| AN OTHER STEP Provided that you persevere in the faith. – Colossians 1:23 The Church calls it “final perseverance,” which is defined by the Catholic Encyclopedia as “the preservation of the state of grace till the end of life.” The saints prayed for it and I copy them, praying for it from time to time, “Lord, grant me final perseverance.” The Lord gives grace. Time and again, from the simplest rising from bed to attend morning Mass when I would rather go to sleep, to the will to minister when I would rather stay in a corner and entertain the blues, the Lord has given grace. And when I hear someone say that I seem to be always happy, then I know it really must be grace. For I might joke when I introduce myself, “Ligaya ang itawag mo sa akin” (Call me happiness), but that’s not always how I feel or think. But perhaps that is the grace of final perseverance. That when it seems like you can’t take another step, you do. And then you take another. And so on until you come before the One whom you want to see face-to-face. And so I will continue to pray for final perseverance, knowing with faith that He will never keep it from me. Let me never forget it. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING God’s intention for each of us is that we become truly holy like Jesus. This will be accomplished in our lives, as St. Paul tells us, if we persevere in our faith and do not get sidetracked. Let us pray today for this gift of perseverance. Colossians 1:21-23 21 Brothers and sisters: You once were alienated and hostile in mind because of evil deeds; 22 God has now reconciled in the fleshly Body of Christ through his death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable before him, 23 provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the Gospel that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister. P S A L M Psalms 54:3-4, 6, 8 R: God himself is my help. 1 [3] O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause. 2 [4] O God, hear my prayer; hearken to the words of my mouth. (R) 4 [6] Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life. 6 [8] Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness. (R) G O S P E L The Pharisees had 613 laws that one had to follow if one wanted to fulfil the law of God as they interpreted it. One was not to harvest grain on the Sabbath. Even the disciples rubbing some grains in their hands and eating it were considered breaking the law. Jesus defends the disciples’ action as He always placed the demands of charity above the law. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 6:1-5 1 While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” 3 Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry? 4 How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions.” 5 Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.” my reflections think: We can be truly holy like Jesus if we persevere in our faith. Let us pray today for this gift of perseverance. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 57-60 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | God Rules The Rules It should not take a genius to know that if you believe in God, then it should be God who must prevail and be obeyed. But actual experience tells us that it is easier said than done. In many instances, we still disobey God and do our will instead of His. That was one of the main reasons why God sent His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Aside from the Father’s intention of letting us believe that He is with us, He wanted us to know the real intent and spirit of His commandments. Salvation should be the ultimate goal of everything that we do. Everything we do must advance our relationship with God. In the same way, everything we do must be a rejection of the attraction of evil. Everything we do must be a defeat of satan. The laws were supposed to fulfill all of the above. One time, I was reviewing for our final examinations in the seminary. A fellow seminarian knocked at my door and asked me to pray with him in the chapel. He wanted company in asking God for an intention. It was a very tempting invitation but I was reviewing for my examinations. I told him that I couldn’t go. If I left and prayed, I’d surely endanger my passing that subject. Part of my responsibility to the vocation of the priesthood was to pass my subjects. Had I gone to pray and failed in my exam, I would have been a good Christian but found wanting in becoming a minister of God. My decision was not because I did not want to pray or that prayer was not a good act. It was my review time and not my prayer time. It wasn’t God’s will for me to pray that particular time. At another time, I would have easily gone with him in prayer. St. Ignatius calls it discernment or the capacity to see through things in terms of their apostolic value and salvific relevance. It helps us to do things according to the intentions of God. Faced with a lot of rules to follow in our lifetime, we have to remind ourselves that those rules are manmade and therefore limited. Only God, who is omnipotent and from whom those rules came from, is perfect. Therefore, only God rules the rules! Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Do I take into consideration God’s will for me in every little decision I make? Lord, let me see Your will for me in the big and small decisions I do. St. Natalis, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
