as soon as we fall, we should immediately turn our hearts to Jesus and tell Him we are sorry and ask for His mercy. Then ask Him to fill us with His Holy Spirit again. The worst thing to do is to stay in our sin, feeling condemned and rejected by God and ourselves. That only gives sin and the devil more opportunities to keep us defeated. 1 Timothy 1:15-17 15 Beloved: This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. 16 But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. 17 To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. P S A L M Psalms 113:1-2, 3-4, 5, 6-7 R: Blessed be the name of the Lord forever. 1 Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. (R) 3 From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the LORD to be praised. 4 High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. (R) 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, 6 and looks upon the heavens and the earth below? 7 He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor. (R) G O S P E L Our humble acceptance of His Word and quick obedience to it pleases God. We can train ourselves in obedience. For example, when someone asks us to do something for them, we immediately stop what we are doing and do what they ask. This way, we train our hearts to be detached from our self-will and to always be docile to the movement of the Holy Spirit as He prompts or directs us. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 6:43-49 43 Jesus said to his disciples: “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. 45 A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. 46 Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. 48 That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built. 49 But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.” my reflections t h i n k : The worst thing to do is to stay in our sin, feeling condemned and rejected by God and ourselves. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Jeremiah 15-18 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Faith On Its Feet Jesus began His teaching today by reminding people that a good tree does not bear rotten fruits and a rotten tree does not bear good fruits. As God’s creatures, we have divine qualities that are proper to our humanity. We cultivate them to perfection every time we follow His command. Then, to further guide His listeners, Jesus gave the parable of the house built on rock, saying that if we are to be strong, consistent and stable in faith, we must build our life in the “lived” Word of God. Having read or heard the Word only accomplishes an encounter with God. After Mass one Sunday morning, a parishioner approached me and said that I just repeated the homily I gave last year for the same occasion. I thought about it and admitted to him that, yes, it was the same homily. I asked him if there is a problem. He said that it seems I did not prepare a homily. He had a point but repeating a homily is not bad. In fact, the Gospels give a united message: salvation. The Word of God is to communicate this message of salvation. It is not about giving a new message but in having a new way of communicating the same message. The burden is more on the hearer. Given the right message, the hearer must go and live the message. I looked at the person and answered him, “Yes, I admit I delivered the same homily, the same message. Have you lived it?” Surprised at the table being turned on him, he went away quietly. Hopefully the message was clear to him. We priests who give homilies are not exempt from living the message. In fact, our witnessing to the Gospel message is the best preaching. If people see the message in our lives, I believe we may already be exempted from giving homilies. The goal is for the message to be received as the Lord had given it. In preparing a homily, the priest is already confronted by the Word. More than anyone, it is the priest who is first faced with the challenge of the Word. In a way, the delivery of the homily is influenced by how much the priest has been affected by it. Hopefully, the message is not only given but already testified to by the life of the priest. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Do you get tired of hearing the same message at Mass? It is perhaps time to live the message. Lord, help me to build my life on a strong foundation — Your Word.
