| | PARKING LOT OCTAGON “But I tell you...” – Matthew 5:39 I was in a parking lot comfortably backing into a vacant slot when a lady screamed at me. She was alleging that the space was hers since she signaled first. I would have wanted to assert my right of space as guaranteed by the Constitution (huh?). I have my rights! I was sure I had been first to see and arrive at the spot. But I just smiled and said, “All for you, ma’am. Walking a few extra steps by parking a little farther is good exercise for me.” Conceding didn’t only make me “holier.” I had many other benefits: 1. It was good for my body. My blood pressure didn’t have to rise due to seething anger. 2. I saved time. A fight with someone was not included in my schedule. 3. I saved energy. I didn’t have to explain to my two kids who were in the car with me why I was expending so much energy over a petty issue. 4. I saved my face. I’m sure people wouldn’t appreciate seeing a Kerygma preacher and Didachewriter rolling over the parking lot octagon pulling hairs with someone (though I could’ve easily won since there isn’t much hair to pull on my head). 13 REFLECTION: Are you allowing the one who hurt you in the past to continually inflict pain on you through your burning desire to get even with him/her? I need your help, Lord. Set me free from the poison of “expired anger” that continues to ruin my life. | |

| | COMPANION | 1st READING “Do not neglect the grace of God that you have received.” This is tremendously important advice for us to heed in our lives as disciples of Jesus. There is nothing more frustrating than watching someone waste a gift or anything they have been given, especially if you are the one who gave it it to them! If this is how we naturally feel about wasting talent, then how much more so will God be disappointed? 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 1 Brothers and sisters: As your fellow workers, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says: “In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 3 We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault may be found with our ministry; 4 on the contrary, in everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in afflictions, hardships, constraints, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, vigils, fasts; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, in a Holy Spirit, in unfeigned love, 7 in truthful speech, in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right and at the left; 8 through glory and dishonor, insult and praise. We are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful; 9 as unrecognized and yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and yet not put to death; 10 as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all things. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) G O S P E L Jesus tells us that revenge is never an option for a Christian. When someone sins against us we are obliged to forgive them. This does not mean that we have to let them trample over us again and again, but it does mean that we have to put aside any notions of revenge or getting even. A person who sins against us will lose a certain level of our trust but even here we should seek to rehabilitate the relationship to its former level if we are to be truly faithful to the meaning of forgiveness. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 5:38-42 38 Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. 40 If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. 41 Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.” my reflections think: Do not neglect the grace of God that you have received. | | SABBATH | STOPPING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE, JESUS-STYLE Offended, taken advantage of, even forced against our will: familiar situations to most of us, surely. Even St. Paul had his share of them, as he states in the first reading today. But can we say the same of our Lord’s teaching for such situations (as seen in today’s Gospel), that it is also just as familiar to us? Yes, for sure we have heard about civil disobedience and nonviolent revolutions. But isn’t it also true that the popular dictum, “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” has become more of our guiding principle in this dog-eat-dog world of ours? Our Lord surely didn’t mean that we have to stupidly submit ourselves to violence. I don’t think He would ever want us to end up bruised and battered, mangled and violated. Instead, He wants the vicious cycle of violence to stop. Taking revenge never solves nor ends violence; it only aggravates it. American writer Isaac Asimov rightly remarked that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. We are far from being incompetent, for the Lord Jesus empowers us with better alternatives in order to stop violence. And so, if, for example, someone strikes us on the right cheek, are we going to literally follow our Lord’s recommendation and turn the other cheek as well? Yes. (Why not?) But if that abuser and exploiter gets ready for another round of punching and hurting us, what shall we do? Start ducking, or get ready to turn again the other cheek? No. We grab his hand, shake it in a gesture of peace and reconciliation, and start a dialogue with him. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: When confronted with violence, how do you react?
