| Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary THE FLOOD THAT SAVED ME We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 Whenever there is a downpour, our street is the first to be flooded. I had dreamt to live in a better subdivision, but for a dozen reasons, we could not leave our place. Still, I hated the floods — until Ondoy came on September 26, 2009. At 7 a.m., our street was already flooded, so I couldn’t go to work. That saved me from being stranded for long hours in traffic and from being exposed to dangerous situations. At about 10 a.m., the flood started to creep into our house. Alarmed, I sent text messages to friends to pray for us. But I found out some of them were suffering a lot worse. So I called on Jesus to save us and asked Mary and all the saints I could name to intercede for us. The floodwater gradually left our living room. Later, I learned the subdivisions I dreamt to live in were ravaged by the floods. Had we lived in those subdivisions, we would have been among those who lost their homes. It is difficult to fathom why we suffer, but even in the midst of our ordeal, let us cling to the promise in Romans 8:28: That all things will eventually work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. Cynthia Santiago (boses2go@gmail.com) 8 REFLECTION: To everything, there is a season and a good reason. Lord, strengthen my faith that I may feel Your presence especially in my darkest hours. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Many texts in the Old Testament speak of a coming king who would be of the tribe of David and who would establish a universal kingdom that would never end. In this text from the Prophet Micah, it is revealed that the king would be born in Bethlehem, which is what the scribes told King Herod when the Wise Men inquired where the Messiah was to be born. The mother of Jesus is also mentioned when it says, “when she who is to give birth has born.” Micah 5:1-4 (or Romans 8:28-30) 1 The LORD says: You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. 2 (Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne, and the rest of his brethren shall return to the children of Israel.) 3 He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; and they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; 4 he shall be peace. P S A L M Psalms 13:6, 6 R: With delight I rejoice in the Lord. 5 [6] Though I trusted in your mercy, let my heart rejoice in your salvation. (R) Let me sing of the LORD, “He has been good to me.” (R) G O S P E L Matthew shows the family tree of St. Joseph beginning with Abraham, the father of faith, even though Jesus was not his son except by fostering. By starting with Abraham, Matthew is emphasizing not the physical ancestors of Jesus but those of faith. As St. Paul was to say, the true descendants of Abraham are those with the same faith as him and not just connected to him through physical descent. We, too, are united to Abraham and Jesus by our faith. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are you, holy Virgin Mary, deserving of all praise; from you rose the sun of justice, Christ our God. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 1 The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, 6 Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. 8 Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, ehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. 12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. 18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” my reflections t h i n k : W e are united to Abraham and Jesus by our faith. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Jeremiah 7-10 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Happy Birthday, My Mother, My Model! She is the Mother of God. She is the perfect disciple. She is a woman of faith. She is a model of Christian living. The devotion to Mother Mary ranges from the most basic to the most sublime. Her being an intercessor goes as far as seeing her as a giver of grace, either from her own or from her Son. This is one of the reasons why other religions would attack our faith as idolatrous. While there is some truth to the accusation that some of our faithful almost worship our Blessed Mother, the Catholic faith never teaches that she is God, a salvific grace-giver, or a necessary conduit for the grace of God. That title and capacity is given only to Jesus our Lord and Savior. Even as a priest, I would not consider myself as a die-hard Marian devotee. My relationship to her is because of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. It is clear to me that she cannot save me but she can show me the way. She does not give me grace but she can show me how to avail of it from her Son. She is not God but she bore God in her human womb. I do not look up to her in prayer but feel her by my side praying with me. In moments of need, sorrow, decision, failure and other dire situations, she inspires, comforts, encourages and joins me. She is a mother to me, too. As a young priest, I was invited by a family who regularly goes to the Carmel Church in Lipa, the home of the famous apparition, Mary Mediatrix of All Graces, through then Sister Teresing Castillo. That first visit to Carmel attracted me to the devotion. Since then, together with that family, I would visit and hear Mass there at 6:00 a.m. every first Saturday. The devotion became a part of my spiritual life. The regular monthly visit to the church has helped me go through all the challenges of my ministry and personal life. It has given me peace amidst some turbulent events in my life. I am always confident knowing that every first Saturday at Carmel, our Blessed Mother would join me in approaching her Son. As Christians, we do not just wallow in our membership to the faith by virtue of our baptism. Like Mary, we should also live it — to the full! Happy Birthday, Mother Mary! Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: What is the role of Mother Mary in your life? Jesus, thank You for giving us Your mother to lead us to You.
