| Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle 11 GOD IS GENEROSITY “Freely you have received, freely give.” – Matthew 10:8 I once attended a retreat with the theme “God Is Generosity.” Our speaker, John Keating, said that what he will share about our generous Father is nothing new. But what amazed me was discovering a deeper understanding of the extent of God’s generosity to me and His children. John shared that God created us and He called everything into being that He may be able to share His generosity with us and all of creation. Imagine that? God created me so that He can give me His all — out of His abounding love, glorious riches and tender mercy. Who else would do that for me? Who would create me in His image and likeness, make me a little less than a god and give me a soul? Who would provide for all I need even before I ask? Who would send His only beloved Son to die for me that I may be saved? Only God — a God whose generosity is immeasurable and beyond human understanding. I know God can never be outdone in His generosity and I believe He doesn’t expect me to. But what I do know is that God wants me to accept what He gives so that I can in turn give as much to others. Then in my emptiness, God will once again fill me up with all the good I need.Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2Corinthians 9:11) Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve You as You deserve, to give and not to count the cost. (Prayer for Generosity by St. Ignatius de Loyola) | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Barnabas was known to be a man who encouraged others as his name suggests. He is the one at least partially responsible for Paul becoming a power and force for the proclamation of the Gospel. He nurtures Paul in the faith before encouraging him to present himself to the Apostles in Jerusalem with his plan to bring the Gospel to the Gentile peoples. Maybe there would have been no Paul if not for Barnabas and his willingness to place his life at the service of the formation of others. Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3 21 In those days a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, 24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. 25 Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. 13: 1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off. P S A L M Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6 R: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R) G O S P E L The true disciple is not concerned about insisting on his own way, only in being obedient to wherever the Lord leads him. A good leader in the Church is always at the service of and led by Jesus. Let us pray for all who are working in the formation of priests throughout the world’s seminaries that they be able to inspire a spirit of service and humility in the men they are training through the witness of their lives. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 10:7-13 7 Jesus said to the Twelve: “As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. 9 Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; 10 no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The labourer deserves his keep. 11 Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter a house, wish it peace. 13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you.” my reflections think: The true disciple is not concerned about insisting on his own way, only in being obedient to wherever the Lord leads him. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Maccabees 13-15 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | SET APART AND SENT Today we honor St. Barnabas, a contemporary of Peter, Paul and the other apostles. He is also given the title of apostle, for that was what he truly was. With a name meaning “son of consolation,” Barnabas had a helpful, optimistic nature. Upon his conversion shortly after Pentecost, he gave up all his possessions. He assisted Paul and accompanied him for a while on the first missionary journey. From our liturgical readings today, we obtain helpful clues as to the apostles’ mission. The first is that they are “set apart,” as in the case of Barnabas and Saul. The term means “reserved,” designated for a special mission. From the Gospel, however, we note that apostles are sent. In the case of the former, the “setting apart” is upon a command of the Holy Spirit — who is the one doing the setting apart, in reality. In the latter case, the apostle is sent, but not just on his own into a sinkor- swim situation. No, he has his “marching orders,” not so much to fulfill as in a to-do list, but more to guide him on what to bring or what to do so as to carry out the mission in a more focused and efficient way. Have we ever considered that as followers of Jesus Christ, we, too, have been in a way set apart and sent? We might think perhaps that the Christian life is merely to blend along with the rest of our fellow Christians. Nothing can be farther from the truth. God is setting us apart from the rest, for a special mission — a unique one, which He might not likewise be giving to others. It is not that the mission is ours entirely. Here perhaps is an instance when the “passive voice” of the verb (grammatically speaking) is truly preferable. While we may be the one being set apart and sent, God on the other hand is truly the one acting in both the setting apart and the sending. In allowing Him to act upon us, we become worthy instruments in the hands of God, just like Barnabas was in his lifetime. Fr.Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: What has God sent you to do with your life? If it isn’t clear yet, ask Him for the grace to know in prayer and through your life history and personal giftedness. Here I am, Lord. Send me.
