| CONVOY “Follow me.” – John 21:19 My friend Jose is funny when he leads convoys. You’d think someone was chasing him. He drives so fast even when he knows that people need to stay close to him because they don’t know where to go and rely on him to show them the way. I honestly can get a bit impatient when leading convoys myself. It’s inconvenient to keep looking in the mirror and slowing down because you might lose the person you’re leading. Oftentimes, I want to go faster but I have to restrain myself because the car following me can’t go as fast. Jesus could’ve chosen to stay on His throne in heaven and asked me to follow Him from where I was — but He didn’t. He came to earth so that He could be close to me. He lived the same kind of life I live so that I could see His example clearly. He moved according to my pace so I would “get it.” No matter how slow I can be, even if I lose Him and fall behind every now and then, He meets me where I am and continues to guide me along the way. REFLECTION: Are you following God’s lead? Lord, show me the way. I will follow. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul is accused of breaking a number of Jewish religious laws. It seems ridiculous that the Roman authorities will take it upon themselves to determine a matter of Jewish law! Yet this is what happened to Paul, as it happened also to Jesus and probably many of the martyrs of the Early Church. The Jews are inspired by jealousy and fear that their positions in Judaism are going to be weakened by this new Christian sect. They want to hold on to their power bases. Acts 25:13-21 13 King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea on a visit to Festus. 14 Since they spent several days there, Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying, “There is a man here left in custody by Felix. 15 When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation. 16 I answered them that it was not Roman practice to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge. 17 So when they came together here, I made no delay; the next day I took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought in. 18 His accusers stood around him, but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected. 19 Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus who had died but who Paul claimed was alive. 20 Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy, I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem and there stand trial on these charges. 21 And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.” P S A L M Psalms 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20 R: The Lord has established his throne in heaven. 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (R) 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. (R) 19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the LORD, all you his angels, you mighty in strength, who do his bidding. (R) G O S P E L Jesus tests Peter as anyone would test someone to whom he is about to entrust such tremendous responsibility and authority. A true leader never exercises power for their own benefit but always seeks to be a servant to his or her constituency. Probably the easiest way to judge whether a person is a good and worthy leader is to see who benefits the most from their exercise of power. If it is friends and relatives, they will be judged extremely harshly by God, as the example of Jesus tells us that the poor and the powerless must always be our first concern. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 21:15-19 15 After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.” my reflections t h i n k: As the example of Jesus tells us, the poor and the powerless must always be our first concern. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Maccabees 11-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | PUTTING OURSELVES IN THE SHOES OF PETER As we inch slowly towards Pentecost Sunday, our Gospel readings give us a sense of coming towards an end. In fact, Chapter 21 of John’s Gospel is an appendix of post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. Today’s passage is the well-known narrative of the incident with Simon Peter — his tender dialogue with the Lord, his being reinstated as the chief shepherd but also as the apostle who will suffer and die. As we seek to apply to ourselves this Gospel passage, we picture Jesus also asking us, “Do you love me?” And we also picture ourselves affirming repeatedly our love for Him (even if with an occasional sulking, just like what Peter had). Finally, we also picture ourselves being commissioned by Jesus to assume roles and tasks, and even leadership, even if it should require self-denial and sacrifice. In the end, what counts is simply to follow Jesus. It is in our following Him that we prove our love for Him and fulfill the tasks He gives us. Rather than go about doing as we please, with spiritual maturity definitely comes the self-denial essential to obeying God’s holy will. Tradition has it that Peter deemed himself unworthy to die like his Master Jesus, and so he asked his executors to let him be crucified inverted — that is, with his head at the bottom part of the cross. Surely our future death won’t have the slightest literal semblance of such a horrible kind of crucifixion. But what matters most is that we glorify God with and in our lives, as disciples of Jesus.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: Imagine Jesus sitting in front of you, asking, “Do you love me?” What would your answer be? You know, Lord, that I love You. But may I have the will to show it through my actions, through my life, through my love for others. St. Gezelin, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
