Daily Bible Reflections for December 29, 2010 Dear Lordie, God will never leave you. This Wednesday is no different. Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 29 December Wednesday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE   A PRESENT FOR GOD   …They took him up to Jerusalem to present the child Jesus to the Lord. – Luke 2:22   My wife, Thelma, and I believe that parenting’s goal is to give up our children in the end after having prepared them properly for life. And we consider our mission as done when we accompany them to the altar and give them away to their future spouse on their wedding day. Come to think of it, maybe we can also look at this giving away of a child in marriage  as the parents’ presentation of their child to the Lord and saying: “Here he/she is now, dear God. We have done our part to prepare him/her for life. Our mission is done. Take him/her with you as he/she leads a new life with his/her spouse.” We will soon give up another child in marriage. This lesson on giving her up as a present to God on her wedding day makes the letting go lighter and easier for us. Danny G. On our own, it is impossible to be a disciple of Jesus. We are encouraged and protected when we share our lives with others — both the good and bad aspects. This sort of openness is essential in overcoming sin in our lives as the battle against sin is half-won when we honestly confess it.   1 John 2:3-11 3 Beloved: The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: 6 whoever claims to abide in him ought to live [just] as he lived. 7 Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. (R) 5 The LORD made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty go before him; praise and grandeur are in his sanctuary. (R)   G O S P E L   The Nunc Dimitus, the Prayer of Simeon, are his parting words to the world and a great comfort on which to reflect. They are the words of a man who trusted in the Lord throughout his life. He believed in the coming Messiah and wanted to witness His advent. God blessed him with seeing the child Jesus, and thus Simeon’s desire was fulfilled. Simeon is now happy to leave this world for the next.   Luke 2:22-35 22 When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23 just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” 24 and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. 27 He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, 28 he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: 29 “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” 33 The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted 35 (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”   my reflections t h in k : Openness is essential in overcoming sin in our lives; the battle is half-won when we honestly confess it.   God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________   _______________________________________________________   READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR  Zechariah 9-11     Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top SABBATH   THE MARTYRDOM OF ST. THOMAS BECKET   Today is the memorial of St. Thomas Becket, a 12th-century English bishop and martyr. How fitting for this occasion are Simeon’s words to Mary (a prophecy, in fact) from today’s Gospel. Foretelling the thousands and thousands of Christians who across the centuries will eventually choose to risk their lives in “make-or-break” circumstances for the Lord (indeed to the point of martyrdom or death), the old prophet declared, “This child is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed . . . so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare.” Thomas Becket was one of such martyrs. His thoughts of self-sacrifice and fidelity to Christ were “laid bare” by the knights who accused him of treason, in the backdrop of the struggle between Church and State. And also, in a way Thomas was like Simeon who, after having encountered the Lord Jesus in his life, could confidently meet death boldly (“Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace...”). St. John (in the First Reading) states, “The way we can be sure we are in union with [God] is if one who claims to abide in him conducts himself just as he did.” If that is indeed the case, then we can be sure that Thomas Becket abided in the Lord simply because he conducted himself just as God did — that is to say, he lived and died in the manner of Jesus Christ. Elsewhere in the Gospel our Lord warned His disciples, “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first... If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you” (John 15: 18, 20). The martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket is a timely reminder of the futility of alliances for the sake of worldly power, and of the powerlessness from which genuine power ensues.Fr. I answered back thinking she was someone I knew. After a few minutes of conversation where I naively dropped some facts, she explained why she was in the Philippines and asked to be excused that her voice was different because she had some problems with her throat. She then asked me if I could give her a cell phone load as she couldn’t go out of the house and her maid was out. I didn’t understand why it was difficult because I knew my friend’s house was near everything. I wasn’t sure where to buy load myself so I told her I’d just pass on some to her. After I did, we planned to meet each other the next day. I waited for her at our meeting place. She never showed up. It was only later that I realized I had been duped by a stranger who claimed to be my friend. I was pretty naïve, I agree. But it makes me realize now that we humans have played my so-called “friend” in our relationship with God. We say we are His friends but many times, we actually act like His enemies by betraying Him through our actions. So are you really His true friend? In order to fully understand them, we need to allow the Spirit of God to permeate our hearts and minds so that we will be open to a deeper meaning of the words. But it is also worth shifting the focus to another death — more precisely, another kind of death. British poet T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) is the one who speaks of this: a kind of death, in fact, on the part of the Magi. In his poem, “Journey of the Magi,” we read: “Were we all led that way for / Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly, / We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, / But had thought they were different; this Birth was / Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death. / We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, / But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, / With an alien people clutching their gods. / I should be glad of another death.” Jesus’ birth at the stable in Bethlehem was that different kind of birth — one that fuses with or “crosses over” unto death (“this Birth was / Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.”) The entire “Christ-Event” upsets our whole outlook on birth and death, our entire worldview on life, in fact. This exactly is what Christ eventually preached in His lifetime: “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit,” culminating, of course, in his own death on Calvary. This was the death that gave rise to eternal life. That is now the other kind of death that we “should be glad of,” the other kind of death that the Holy Innocents enjoyed, the death that gives way to heavenly bliss and eternal joy. It was surely a gruesome death; but we see now that it was also a glorious death. We, therefore, are no longer at ease in our own earthly kingdoms, with all our worldly values and alien gods. “We should be glad of another death.” Thanks to the Holy Innocents for leading the way for us, and for helping us realize this more deeply.Fr. Daily Bible Reflections for December 27, 2010 Dear Lordie, Conquer this new week with God's Word in your heart! Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 27 December Monday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE   Feast of St. John, Apostle   PANIC OR BELIEVE?   He saw and believed. – John 20:8   How time flies. That’s a cliché, I know, but it’s true. For many of us, we wake up one day and we feel startled to realize it’s already a “ber” month. Then today comes and it’s already the last Sunday of 2010. December seems to have come and gone with work, shopping, parties and reunions. Now we’re faced with a new year. Imagine, one decade of the 21st century is almost over. As a new year comes, we can see it as an unknown that’s scary because we will have to face it alone. After all, there are all sorts of things to be scared of: the unstable economy, health issues, chaotic politics, etc. That’s one way of looking at it. Or we can look at the new year as a new gift and a blessing from the Lord that He hands over to us. As He does so, He assures us that He knows what will come and has already won over the challenges of the future, and that He will be with us every single day of 2011. Today’s Gospel reminds us of what separates a believer from a non-believer. The non-believer sees and he panics. We see — and we believe. What do you choose? (R)   G O S P E L   Peter’s leadership role among the apostles shows us that it is not necessarily learning and understanding that make a good leader; God looks to other qualities as well when developing leaders. We need to be aware of this as we disciple and form the leaders of tomorrow in the Church.   John 20:1a, 2-8 1 On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene 2 ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.   my reflections t h i n k : In order to fully understand the Word of God, we need to allow the Spirit of God to permeate our hearts and minds.   God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________   _______________________________________________________   READ THE BIBLE IN ONE Zechariah 1-4           Zechariah 1-4 Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top SABBATH   THE GREATNESS OF ST. JOHN   Joining us as we gather around the belen today is no other than St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. Most appropriately, of course, both our readings today come from his pen. The first, the beginning of his first letter, is an impressive sharing from the man. It is as if St. John is assuring us very dearly that what he is proclaiming to us is definitely neither invention nor imagination. “This is what we proclaim to you: ...what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and our hands have touched...” And he very clearly states his purpose in his writing: “that our joy may be complete.” It’s simply an echo of what our Lord Himself stated: “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete” (John 15:11). It is understandable, for indeed, which disciple (in the case of St. John, “the Beloved Disciple”) would ever contradict his Master? Wouldn’t he simply echo his Master’s original message? Similarly in our Gospel passage today, we find again St. John’s humble deferment to someone higher, his self-sacrificing and humble disposition vis-à-vis seniority. He outran Peter in the rush to the tomb where Jesus was buried, but he let the more superior leader of the Twelve enter the tomb first. Such is the greatness of the saint we are honoring today, St. John the Apostle and the Evangelist. He has made our joy complete, and he is a reliable witness who “saw and believed.” Fr.
