| 12Speaking in Tongues “Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?” – Acts 2: 8 Having lived in Korea for months as a scholar, my niece, Gia, speaks the language quite well. One day, in the bank, she noticed a Korean lady having a hard time communicating with the teller. Out of pity, she volunteered to translate. The lady’s transaction was finished in no time. I can imagine her relief when Gia helped her. On our trip to Shanghai, our tour guide made our shopping sprees a breeze. On a card, she wrote in Chinese characters the names of our hotel and the best bargain places in town. We showed this to the taxi driver and had no trouble getting around. Interpreters are such useful people to have around. They help us to understand and be understood. As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, I thank God for the gift of the divine interpreter, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit empowered the Apostles at the first Pentecost to proclaim God to people of different tongues. To this day, the Spirit continues to grant us, God’s servants, gifts that allow us to understand His will and to be understood by the people we want to share these with. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: What gifts of the Spirit do I need today to show God’s love to people whose lives I touch? O Holy Spirit, fill me with Your light. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Remember, all of those gathered in the room at Pentecost received the Holy Spirit. If you sincerely want the Holy Spirit in your life, we can be sure that God will give Him to you. There is a certain sadness that prevails in the Church when the Holy Spirit is not active within our lives for one reason or another. We are not who we can be if we are without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Too often the Holy Spirit is there in our lives but not active due to our ignorance or neglect. Let this not be the case with us! Acts 2:1-11 1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. 6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? 9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, 11 both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” P S A L M Psalms 104:1, 24, 31, 34, 29-30 R: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! 24 How manifold are your works, O LORD! The earth is full of your creatures; (R) 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! 34 Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. (R) 29 If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (R) 2nd READING The lists given in the Scriptures (mainly in the writings of St Paul) are many and varied. Some say there are 41 distinct gifts mentioned at various points! No matter how many there are, the point Paul wants to make here is that one person does not have a monopoly on all or any of the gifts. The gifts of the Spirit work best when they are used in the context of a community of faith and for the benefit of all. Yes, some gifts are more personal, but even these can be placed, in one way or another, at the service of the community from time to time. 1Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13 3 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord; 6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 12 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. G O S P E L That Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit onto His Apostles is harking back to when the breath of God hovered over the waters of chaos at Creation and then the spoken word of God brings forth order and life. John is aware of this ancient text and so draws on this image in this description of the Johannine Pentecost. As we celebrate Pentecost today let us realize that we are receiving an enormous gift that gives us access to the power of God. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 20:19-23 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” my reflections t h i n k: The gifts of the Spirit work best when they are used in the context of a community of faith for the benefit of all. NO WAY! Back when I was still studying Theology before my priestly ordination, I came across a “shocking” quotation about the Holy Spirit from a priest-theologian. It goes, “After 20 long centuries of Christianity, the Holy Spirit means next to nothing to the average Christian.” We can almost kick up a storm in reaction against such a sweeping, almost irresponsible statement. But immediately on second thought, can it be true at least in some sense? The operative word in the above quotation is the adjective average. (Look at it again.) That’s where the problem lies: when one is mediocre or not up to par in living out one’s faith. Let’s try to apply this to our very selves: we can easily give in to minimalism and laziness in the spiritual life. If that were the case, it naturally follows that the Holy Spirit has little to do in our spiritual life. The cause for this may be plain forgetfulness or neglect. It’s like wearing eyeglasses. When they’re set comfortably on our nose bridge, we tend to be unaware of them. Their best work is done when, through them, we can watch a movie clearly or read a book well. Eyeglasses are not to be seen, but to be seen through. The solution lies, therefore, not so much in contemplating or analyzing the Holy Spirit, but in a greater awareness of it in our lives and in our world. It’s like we turn the pages of life but we don’t read the book! That is too, why, someone said, “If I were to begin my life again, I should want it as it was. I would only open my eyes a little more.” We should truly open our eyes a little more to see the workings of the Spirit in us. Perhaps that quotation in our first paragraph was truly intended to wake us up from our indifference to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. For us, it simply cannot be that the Holy Spirit means next to nothing. On this Pentecost Day, therefore, we renew our awareness of the Spirit’s role in our lives as Christians. And we commit to bring that awareness to fruition as well in our lives as Christians. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: How sensitive are you to the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life? Holy Spirit, wake me up from my deep slumber. St. Cunera, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
