| WORDLY CONCERNS, HEAVEN LY FOCUS Keep your minds fixed on things there (in heaven), not on things here on earth. – Colossians 3: 2 “I’m sorry, Lord. I spend more time with my family — talking, eating, playing together — than on my prayer time with you. I waste more time with friends, with brothers and sisters in community, listening to their needs and building them up than on reading the Bible. I think of our businesses most of the time — of how to serve our clients more with excellence and love and of how to uplift the lives of our employees — more than I contemplate on the mysteries of the faith and teachings of the Church. I’m sorry, Lord. I built a house here on earth and filled it with joy and love. I should focus more on my home in heaven. I am concerned with day-to-day things. I even have a car that brings me to people in different places, and a cell phone and a laptop to keep in touch with them. I am such a worldly man. Forgive me, Lord.” Know what? I hear my God telling me: “My son, you are concerned with worldly things but when you bring my love in what you do, you bring heaven closer to you and to others. Keep it up, my child!” Alvin Barcelona (kpreacheralvin@gmail.com) 7 REFLECTION: Are you concerned with worldly things for their own sake? Or are they your means to bring God and heaven closer to you and to others? Dear God, let my worldly concerns be ultimately focused on heaven — on You — as the main reason for it all. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Now that we have been united with Christ Jesus in baptism, our new life is one in union with Him. Hence we should no longer live as unbelievers who give no thought to God, but by the power of the cross put to death the evil passions and desires in our hearts. Colossians 3:1-11 1 Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. 6 Because of these the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. 7 By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths. 9 Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all. P S A L M Psalms 145:2-3, 10-11, 12-13 R: The Lord is compassionate toward all his works. 2 Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD and highly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. (R) 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) G O S P E L From the perspective of the Kingdom of God, what would ordinarily be considered a curse and misfortune is seen as a blessing. This is only possible when we see things with eternity in mind, when all the worldly and human values will be turned upside down. What Jesus emphasizes in these teachings is the importance of knowing our total need for God, which wealth and riches can obscure. For St. Francis, poverty was a blessing as it made him more like Jesus and totally dependent on God for all his needs. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Rejoice and leap for joy! Your reward will be great in heaven. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 6:20-26 20 Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. 21 Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.” my reflections think: We should no longer live as unbelievers who give no thought to God, but by the power of the cross put to death the evil passions and desires in our hearts. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Jeremiah 4-6 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Blessedness Is Being With God Who is truly blessed? In the Gospel today, Jesus said they are the poor, hungry, weeping, hated and excluded, insulted, and denounced as evil. On the contrary, He pronounced woes on the rich, the laughing and those of good reputation. Then and now, this teaching would receive much resistance, criticism and ridicule. But Jesus knew what He was saying. The key to unlocking the wisdom of His reversal teaching is in the cause of the blessedness and the curse. Jesus points out that blessedness is achieved if the above situations occur because of Him. Poverty, hunger, weeping, and so on will be blessed situations if we experience them because of faithfulness to the Lord. But if one, in his poverty, sorrow and difficulties, is unfaithful and resorts to sin, then he is not blessed but cursed instead. But they, too, can attain blessedness if they share their gifts with the poor and so on. Situations of dire need comes to every person. There’s always the temptation to take the easy way out. I was not spared of it. Once, I made an appeal for medicines for our parish medical clinic. After the Mass, a person approached me and said that his brother, a doctor in the United States, could send me a lot of of medicines. To make the long story short, the medicines arrived in a cargo box addressed to my bishop and was ready for pick up at the customs office. I went there at 8:00 a.m. and on the first window, I was charged P20 for an application form without a receipt. Then I was made to wait, approach one table after another, and talk to a lot of people. By 3:00 p.m., I had enough. My paper was being processed slowly because I refused to give bribe money to the persons involved. It was immoral and as a priest retriving the cargo of a bishop, it was unbecoming and unacceptable. I left proud that I did not succumb to the temptation. But I did not give up. I sought help from authorities and eventually, the cargo was obtained morally. Blessedness is not found in material things, power, fame or whatever this world could offer. It is in having a good relationship with the Lord. Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: How strong am I in resisting the temptation to cut corners to attain my goal or to get out of a problematic situation? Lord, strengthen me when my resolve to follow Your will in all things and in all situations weaken. St. Eustace, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
