| THE TEMPEST “This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.” – Mark 12:7 Today’s Gospel reminds me of The Tempest, one of William Shakespeare’s plays. Like the parable narrated by Jesus, the play is about masters and servants and betrayal. In the parable, the servants betray their master. In The Tempest, the master, Prospero, the Duke of Milan, is betrayed by his brother Antonio, who grabs Prospero’s dukedom. Stripped of power, Prospero escapes with his three-year-old daughter Miranda and they settle on a strange island where Miranda grows up to be a beautiful woman. The play opens with the entourage of King Alonso of Naples, an ally of Antonio, being caught in a violent storm — a tempest — at sea. They are washed ashore on Prospero’s island. Actually, Prospero, a magician, conjured up the storm to begin his revenge against his brother. Throughout, we see Prospero as a bitter man unleashing his anger over his misfortune by making slaves of those he finds on the island. The play, however, ends with reconciliation and Prospero regaining his dukedom. The Tempest and today’s parable may be fiction. But their message of repentance and forgiveness is as true as Jesus, our Savior. Cynthia Santiago (cusantiago@gmail.com) 4 REFLECTION: Master or slave, we can betray each other. But once we repent, we will be forgiven. Lord, let me not betray You even amid the tempests of my life. Sts. Charles Lwanga and Companions, martyrs, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Peter is under no illusion that the grace of holiness is one that requires us to work hard to complement and so complete it. He tells us that we will have to do our utmost to grow in self-control, goodness, understanding and many other virtuous qualities. Let us remember the price Jesus paid for our salvation; it will keep in proper perspective the hard work we also have to contribute to grow in holiness. 2 Peter 1:2-7 2 Beloved: May grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power. 4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, 6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, 7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. P S A L M Psalm 91:1-2, 14-15, 15-16 R: In you, my God, I place my trust. 1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, 2 Say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (R) 14 Because he clings to me, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress. (R) I will deliver him and glorify him; 16 with length of days I will gratify him and will show him my salvation. (R) GOSPEL The protagonists in this parable are first and foremost the Jews who have failed to recognize the Messiah as He appears in their midst as Jesus. Secondly, it speaks to us who are just as bad for failing to live by the grace and blessing of salvation that we received in the Sacrament of Baptism. We should look at our own level of faithfulness to God before passing judgment on others. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Jesus Christ, you are the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead; you have loved us and freed us from our sins by your blood. Mark 12:1-12 1 Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey. 2 At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent them another servant. And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully. 5 He sent yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed. 6 He had one other to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last of all, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture Passage: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes’?” 12 They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them. So they left him and went away. think: We should look at our own level of faithfulness to God before passing judgment on others. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Samuel 17-20 G | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | A CALL TO BE FAITHFUL TENANTS The Philippines is supposed to be a Catholic and Christian country yet we are perceived to be one of most corrupt countries in Asia and the world. Can we have two masters? We can be distraught by the situation or respond with integrity and trust in God’s promise of deliverance. Corruption. Peter talks of “corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.” The psalmist sings of the person in distress. Mark recounts a parable of rejection of the servants sent to the vineyard by being persecuted and killed. What do we see? Corruption, distress and rejection can separate us from God. Corruption can rupture, crack or lead us away from God. Distress can cause us to be consumed by worries of the world. And then the Gospel of Mark observes: “But they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them. So they left him and went away.” Trust. Peter speaks of grace — divine power being bestowed upon us who are in a corrupt situation. The psalmist sings of a God we can trust who will deliver us from distress, who will answer our call. And the Gospel of Mark recalls the paradox of life that “the stone rejected has become the cornerstone.” We see a God we can depend on: His promise of redemption. Responsibility. God bestows us grace and divine power in times of corruption. God saves us and becomes our refuge and fortress. Jesus comes to redeem us. How do we respond to a God who reaches out to us? Do we corrupt, do we doubt, do we reject? Peter speaks of faith with virtue: self-control, endurance, devotion, mutual affection and love. The psalmist enjoins us to call upon His name, cling to Him. Mark reminds us about the vineyard of the Lord: we are the tenants and there is a time of reckoning or accountability. Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J REFLECTION QUESTION: What are your sources of corruption, distress and fears? Lord, in times of corruption, distress and rejection, You promise to be with us to deliver us. You promise redemption in Jesus, who was the stone rejected but became the cornerstone. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
